This volume examines a number of different book lists from a variety of European countries during the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It offers a wide-ranging re-evaluation of one of ...the most interesting and underused resources for early modern book history.
The authors evaluate the symbolic value of the 91 rules published in 1841, as incipit of the first volume of the Catalogue of printed books of the British Museum, declaring its founding basis, and ...legitimizing the growing reputation of Antonio Panizzi at the same time. Monument of the elites and Trustees of the British Museum Library, the 91 were preceded by 73 rules, printed and distributed only among the cataloguers of the library in March 1839. The essay explains the existence of a normative stratification and evolution of the rules (oral tradition, limited circulation, revision and wider diffusion) and therefore the need for an archeology of knowledge's approach. The novelties of the first cataloging code reside in the passage from an empirical to a conscious approach to the functions of the catalogue, while the printing of the catalogue is considered by Panizzi an antieconomical manifestation. The catalogue had not yet found its expressive paradigm, consolidated only today in the format of an open digital work, constantly updated. KEYWORDS Cataloguing; Antonio Panizzi; 91 Cataloguing Rules; British Museum.
Plants are a relatively well curated and maintained taxonomic group. Despite all this taxonomic effort, it is not always clear for users of plant species information which authoritative taxonomic ...list to follow. Collaborations, such as between the World Flora Online consortium, International Plant Names Index (IPNI), Australian Plant Names Index (APNI), Catalogue of Life (COL), the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), and others may help the plant community move forward towards an encompassing global plant species resource. Over the past 20 years, COL has strived to assemble a global plant species list from various data sources published in the COL Checklist (Bánki et al. 2022). COL aspires to move towards having more plant taxonomic sectors being managed by active taxonomic communities. Through its new infrastructure, ChecklistBank, Catalogue of Life is on its way to provide additional services to publish, discover, compare and download different plant taxonomic data sources. COL is also working with partners such as PlaZi, Pensoft and Biodiversity Heritage Library to link plant species information with available digital literature. Such services could help users of plant information to better understand the overlap and differences between the various plant species data sources offered.
Land snail surveys conducted in northern Laos between 2013 and 2014 have led to the discovery of a living population of Trichelix horrida (Pfeiffer, 1863). This species has never been recorded from ...specimens other than the types, and its distribution and anatomy have remained essentially unknown. The genitalia and radula morphology are documented here for the first time and employed to re-assess the systematic position of this species: the unique morphological characters of T. horrida are a penis similar in length to the vagina, a small and triangular penial verge, gametolytic organs extending as far as the albumen gland, head wart present, and unicuspid triangular radula teeth. The type locality of this species was believed to be from "Lao Mountains, Camboja," and is restricted herein to be Luang Phrabang Province, northern Laos. The assignment of species to either of three genera, Trichelix Ancey, 1887, Moellendorffia Ancey, 1887, and Moellendorffiella Pilsbry, 1905, based solely on information provided in their original descriptions is difficult. The type specimens of all nominal species presently placed in either of these three genera are examined and illustrated herein. Comparison with the primary type specimens will assist future revisions aiming to resolve the systematics of these taxa. In addition, we transfer Moellendorffia faberiana (Möllendorff, 1888) to the genus Moellendorffiella. Keywords: Biodiversity, Indochina, Japan, land snail, limestone, systematics, type specimen
