In Jacek Wojtysiak’s complex argument against the hiddenness argument of J.L. Schellenberg includes the premise of the existence of “nonresistant nonbelievers”. In this article, I present reasons why the classical theist should not accept this premise. Otherwise, he would have to assume that God is to blame for the existence of “nonresistant nonbelievers”. And this leads to the destructive conclusion for the theist that the Christian God is not a God of the omni-attributes.
The problem of the hiddenness of God is becoming an increasingly discussed philosophical topic. In my article, I would like to deal with the issue called by Jacek Wojtysiak (in his book Między jawnością a ukryciem Between Hiddenness and Openness) (Wojtysiak 2023) “testimonial knowledge” and connect it with Newman’s concept of implicit reasoning. Distinguishing between two types of reasoning — one spontaneous, practical, applicable to in the area of faith and morality, and the other: critical, analytical and retrospective, used in science, as well as in philosophy and theology — seems crucial to understanding the factual God’s hiddenness.
The essay is a translation of Immanuel Wallerstein's lecture, which he delivered in Vienna, March 2000, in the series „ Von der Notwendigkeit des Überflüssigen -Sozialwissenschaften und ...Gesellschaft". The original title of the lecture was „ Social Science in an Age of Transition”. The political events in Austria in spring 2000 prompted the author to modify the content and the title of the lecture. The essay expresses his protest against the racist rhetoric, as directly or indirectly used by J. Haider's Austrian Free Party, which became a member of the Austrian government. Moreover -and this is the main point of the article -the author explains and interprets European and Western xenophobia and racism by using his theory of the world system. The author uncovers the responsibility of all social sciences for their inability to disclose and to name the roots of racism, which dangerously threatens the contemporary world. When explaining eurocentrism and racism in European social sciences, the author starts with an analysis of their contemporary forms after 1989, moves back to the world system after 1945, and continues by putting racism into the context of the world system after 1492. The final part is devoted to the period of the chaotic transformation of the world system after 2000. Its outcome is intrinsically unpredictable. But the crisis opens the door to new developments in the social sciences, which will move from a mere analysis of the pan-European world, considered to be the world of modernity and civilisation, to a more complex understanding of the diversified global system. In times of major fluctuations, the social sciences have a chance to intervene in historical processes, and a moral responsibility to try to change the world into a more human one.
This essay deals with the transformation of modern partner relationships in the age of late modernity. The first part characterises modern partner relationships, showing that they are based on a ...process of self-disclosure of mutual truth which is connected with the construction of social reality, the redefinition of identity and the perception of sexuality. The age of late modernity brings about a sense of doubtfulness toward truth. In this moment modern partner relationships change. Self-disclosure is replaced with the quality of time spent with a partner. In the age of late modernity it is not important who the partner is but how nice it is to be with him or her.

The essay critically examines the main claim of the book Religia jako idolatria Religion as Idolatry by Ireneusz Ziemiński, according to which religion is necessarily idolatry. The author argues that the thesis is insufficiently justified and points out several topic that require further discussion.
The study is a multi-contextual review of the recollective essay by Piotr Matywiecki, entitled Old Edifice (Stary Gmach, Warsaw 2016). Not only do Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Koschany and Anita Jarzyna ...discuss the biographical dimension of the text devoted to the former premises of the Library of the University of Warsaw, where the author – a recognised poet and expert on Warsaw – worked for many years, but they also focus on another, more universal aspect of his deliberations, which tell a story about the departure of a certain intellectual generation – about an intellectual ethos and its genius loci on the map of Warsaw. At the same time, the reviewers emphasise and thematise the essential meaning of the essayistic form which favours erudite digressions and the composition of the book that is, to a great extent, subordinated to the logic of the depicted space and its spectral afterimages. // Szkic jest wielokontekstowym omówieniem wspomnieniowego eseju Piotra Matywieckiego pt. Stary gmach (Warszawa 2016).
In the article, I consider Jacek Wojtysiak’s critique of the probabilistic argument from the existence of a great fact of evil for the non-existence of God. I suggest that J. Wojtysiak’s critique of this argument should be modified in such a way that it does not lead to the conclusion that God is the cause of evil. I suggest to change the concept of God’s causality. I also point to a different way of weakening the probabilistic argument from evil than the one chosen by J. Wojtysiak. I propose to undermine the premise that evil exists, given naturalism. Next, I briefly refer to the difficulties of naturalistic moral realism and point to evolutionary arguments that debunk moral realism. In the context of these difficulties, I consider the position of Paul Draper, the pioneer of the probabilistic (Bayesian) argument from evil for atheism, and try to show some of the weaknesses of his views. I then formulate a theistic deductive argument from the existence of evil and suggest that, for reasons of simplicity, deductive over probabilistic arguments should be preferred by defenders of theism.
W pierwszej przedstawiam argument J.L. Schellenberga z „Bożej ukrytości” oraz rekonstruuję argumentację J. Wojtysiaka z „wielkiego faktu wiary”. W drugiej części próbuję pokazać, że istnienie niemoralnych wierzących podważa tezę o powszechności wiary w teistycznego Boga. W trzeciej części przedstawiam oba argumenty jako wspierające tezę ultymizmu.
Of the many issues that Jacek Wojtysiak addressed in his new book Między ukryciem a jawnością Between Hiddenness and Openness (2023), the polemic with John L. Schellenberg regarding the problem of God’s hiddenness deserves special attention. Schellenberg in an ingenious way wants to show that the very existence of atheists tests the truth of the thesis about the existence of a personal God. In response, J. Wojtysiak reverses J.L. Schellenberg’s argument, claiming that the universality of faith tests an atheist’s conviction. The aim of the article is to show that just as the proper conclusion of J.L. Schellenberg’s argument is not an atheistic thesis, J. Wojtysiak’s argument does not actually defend theism. It would rather be said about both arguments that they are arguments that support ultimism.
The article consists of three parts. In the first one, I present Schellenberg’s argument from “God's hiddenness” and reconstruct J. Wojtysiak’s argument from the “great fact of faith.” In the second part, I try to show that the existence of immoral believers undermines the thesis about the universality of belief in a theistic God. In the third part, I present both arguments as supporting the ultimism thesis.
Jacek Wojtysiak argues that by claiming the great fact of faith one can demonstrate the superiority of theism over atheism. Against this view, I formulate three objections: an objection from the statistical yearbook, an objection from the inconsiderable fact of faith, and an objection from nonempirical reasons. The objection from the statistical yearbook draws attention to the fact that the greatness of a fact of faith is always relativized to the moment in time at which it is stated. And this raises the question of which fact the theist should invoke. The objection from the inconsiderable fact of faith suggests that, in the dispute between theism and atheism, it does not matter whether the fact of faith is pluralizable, and thus how many entities are involved. The objection from non-empirical reasons promotes the view that establishing the empirical circumstances of certain religions does not bring the theists and atheists closer to resolving their debate.
