The debate on the semantic analysis of both lexical and grammatical forms has been salient since the early days of the institutionalisation of semiotics, as fundamental to the theoretical and ...methodological curriculum of this disciplinary domain. In this debate, the concept of content-figurae, or semantic traits, plays a major role. The well-established sources for this concept and the corresponding method of analysis are the works of Hjelmslev and Jakobson, mediated through Umberto Eco's thinking. In Eco's framework, the idea of content-figurae is interpreted as that of 'semantic primitives, and on that ground, its epistemological foundation and methodological efficacy are refuted. In this article, I try to relate Eco's semiotic position to Hjelmslev's and Jakobsons's positions in linguistic (grammatical) semantics, discussing their principles of semantic analysis of grammatical forms from the perspective of the institutionalisation of semiotics as a disciplinary domain.
Although classified as a literary novel with a fictional plot, The Prague cemetery is crammed with historical information on 19th century Europe, with the focus on the rise of antiSemitism during ...this period. The overwhelming amount of data has been criticised as distracting from the plot and creating difficulty for the reader in making sense of the storyline. This article examines the role of the reader in deciphering the twisting of historic events and fiction in The Prague cemetery, that is, a literary text packed tight with historical data intertwined with a fictional story, loaded with signs, symbols and hidden meanings that have to be decoded. It is demonstrated, firstly, that a Model Reader with encyclopaedic knowledge will be able to decode the hidden meanings in the text; secondly, that the nonmodel, or empirical reader, who does not actualise all of the meaning- content, will not be hindered in his understanding of the story and thirdly, that the author's intentions will duly be accomplished.
The article presents an episode related to the erroneous attribution of the phrase carmina non dant panem to Nemesianus, a Carthaginian poet living in the 3rd century AD, who did not enjoy the due ...authority among researchers. Later, Nemesianus’ Eclogue IV, which – as a literary space – is an example of an original intertextual collage, was analysed. The analysis of the last Eclogue written by Carthaginian poet shows how he weaved this work out of the poetic tradition concerning the truth about the transience of youthful beauty. Both the Latin sentence carmina dant panem, quoted in Umberto Eco’s novel, and versus intercalaris, quoted ten times in the Nemesianus’ Eclogue, make us think about the most desirable value that is expected from poetry, both from the point of view of the author and the recipient. Eclogue IV reveals the author’s melancholy poetic reverie about the transience of the things of this world, and also shows that the poet does not listen to his predecessors to speak in the same way as them, but he listens to their voices in order to better hear and articulate his own separate voice, as it were a tribute to poetry, which is therapy for the creator.
The northern part of the department of Paraná, Brazil is a recently colonized region, with scarce literary production, particularly with respect to fiction. The article focuses on O trovador, by Rodrigo Garcia Lopes, which provides an overview of the period, specifically of the city of Londrina, on the basis of a Provencal poem. In the style of Umberto Eco, the author writes a historical-detective novel in which literature and history enter into an intense, erudite, and ironic dialogue. It provides a critical view of the English colonial spirit, in a manner that informs and entertains the reader, while authenticating its fictional discourse with elements of reality. The article addresses the work as a new type of historical novel and discusses the features that make it such (following guidelines suggested by Esteves, among other researchers), discusses the author’s knowledge regarding the “library”, according to Samoyault, and examines Londrina as a human and geographic category.
The contribution presents a reflection on the application of a semantic ontology in the didactic field aiming at promoting a critical awareness of the process of interpreting a cultural product that ...involves at least writing. First of all, the essay will take into consideration methodological approaches focusing the concept of ontology from the semantic (A. Greimas, R. Romano), philosophical (U. Eco) and anthropological (G. Bateson schismogenesis) points of view: then it will analyse two experiences in two college courses, in which has been successfully applied semantically oriented ontological analysis. Finally the essay will close with a reflection on the meaning that the proposal would have as regards some traits of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophical research.
Digitalisation and platformisation are continuously impacting and reshaping the societies we live in. In this context, we are witnessing the rise of phenomena such as fake news, hate speech, and the ...sharing of any other illegal content through social media. In this paper, I propose some ethical reflections on content moderation in the context of digital (social) media, as this topic seems – to me – to already incorporate other relevant digital issues in it, such as algorithms bias, the spread of fake news, and the potential misuses of artificial intelligence. In the first section, I will provide a few hermeneutic reflections over a speech given by the Italian scholar Umberto Eco, which appears to underline the necessity of a content moderation in an era of digital (social) media. In the second section, I will analyse, through a consequentialist perspective, critical and ethical issues posed by content moderation. In particular, I suggest the idea of a ‘moderate’ (reasonable and limited) content moderation that can only be assured by humans, as they are able to contextualise the content, to take emotions and subjective elements into account, to apply critical thinking and adaptability in complex circumstances.
