Critical Technocultural Discourse Analysis (CTDA) is a multimodal analytic technique for the investigation of Internet and digital phenomena, artifacts, and culture. It integrates an analysis of the ...technological artifact and user discourse, framed by cultural theory, to unpack semiotic and material connections between form, function, belief, and meaning of information and communication technologies (ICTs). CTDA requires the incorporation of critical theory—critical race, feminism, queer theory, and so on—to incorporate the epistemological standpoint of underserved ICT users so as to avoid deficit-based models of underrepresented populations’ technology use. This article describes in detail the formulation and execution of the technique, using the author’s research on Black Twitter as an exemplar. Utilizing CTDA, the author found that Black discursive identity interpellated Twitter’s mechanics to produce explicit cultural technocultural digital practices—defined by one investor as “the use case for Twitter.” Researchers interested in using this technique will find it an intervention into normative and analytic technology analyses, as CTDA formulates technology as cultural representations and social structures in order to simultaneously interrogate culture and technology as intertwined concepts.

Urban sprawl is omnipresent in America and has left many citizens questioning their ability to stop it. InDistant Publics,Jenny Rice examines patterns of public discourse that have evolved in ...response to development in urban and suburban environments. Centering her study on Austin, Texas, Rice finds a city that has simultaneously celebrated and despised development.Rice outlines three distinct ways that the rhetoric of publics counteracts development: through injury claims, memory claims, and equivalence claims. In injury claims, rhetors frame themselves as victims in a dispute. Memory claims allow rhetors to anchor themselves to an older, deliberative space, rather than to a newly evolving one. Equivalence claims see the benefits on both sides of an issue, and here rhetors effectively become nonactors.Rice provides case studies of development disputes that place the reader in the middle of real-life controversies and evidence her theories of claims-based public rhetorics. She finds that these methods comprise the most common (though not exclusive) vernacular surrounding development and shows how each is often counterproductive to its own goals. Rice further demonstrates that these claims create a particular role or public subjectivity grounded in one's own feelings, which serves to distance publics from each other and the issues at hand.Rice argues that rhetoricians have a duty to transform current patterns of public development discourse so that all individuals may engage in matters of crisis. She articulates its sustainability as both a goal and future disciplinary challenge of rhetorical studies and offers tools and methodologies toward that end.

Despite this, the digital revolution has not penetrated the core activity of literary studies: interpretive analysis of written texts._x000B__x000B_Computers can handle vast amounts of data, allowing for the comparison of texts in ways that were previously too overwhelming for individuals, but they may also assist in enhancing the entirely necessary role of subjectivity in critical interpretation. Reading Machines discusses the importance of this new form of text analysis conducted with the assistance of computers. Ramsay suggests that the rigidity of computation can be enlisted by intuition, subjectivity, and play.
Cet article présente le projet E-MIMIC, une application qui vise à éliminer les préjugés et la non-inclusion dans les textes administratifs rédigés dans les pays européens, à commencer par ceux qui ...sont rédigés dans les langues romanes. Il présente une méthodologie conçue à partir de critères discursifs inspirés de l’analyse du discours française et utilisés pour étiqueter un corpus de documents institutionnels, qui sont utilisés pour l’apprentissage profond des réseaux neuronaux. Des architectures de modélisation profonde du langage sont exploitées pour identifier automatiquement les extraits de texte non inclusifs, suggérer des formes alternatives et produire des reformulations inclusives. Une évaluation préliminaire menée sur un ensemble de données de référence pour la langue italienne montre des résultats prometteurs, qui poussent à finaliser l’application et à la réaliser également pour d’autres langues, tel le français.
Discourse Analysis and Artificial Intelligence to empower inclusive writing: the project E-MIMIC.
This paper presents the EMIMIC project, an application that aims to eliminate non-inclusive, prejudiced language forms in administrative texts written in European countries, starting with those written in Romance languages. It presents a methodology based on discourse criteria inspired by French discourse analysis and used to label a corpus of institutional documents, which are used for the deep learning of neural networks. Deep Language Modelling architectures are exploited to automatically identify non-inclusive text snippets, suggest alternative forms, and produce inclusive text rephrasing. A preliminary evaluation conducted on a benchmark dataset in Italian shows promising results and encourages us to finalise the application and to implement it also for other languages, such as French.
