This article discusses the extent and conditions of Jewish participation in Swedish society c. 1870-1900. Whereas earlier research on Jewish history in Sweden had pictured this period as a time of ...peaceful integration, recent studies have stressed the continuities of cultural representations of ‘the Jew’ as essentially different from ‘the Swede’. Taking the city of Gothenburg as an example, this article offers a new approach by discussing the role of conflicting national and urban elements within liberal self-identification. With regard to urban identities, attitudes of toleration and religious pluralism went side by side with the liberal representation of Gothenburg as being different – different from its rural hinterland, but also from the capital Stockholm. These images of Gothenburg as being exceptionally progressive and open-minded facilitated Jewish participation in the city’s communal politics and associational life. On a national level, however, the ambiguities of Swedish liberal thinking persisted: An increasingly politicised discussion about national identity from the 1880s onwards reveals that the protagonists of Gothenburg liberalism had far greater difficulties in including Jews into their vision of the Swedish nation than the imagined liberties of Gothenburg city culture would suggest.
The Swedish city of Göteborg, located on the west coast of Sweden, is the country’s western gateway. Göteborg dates back to the 1600s when it was founded to function as both a port and a defensive ...position. From the beginning the city saw an influx of people from other countries and Göteborg at one point was known as ‘little London’. Soon industries were introduced and the town became an important commercial centre, growing rapidly in both area and population during the second half of the nineteenth century. Town districts subsequently developed different identities and these can still be experienced today. The town’s heavy industry and shipbuilding were important up to recent times but today the city has made the transition to become a knowledge centre and also an attractive city for tourism. Planning for the future aims to consolidate Göteborg as a dynamic regional centre and an attractive place to live with its diversified urban environment enhanced by its natural qualities. The city aims to create a climate of participation among the inhabitants, corporations and organizations in the region. Ultimately, success will be measured in terms of the city’s ability to engage with all sections of the rapidly expanding community.
Unter dem Rahmenthema Visionen und Illusionen fand am 4./5. April 2014 an der Universität Göteborg die 11. Arbeitstagung schwedischer Germanistinnen und Germanisten Text im Kontext statt. Der ...vorliegende Band versammelt ausgewählte Beiträge, die in ihrer Vielfalt zugleich einen Eindruck der Forschungsansätze und -projekte der Germanistik in Schweden vermitteln. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht von der Untersuchung frühneuzeitlicher Kochbücher zur Analyse des RAF-Manifests Die Rote Armee aufbauen; von der Betrachtung der Sprachbiographie einer Spätaussiedlerin zu literaturwissenschaftlichen Textanalysen bzw. Interpretationen jüngerer Dramen von Christoph Hein, Simon Urbans Roman Plan D und Pilgerinnenberichten über den Jakobsweg. Eine Analyse des Neologismus’ «Sternenkind» und vergleichende Grammatikstudien runden den Band ab. Die Begriffe Visionen und Illusionen ermöglichen Brückenschläge zwischen Literaturwissenschaft und Sprachwissenschaft und erscheinen nicht zuletzt aufgrund ihrer gesellschaftlichen Dimension prädestiniert für die Öffnung hin zu kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen.
In ihrem Artikel diskutieren die Verfasser die Lehrerausbildung im Fach Sozialwissenschaften in Schweden. Das Lehramtsstudium im Fach Sozialwissenschaften ist im Vergleich zu anderen Studiengängen ...dieses Faches unterschiedlich organisiert. Die heutige Lehrerausbildung ist, als Ergebnis der Deregulierung des schwedischen Bildungssystems in den neunziger Jahren, in lokaler Verantwortung, und es bestehen große Unterschiede zwischen der Ausbildung je nach Universität. Der Beitrag verfolgt zwei Ziele: Zum einen geht er den Ursprüngen des heutigen Zustandes der Lehrerausbildung im Fach Sozialwissenschaften von Mitte der 1990er Jahre bis zu den frühen 2000er Jahren nach. Das zweite Ziel ist, in vergleichender Weise den unterschiedlichen Aufbau des Studiengangs an verschiedenen schwedischen Hochschulen - Umea, Göteborg und Uppsala - zu beschreiben und zu diskutieren. Es soll insbesondere das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der traditionellen Organisation der Disziplin Sozialwissenschaften und den Anforderungen an das Schulfach Sozialkunde analysiert werden (teilw. This paper investigates the development of poverty in Sweden using micro data derived from tax files for the city of Göteborg for the years 1925, 1936, 1947, 1958 as well as more recent information. ...We define poverty as living in a household with a disposable income lower than a poverty line that represents a constant purchasing power all years, as well as poverty lines defined as 60 percent of contemporary median income.
Clear reductions of poverty from 1925 to 1947 as well as from 1958 to 1983 are found. We argue that an important poverty reducing mechanism during both periods was narrowing earnings disparities. Further we claim that the poverty reduction from the end of the 1950s to the first half of the 1980s was the outcome of improved transfer systems as well as the establishment of pronounced characteristics of present-day Sweden: the dual earner system.

Nach der Richtlinie des Gemeinsamen Bundesausschusses gehören zu den Früherkennungsmaßnahmen, die nur bei Männern durchgeführt werden, nur die Inspektion und Palpation des äußeren ...Genitales sowie die rektale Untersuchung. Damit steht diese Richtlinie im Widerspruch zur interdisziplinären S3-Leitlinie Prostatakarzinom, die eine alleinige digital-rektale Untersuchung der Prostata ohne PSA-Bestimmung als Früherkennungsuntersuchung für „nicht ausreichend“ hält. Studien zum PSA-gestützten Screening beim Prostatakarzinom legen nahe, dass die karzinomspezifische Sterblichkeit signifikant reduziert werden kann. Jüngst publizierte Ergebnisse der ERSPC-Studie ergeben eine „Number Needed to Screen“ (NNS) von 357 und eine „Number Needed to Treat“ (NNT) von 23, um einem Mann Metastasen eines Prostatakarzinoms zu ersparen. In der Göteborg-Studie mit der längsten Nachbeobachtungszeit ergibt sich sogar eine NNS von 293 und eine Zahl von 12 zu diagnostizierenden Männern, um einen Tod am Prostatakarzinom zu verhindern. Für die PSA-gestützte Früherkennung lässt sich damit eine Reduktion der karzinomspezifischen Sterblichkeit um 31–56% errechnen. Demgegenüber gibt es für Nierentumoren, Urothelkarzinome des oberen Harntrakts und der Blase sowie für Hodentumoren keine Früherkennungsmaßnahmen, für die eine (positive) Nutzen-Risiko-Bewertung vorliegt.
