Norma is by common consent the finest of the ten operas composed during Vincenzo Bellini's short career, representing his genius more comprehensively than is usually the case with any single work by ...an operatic composer. This 1998 handbook provides the biographical and cultural context of the opera. It gives a full synopsis and an examination of the music and poetry, which is rooted in the aesthetics of early nineteenth-century Italian opera. Professor Kimbell suggests something of the impression Norma has made on our imaginations and sensibilities in the 165 years since it was first produced in Milan in December 1831. He considers the great interpretations of the eponymous leading role. His discussion also embraces Bellini's work more generally by presenting some of the critical reactions to his music.
The article reflects on the series 'Prayers' by Brazilian visual artist Roberto Bellini (1979), born in the city of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. It articulates a dialogue between the artist's production and ...the concept of Nachleben, or post-life of the images from German art historian Aby Warburg. In his work Bellini identifies the permanence offorms and the performatic and ritualistic character of art. In dialogue with ancestral images, the artist recognizes them in history, identifies their strength and establishes formal connections that resonate with a deep subjectivity. Keywords: Roberto Bellini/ nachleben / Aby Warburg. •Collecting ducts carcinoma (CDC) is a rare and aggressive disease.•Incurable when metastatic, chemotherapy has palliative role with poor responses.•Case reports with targeted therapy and encouraging ...results, scarce strong evidences.•Molecular characterize CDC to find recurrent alterations and potential targets.•New biological driven approaches, immune-checkpoint inhibitors are feasible.
Collecting ducts carcinoma (CDC) is a rare and aggressive histological subtype of renal cancer accounting for only 1% of renal tumors. Usually patients present in bad clinical conditions due to a symptomatic disease with synchronous metastasis. Due to the rarity of CDC, data from prospective trials evaluating the best treatment for these patients are limited. The prognosis is poor with a median overall survival of around 11 months for patients with metastatic disease. The best treatment option today is considered a doublet chemotherapy with platinum salt plus gemcitabine as a result from a prospective phase II trial, but survival outcomes remain unsatisfactory.
The interest in the in-depth understanding the biology of this orphan disease is growing, leading to find potential new biological-driven treatment approaches. Here we review the up-to-date literature evidences to address the best management of this rare and unfavorable clinical condition.

The precise mechanisms of kidney stone formation and growth are not completely known, even though human stone disease appears to be one of the oldest diseases known to medicine. With the advent of ...the new digital endoscope and detailed renal physiological studies performed on well phenotyped stone formers, substantial advances have been made in our knowledge of the pathogenesis of the most common type of stone former, the idiopathic calcium oxalate stone former as well as nine other stone forming groups. The observations from our group on human stone formers and those of others on model systems have suggested four entirely different pathways for kidney stone formation. Calcium oxalate stone growth over sites of Randall’s plaque appear to be the primary mode of stone formation for those patients with hypercalciuria. Overgrowths off the ends of Bellini duct plugs have been noted in most stone phenotypes, do they result in a clinical stone? Micro-lith formation does occur within the lumens of dilated inner medullary collecting ducts of cystinuric stone formers and appear to be confined to this space. Lastly, cystinuric stone formers also have numerous small, oval, smooth yellow appearing calyceal stones suggestive of formation in free solution. The scientific basis for each of these four modes of stone formation are reviewed and used to explore novel research opportunities.

The fields of performance studies, empirical musicology, and the musicology of recordings have seen a tremendous development in recent years, shedding new light on the recent history of our ...performing tradition and conveying essential information to music practitioners, critics and audiences. This innovative work considers the notion of bel canto and the manner in which this vibrant tradition lives in the records of Luisa Tetrazzini (1871-1940), one of the most celebrated sopranos ever. Tetrazzini, whose discographic career includes about 120 recordings, belongs to that generation of inspirational performers who heralded the dawn of a new era of music appreciation, alongside such iconic figures as Enrico Caruso, Adelina Patti and Nellie Melba. Drawing on a vast body of scholarship and a number of contemporary reviews, Massimo Zicari establishes Tetrazzini’s role in the Italian operatic tradition and its much disputed set of performing conventions. His transcriptions of her recorded interpretations from Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi will prove invaluable to singers and conductors interested in a tradition that goes back to legendary figures such as Jenny Lind and Maria Malibran. The author also discusses her voice quality and technique, tempo flexibility, her use of vibrato and portamento—features of musical performance that question several widely-held, normative views about aesthetics and interpretative tradition. The volume includes eighty-eight musical examples and its closing section consists of the vocal scores of thirteen operatic arias. The musical material (both examples and transcriptions) is entirely original. This unique approach seeks to combine an academic perspective with the making of the music, in the hope that the plea for originality may be enhanced by models from the past.
