Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is a classic that has been taught for many years in US Schools. However, it is a complex text to teach, and in today's school curricula, questions arise ...regarding what versions to use and what approaches would be most suitable and beneficial for students and teachers. This thesis provides a comparative analysis of pedagogical approaches to examine which methods provide the most successful plan for teaching Holocaust literature and seeks a method that respects both the subject's emotional and disturbing nature and students' needs and emotional maturity. This analysis shows that historical and literary contexts can be combined into one, collaborative approach to help students form a complete view of the Holocaust. The thesis is a valuable resource on how to teach other traumatic texts on historical oppression. Tales of the Secret Annex, separate from the diary, is used as well.
This project examines the evolution of Anne Frank(apostrophe)s image among the American public throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and analyzes how this public perception was ...influenced by the theatrical interpretation of the diarist(apostrophe)s story. Examining the theatrical interpretation of the story from its creation through the modern day reveals that the intentional manufacturing of Anne Frank(apostrophe)s characterization specific to American audiences of the 1955 production significantly affected public understanding of the historical story and continues to complicate the public(apostrophe)s relationship with the play(apostrophe)s heroine. This evolving relationship has been highlighted particularly through analysis of the original script(apostrophe)s creation, public reactions to the various incarnations of the script over time, comparisons between the major script adaptations, and case studies that demonstrate twenty-first century attitudes toward the play. By illustrating the influence of the 1955 dramatization of "The Diary of Anne Frank" on the American public(apostrophe)s perception of the historical story, this research draws attention to the areas in which historicity was sacrificed for the sake of marketing the production and ultimately highlights the importance of the theatrical interpretation in shaping Anne Frank(apostrophe)s iconic role in American culture.
By doing so, Sachs becomes a seer, a Jewish mystic akin to the Baal Shem. ... as Ruth Dinesen suggests, Sachs regains her identity as a German-Jew by accepting the renewed faith of Hasidism as her ...calling: She embraces the biblical myth, the history of the Diaspora, and considers herself, in Buber's sense, a part of the dispersed and persecuted Jewish people, who are entrusted with a special God-given task.
Collective memory cannot be divorced from its construction in culture. As the Broadway version of "The Diary of Anne Frank did so phenomenally, plays, novels and movies generate cultural perceptions ...in ways that are particularly problematic and that stimulate further media reworking of the memory. Sicher attempts to illustrate this with material which is often disturbing for its provocative or shocking use of Holocaust memories.
The Holocaust is an atrocity that remains a vital area of study regardless of how many decades pass. It presents educators with opportunities to discuss not only the historical facts of the event but ...also the numerous reasons it is considered a watershed event of the twentieth century. Holocaust education also has the potential to support students' moral development and to help instill in them a sense of global awareness. Although educators may view the Holocaust as a daunting topic to teach, literary works serve as an effective approach to historical education. When educators incorporate literature into the study of the Holocaust, the brutalities endured by victims are personalized, helping to turn facts and statistics into the experiences of real people. Biographical novels, such as The Diary of Anne Frank, are the most common Holocaust literature taught in schools, but educators should not overlook young adult literature. Authors of young adult literature present stories that relay historical information while encouraging students' engagement throughout an academic unit. These literary texts also promote before-, during-, and after-reading activities that increase students' historical knowledge and reading comprehension and improve students' quality of writing while meeting various Common Core State Standards, which are becoming more prevalent in schools across the United States.
This thesis follows my journey through the process of bringing to life the role of Mrs. Petronella van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Included are: the ...research and analysis done prior to the commencement of rehearsal, my journal cataloguing the rehearsal process, and a conclusion documenting my personal review of the process.
Hanley comments on the Jewish Americans, who tried to bury the words of a young heroine, Rachel Corrie, the brave 23-year-old American girl crushed to death on Mar 16, 2003 as she tried to prevent ...the demolition of a civilian family's home in Gaza Strip. She stresses that when Jewish theater patrons and their rabbis heard that Corrie's words would be brought to life at the New York Theater Workshop--as they had earlier in London--they complained. Artistic director James Nicola's theater suddenly "postponed" indefinitely the US debut of "My Name Is Rachel Corrie."
