How did the individual human being become the focus of the contemporary
discourse on security? What was the role of the United Nations in
securing the individual? What are the payoffs and costs of ...this
extension of the concept? Neil MacFarlane and Yuen Foong Khong tackle these
questions by analyzing historical and contemporary debates about what is to be
secured. From Westphalia through the 19th century, the state's claim to be the
object of security was sustainable because it offered its subjects some measure of
protection. The state's ability to provide security for its citizens came under
heavy strain in the 20th century as a result of technological, strategic, and
ideological innovations. By the end of World War II, efforts to reclaim the security
rights of individuals gathered pace, as seen in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights and a host of United Nations covenants and conventions. MacFarlane and Khong
highlight the UN's work in promoting human security ideas since the 1940s, giving
special emphasis to its role in extending the notion of security to include
development, economic, environmental, and other issues in the 1990s.
The author argues that the theory of national economic security is on the rise again and the qualitatively new phase of its development will be characterized by an increase of scientific and applied ...interest to various aspects of this field.
This trend is consistent with the escalation of internal and external threats to socio-economic stability in major countries, the growing turbulence in the global economy, intensified global competition for natural resources and human capital and the emergence of new types of threats to national economic security, including environmental crises, uncontrolled migration and the coronavirus pandemic.
In the near future, the scientific community will face a number of important research tasks, including the need to shape an updated methodological base, verify acquired knowledge and outline new research priorities. These tasks will be difficult to complete without a set of comprehensive definitions in the field of national economic security.
The ongoing capsulation of scientific schools and their gravitation toward their own conceptual frameworks is a serious problem for the institutionalization and development of national economic security as an independent scientific discipline. This problem makes it impossible to create a common methodological framework for the discipline and undermines constructive scientific discussion between representatives of different scientific schools in this field.
The author attempts to streamline the conceptual apparatus to solve the aforementioned problem. The scholarship of several scientific schools and prominent experts is analyzed to identify and systematize the most important terms and their definitions within the field of national economic security. Based on the data obtained a number of comprehensive and coherent definitions is introduced.
The current stage of the evolution of national economic security is characterized by a weakening of neoliberal ideas and an increased impact of economic concepts within neorealism in the scientific community. These developments need to be reflected in the conceptual apparatus of this discipline. In this regard, the system of current basic definitions requires a significant update.

The circumstances in which domestic subjects of economic activity try to function and achieve the goals of their existence are determined. In the conditions of traditional and new threats, there is a ...need to research approaches to strategic security-oriented management, which is designed to ensure continuous functioning and profitable operation of business structures, regardless of the influence of external and internal environmental challenges on this process. The purpose of the study is to establish the characteristics and formative features of active and passive strategies for managing the economic security of economic entities, to establish their suitability for use in war conditions and during the post-war recovery of Ukraine's economy. The methods of historical analysis, content analysis, synthesis, generalization and graphic visualization were used in the research process. "Deep, informed, and reeks of common sense." -Norman
Ornstein "It is now beyond debate that rising
inequality is not only leaving millions of Americans living on a
sharp edge but also is threatening ...our democracy…For activists and
scholars alike who are struggling to create a more equitable
society, this is an essential read." -David Gergen We are
in an age of crisis. That much we can agree on. But a crisis of
what, exactly? And how do we get out of it? In a follow up to their
influential and much debated Death by a Thousand Cuts ,
Michael Graetz and Ian Shapiro focus on what really worries people:
not what the rich are making or the government is taking from them
but their own insecurity. Americans are worried about losing their
jobs, their status, and the safety of their communities. They fear
the wolf at the door. The solution is not protectionism or class
warfare but better jobs, higher wages, greater protection for
families suffering from unemployment, better health insurance, and
higher quality childcare. And it turns out those goals are more
achievable than you might think. The Wolf at the Door is
one of those rare books that doesn't just diagnose our problems, it
shows how to address them. "This is a terrific book, original,
erudite, and superbly well-informed, and full of new wisdom about
what might and what might not help the majority of Americans who
have not shared in our growing prosperity, but are left facing the
wolf at the door…Everyone interested in public policy should read
this book." -Angus Deaton, Princeton University "Graetz and Shapiro
wrestle with a fundamental question of our day: How do we address a
system that makes too many Americans anxious that economic security
is slipping out of reach? Their cogent call for sensible and
achievable policies…should be read by progressives and
conservatives alike." -Jacob J. Lew, former Secretary of the
Treasury
