Some twenty years after the end of World War II, Pope Paul VI declared St. Benedict as the patron saint of Europe. The immediate reason was the restoration of the Benedictine motherhouse, the monastery on Monte Cassino, which was completely destroyed in the war devastation of the Second World War. After the introductory thoughts, in which the author points to the immediate context of the apostolic letter Pacis Nuntius, by which Pope Paul VI proclaimed St. Benedict the patron of Europe, the author summarizes the content of the Letter. In the third part of the article, the author talks about the wider historical context in which the apostolic letter Pacis Nuntius was created, that is, about the processes of disintegration that led to the Second World War. In the last part of the article, the author talks about the possible current issues of the apostolic letter Pacis Nuntius, that is, he concludes that no economic bonds are and will not be adequate and sufficient for the European community of peoples. True unity is possible only on Christian foundations, because Christianity has inspired and built Europe throughout the centuries and shaped the history of all European nations.

The claim that evolution undermines Christianity is standard fare in our culture. Indeed, many today have the impression that the two are mutually exclusive and that a choice must be made between ...faith and reason—rejecting Christianity on the one hand or evolutionary theory on the other. Is there a way to square advances in this field of study with the Bible and Church teaching? In this book—his fourth dedicated to applying Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s wisdom to pressing theological difficulties—Matthew Ramage answers this question decidedly in the affirmative. Distinguishing between evolutionary theory properly speaking and the materialist attitude that is often conflated with it, Ramage’s work meets the challenge of evolutionary science to Catholic teaching on human origins, guided by Ratzinger’s conviction that faith and evolutionary theory mutually enrich one another. Pope Benedict gifted the Church with many pivotal yet often-overlooked resources for engaging evolution in the light of faith, especially in those instances where he addressed the topic in connection with the Book of Genesis. Ramage highlights these contributions and also makes his own by applying Ratzinger’s principles to such issues as the meaning of man’s special creation, the relationship between sin and death, and the implications of evolution for eschatology. Notably, Ramage shows that many apparent conflicts between Christianity and evolutionary theory lose their force when we interpret creation in light of the Paschal Mystery and fix our gaze on Jesus, the New Adam who reveals man to himself. Readers of this text will find that it does more than merely help to resolve apparent contradictions between faith and modern science. Ramage’s work shows that discoveries in evolutionary biology are not merely difficulties to be overcome but indeed gifts that yield precious insight into the mystery of God’s saving plan in Christ.
Sve glasniji pritisak laičkih feminističkih krugova izvan Crkve, ali i unutar nje, traži ...afirmaciju žena u svećeničkom staležu, shodno dostojanstvu svakog čovjeka i nasuprot bilo kakvoj diskriminaciji.
After the Second Vatican Council, the issue of allowing women to become priests is becoming more and more actual in the Church. The increasingly loud pressure of lay feminist circles outside the Church, but also within it, demands the affirmation of women in the priestly ordinance, in accordance with the dignity of every human being and against any discrimination. The popes of the third millennium have to provide an adequate response to such demands. In their statements and speeches, the very significant role and undeniable dignity of women in the Church is recognized. Speaking very clearly on this topic in several places, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis advocate the equal dignity and rights of every human being, man and woman, which is based on man’s natural sacramentality. In this direction, this paper will try to present in three steps the views of the three popes of the third millennium, what are the similarities and peculiarities in their reflections related to the ordination of women and their human dignity.
Monastic life does not possess a purpose of its own. It is not determined by work in its own field of activity but by prayer and a more consistent search for God. For St. Benedict, the author of the well-known monastic Regula, the privileged place of searching for God is a community of brothers. St Benedict's Rule requires from those wishing to seek God in a monastic community a triple zeal: a zeal for the Work of God, for obedience and for serving. Although the holy God seeker Benedict emphasizes that the Work of God, as he calls the prayer of the Divine Office, is the first indicator of a true search for God, he wants to permeate and link everything with liturgical prayer; not only other prayers but also obedience and different ways of serving. The Rule stresses that God's will is sought in prayer, and obediently done in various kinds of serving present in communal living. In the first part of the article, based on St. Benedict's teaching and commentaries of the prominent experts on his Rule, a monastic community is described as a "School of the Lord's Service”, in which one learns from Christ how to seek God and do his will. In the second part, a true search for God is presented and the triple zeal that God seekers have to possess is explained.
This book offers a unique overview on the career and work on Benedict XII, the third pope of Avignon. Benedict XII (ca. 1334-1342) was a key figure of the Avignon papal court, renowned for rooting ...out heretics and distinguishing himself as a refined theologian. During his reign, he faced the most significant religious and political challenges in the era of the Avignon papacy: theological quarrels, divisions and schisms within the Church, conflicts between European sovereigns, and the growth of Turkish power in the East. In spite of its diminished political influence, the papacy, which had recently moved to France, emerged as an institution committed to the defense and expansion of the Catholic faith in Europe and the East. Benedict made significant contributions to the definition of doctrine, the assessment of pontifical power in Western Europe, and the expansion of Catholicism in the East: in all these different contexts he distinguished himself as a true guardian of orthodoxy.

Michael Benedikt (1935–2007), who has been occasionally grouped with the New York School poets, as well as James Tate and Russell Edson, published five books of poetry in his lifetime, and edited ...several anthologies, including the influential The Prose Poem (1976) and The Poetry of Surrealism (1974). This collection brings together for the first time work from all five of those long out-of-print volumes—along with work from his five unpublished manuscripts, which were nearly destroyed after his death. Finally, this once widely published and influential voice is back in print, and a fuller understanding of the development of American surrealism and the prose poem in the 1960s and 1970s is possible. Also, the more expansive work that he began in 1980, which investigated the line between the lyric and prose narrative, is finally getting the book presentation it deserves. A lifelong New Yorker, Benedikt was at various times an associate editor with Art News and Art International, managing editor of Locus Solus, and poetry editor of the Paris Review. Benedikt also taught at institutions such as Sarah Lawrence, Bennington, Vassar, and Boston University.
