While the typical Japanese male politician glides through his district in air-conditioned taxis, the typical female voter trundles along the side streets on a simple bicycle. In this first ...ethnographic study of the politics of the average female citizen in Japan, Robin LeBlanc argues that this taxi-bicycle contrast reaches deeply into Japanese society.
To study the relationship between gender and liberal democratic citizenship, LeBlanc conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in suburban Tokyo among housewives, volunteer groups, consumer cooperative movements, and the members of a committee to reelect a female Diet member who used her own housewife status as the key to victory. LeBlanc argues that contrary to popular perception, Japanese housewives are ultimately not without a political world.
Full of new and stimulating material, engagingly written, and deft in its weaving of theoretical perspectives with field research, this study will not only open up new dialogues between gender theory and broader social science concerns but also provide a superb introduction to politics in Japan as a whole.

Educational institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina should be among the most important institutional bearers of the process of socialization of children and youth, as well as the creation and transfer ...of socially valued knowledge and skills. Gender responsible education is especially important for the personal development and quality of life of every person, because it is a significant factor in democratization, economic development, prosperity and sustainability of any society. This article addresses the issue of gender discrimination Gender in the education system, which can be particularly dangerous because it directly supports stereotypes about inequality between girls and boys, men and women. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is necessary to create and implement proper laws to improve the overall education system, which will truly take care of the balance of existing gender hierarchies through changes in education and textbook policies.

The aim of this article is to investigate the origins of the Women’s Front, a women’s movement co-founded by Norwegian Maoists in the 1970s. The analysis seeks to capture the dynamics of women’s ...activism in relation to the broader political landscape and, concurrently, to understand the Women’s Front in a broader temporal perspective. The sources used were newspapers and publications issued by different branches of the Norwegian Maoist movement. Women’s politics are analysed both as a grassroots phenomenon and a part of agitation which emerged under the 1972 anti-EEC campaign. This makes it possible to show how women’s politics found a place on the agenda of Norwegian Maoism and what kind of obstacles it had to face on its way to gaining autonomy. The patterns of feminist mobilisation demonstrated by this analysis can make a contribution to the broader debate on the role and place of feminism in traditional political structures.
Časopis Gender a výzkum/Gender and Research začal vycházet v roce 2000, tenkrát ještě pod názvem Gender, rovné příležitosti a výzkum, ve formátu několikastránkového bulletinu.
Many different metaphors that illustrate the mechanisms of gender stratification in the workplace have been distinguished in research dealing with the issues of relationships between gender and ...organizational structures. However, these descriptions were constructed on the basis of research on hierarchical and bureaucratic organizational structures. Meanwhile, organizations focused on producing innovations, emerging on the basis of the neoliberal model of the economy, are undergoing significant changes. New models of the organization of work (based on flat structures, self-managed teams, or the use of ICT) create space for reconfiguring the gender inequality relationship in the workplace. The aim of the article is to characterize the mechanisms of gender stratification in innovative professional organizations – technology startups. Based on the results of qualitative research, the text indicates the limitations and possible reinterpretations of the metaphors (often present in the sociological literature on the subject) used to describe patterns of gender inequalities in startups (the metaphor of “glass cellar”, “glass walls” and “horizontal segregation”).
