This longitudinal study analyzed university students' cognition in learning an English for young learners (EYL) course. A qualitative method was used to get the data from 28 students who took the ...tiered EYL courses, EYL 1, EYL 2, and EYL 3, at a private university by giving them open-ended questionnaires for three semesters, or one and a half years. Semi-structured interviews with those 28 students were also used as the triangulation data at the end of each semester. The findings indicate a very extreme change in pre-service teachers' cognition, such as motivation, perception, and belief. At the end of their lecture, students initially interested in learning English for young learners did not want to become EYL teachers. On the other hand, students who enrolled in the EYL course for non-academic reasons wanted to have a profession as an EYL teacher after completing the EYL courses. It proves that students' interest in teaching English to young learners and the length of time spent studying EYL teaching knowledge do not assure those pre-service teachers are increasingly convinced to have a teaching profession.

English is an elective subject at Indonesian primary schools and every school is allowed to offer English for providing young learners (YLs) opportunity to practice English for communication in ...global society. Moreover, English is introduced earlier in primary education as an extra-curricular activity as well as a locally-tailored school subject. This community service program aims at facilitating the sixth graders with extended activities to support the English for Young Learners (EYL) program that they have attended for six years and preparing them with initial experience before enrolling in English a compulsory subject class in lower secondary education. Ar-Rohmah English Week was conducted for 60 minutes within four working days with activities to enhance the YLs’ English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Four activities were selected based on the learners’ needs within meaningful activities such as Virtual Tour to the USA, Reading Theater, Students’ Activities Journaling which infuses Islamic content, and Act Out and Presentation. All of those activities were also designed by addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (UN SDGs 2030) number 4 on quality education. With their English proficiency, all students are expected to be able to compete in mastering various knowledge in facing global challenges in the future.
English is taught in Swedish schools from the primary level, often from year 1. However, grades are normally not awarded until year 6, and the official information as to what English instruction in ...the early years should focus on in terms of content and learning objectives is quite limited, as are the guidelines regarding assessment. Against this background, we have interviewed a number of Swedish primary school teachers about the curriculum and other official documents regulating English education in Sweden, as well as their teaching and assessment practices, including the challenges they perceive and the strategies they employ to overcome them. Contact between the school and the students’ homes has been an additional, though related, focus. The participants confirmed that they experienced English instruction in primary school as not very well regulated, leaving them with some uncertainty as to how they should organize it and, in particular, how the students’ performance should be assessed. The fact that English is ubiquitous in most young Swedes’ lives was addressed as well. While the teachers did adopt different strategies to deal with the challenges they faced, they also expressed a need for enhanced guidance or cooperation.

This paper deals with the teaching of English pronunciation in the primary classroom. It starts from two major premises. First, the Lingua Franca status of English (ELF), which has prompted a shift ...in pronunciation teaching from the attainment of a native accent to the achievement of mutual intelligibility. Second, the features of today’s primary classroom, which is de facto an ELF context, the school population being characterised by a growing number of multilingual pupils and of non-native teachers of English. Three English coursebooks for the primary school are analysed to investigate: 1) if and which pronunciation-focussed activities are suggested; 2) if and what support is provided to the primary teacher to make the most of the activities; 3) whether any of such activities/support show a trend towards an early inclusion of ELF-aware pronunciation pedagogy.
