Paul Bowles's literary productions, both factual and fictional, were significantly influenced by Moroccan culture, where he resided for over half a century. Despite facing harsh criticism, ...particularly as postcolonial critique gained prominence in literary circles, Bowles gave life to a collection of stories and life histories from a distinctly Moroccan perspective. Issues of (mis)representation, Orientalism, authority, and authorship of translated works were central to the controversy. This paper delves into the portrayal of self and other within Bowles's translation of life stories and fiction by his Moroccan collaborators, Choukri, Layachi, and Mrabet. Their narratives are examined in the context of Tangier's multicultural environment, where sexual, socio-cultural, ethnic, and religious identities are perpetually questioned and negotiated. The paper argues that through collaborative translation, Bowles allowed marginalised voices from the underground of Moroccan society to emerge, subverting stereotypical images perpetuated by colonial hegemony and elitist nationalist discourses. By investigating issues pertaining to (mis)representation, Orientalism, authority, and authorship within these translated works, the study sheds light on the power dynamics and complexities inherent in cross-cultural literary encounters.
This essay considers Patricia Highsmith’s 1969 North African novel, The Tremor of Forgery , as the story of the spiritual trial of the novel’s protagonist, Howard Ingham. The novel conventionally has ...been read as the story of Ingham’s ethical failure and existential malaise following a series of personal and professional life traumas. With reference to the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, which exerted a profound influence upon Highsmith, this essay argues, rather, that Ingham is rightly interpreted as a knight of faith who responds to his life traumas with an invigorated sense of existential possibility and a newfound appreciation of spiritual ideals.
Remembered Music Alfieri, Gabe C.
The Tennessee Williams annual review,

Alfieri asserts that Tennessee Williams was meticulous about the aural aspects of his plays, from the poetry of his words to sound effects and music. Both working drafts and published versions reveal ...careful musical indications, often naming specific tunes or describing details of sound or musical style, and the playwright frequently requested (and got) top-notch musicians for his premieres. Even in an age when original music for plays was more the rule than the exception, the musicologist May Burton could write in 1956 that the playwright who most consistently requests music for his plays is Tennessee Williams. This essay attempts to retrieve the lost soundscape of the original Sweet Bird from archival records that suggest ( pace Murphy) that music, and sound more generally, did in fact play a significant role in the development of the play and its first Broadway production. Though Bowles's score and the production recordings made of it are now evidently lost, some revealing aspects of the original music for Sweet Bird can be recovered from surviving documents.
This work underscores the true brilliance and timelessness of colonial metaphors of authorship that extend into the postmodern Age. The emphasis is upon both re-invention and comprehensive ...scholarship on music and film.

No one had checked anyone for weapons, and we were thousands gathered in an enclosed space.) Many of the speakers throughout the night addressed the chaotic mood of the cultural and political moment; ...that same day saw massive protests at JFK airport against Executive Order 13769, otherwise known as the Muslim travel ban. In some respects, the expressions of the fantastical and the surreal that were being shaped a little over seventy years ago have now become commonplace, devoured and metabolized by our popular culture. Few people will bat an eye at the soft surrealism of a GEICO ad between YouTube videos, any number of scripted series adopting a panoply of absurdist styles, or the internet, our glorious collective font of anarchic creative energy harnessed (sometimes) in memes, tweets, loosely organized aesthetic movements, unruly eruptions of the weird.
