Students’ personal, emotional, and psychological traits are perceived to be highly influential in their academic engagement; therefore, many investigations have been conducted into the role of ...students’ characteristics in their level of engagement. Yet, the role of L2 enjoyment and academic motivation as two instances of students’ emotional traits was disregarded. To narrow this gap, this article aimed to assess the effects of these two constructs on Chinese EFL students’ academic engagement. To accomplish this, three pre-designed scales were virtually administered to 490 Chinese students. Using the Spearman Rho test, significant correlations were discovered among the variables. Further, through regression analysis, the predictive power of dependent variables was also assessed. Chinese students’ academic engagement was proved to be favorably predicted by L2 enjoyment and academic motivation. The implications and limitations are finally discussed.
The widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language education contexts has motivated several scholars around the world to uncover the advantages and disadvantages of AI and AI-powered ...instruments in different language classrooms. Yet, as the review of earlier investigations revealed, few inquiries have been carried out to divulge the pros and cons of leveraging AI in EFL classes. To narrow this gap, using the phenomenological approach, this inquiry investigated the opportunities and challenges of implementing AI in EFL classes from the perspective of Chinese EFL students. To do so, through the criterion sampling technique, a total of 45 EFL students was recruited from different educational institutions in China. To collect the dataset, participants were asked to complete an open-ended questionnaire. For the sake of triangulation, among the 45 participants, 15 were randomly selected to engage in a follow-up interview session. With the aid of MAXQDA software (version 2023), participants’ perceptions of AI opportunities and challenges were carefully analyzed. Overall, the analysis findings uncovered that leveraging AI in EFL classes can bring numerous opportunities for EFL students, including individualized learning, timely and immediate feedback, rich educational resources, and an interactive learning atmosphere. However, as demonstrated by the analysis outcomes, implementing AI in EFL courses may also face students with a range of challenges and problems. The research outcomes would be of great help to teachers and educational leaders in mitigating the challenges of leveraging AI in language classrooms.

It is by now well established that materials may have an impact beyond simply learning a language they present. Hence, in this study attempts have been made to investigate the strengths and ...weaknesses of a textbook Summit 2B which is currently being widely used in Iranian EFL classes. The textbook has been evaluated based on criteria provided by McDonough and Shaw (1993) on the basis of two stages: an external and an internal evaluation. Efforts have been made to critically evaluate the textbook in terms of the layout, grading and sequencing of assignments, design, content, different activities, sort of texts utilized, and the skills emphasized in the book. The findings showed that albeit there appears to be some shortcomings, Summit 2B seems to be more efficient to meet the requirements of EFL learners as compared with the other textbooks which have hitherto been used at different language classes. Accordingly, investigating and evaluating the book proved to be very lucrative and valuable in terms of pedagogy as well as the efficient attributes that suits the context of the present study. Finally, the implications as regards the efficiency of this particular course book as the consequence of evaluating it have been put forward and the strengths and weaknesses related to it have been argued.
