Inspired by a series of Frisian names that seemed to indicate an unknown language, Leibniz tried to discover the origins of the Frisian language around the years 1693/94. Under his hands the question ...took on European dimensions and became the focal point of a theory about the settlement of the European continent and the relationships of the peoples inhabiting it. However, the aim of this article is not to discuss Leibniz’s results (which can be found in the attached text), but rather to take a close look at his historiographical method. Thanks to the excellent conservation of the rich records collected by Leibniz for his “opus historicum”, his method of working can be traced in detail, from taking excerpts through organizing to putting forward hypotheses. Against that background, it becomes evident, to what degree Leibniz added his own theories to the source material evaluated and to research literature studied by him. In result, there evolves the perception of the characteristics of Leibniz’s work as historian.
Inspiré par une série de noms frisons qui semblaient indiquer une langue inconnue, Leibniz a essayé de découvrir l’origine de la langue frisonne autour des années 1693/94. Sous ses mains, la question a immédiatement pris des dimensions européennes et est devenue le point crucial d’une théorie sur le peuplement du continent et sur les relations de parenté des peuples qui l’ habitent. Cependant, l’objectif n’est pas tant de présenter les résultats de Leibniz (qui peuvent être tirés du texte ci-joint)que de reconstruire plutôt ses méthodes de travail historiographique: Grâce à la transmission exceptionelle du matériel pour son « opus historicum », son travail peut être retracé en détail, de l’extraction à l’arrangement et à l’élaboration d’hypothèses. Dans ce contexte, il apparait ce que Leibniz – au-delà des sources étudiées et de la littérature de recherche – a rajouté par ses propres théorèmes et – finalement – il devient évident ce qui a vraiment fait de lui un historien.
Angeregt durch eine Reihe friesischer Personennamen, die ihm auf eine unbekannte Sprache hinzudeuten schienen, versuchte Leibniz um 1693/94 die Herkunft des Friesischen zu entdecken. Die Frage nahm unter seinen Händen sogleich europäische Dimensionen an und wurde zum Kristallisationspunkt einer Theorie über die Besiedlung des Kontinents und die Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen der ihn bewohnenden Völker. Hier sollen aber weniger Leibniz’ Ergebnisse (die sich dem beigefügten Text entnehmen lassen) referiert als vielmehr seine historiographische Arbeitsweise rekonstruiert werden: Dank der außergewöhnlich guten Überlieferung des Materials zu seinem „opus historicum“ lässt sich seine Arbeit vom Exzerpieren über das Ordnen bis hin zur Hypothesenbildung im Detail nachzeichnen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird, was Leibniz den ausgewerteten Quellen und der Forschungsliteratur an eigenen Theoremen hinzufügte, deutlich und zeichnet sich ab, was ihn als Historiker eigentlich ausmachte.

European culture has been greatly influenced by the Christian Church and Greek and Roman culture. However, the peoples of Europe’s remote past, whom the Greeks, Romans, and their medieval heirs ...called the «barbarians», also left their mark. Closely examining ancient and medieval narratives and the codifications of laws, this thoughtfully conducted comparative study sheds light on the illiterate societies of the early Germanic and Slavic peoples. The picture that emerges is one of communities built on kinship, neighborly, and tribal relations, where decision making, judgement, and punishment were carried out collectively, and the distinction between the sacred and profane was unknown.

The Vikings descended upon Europe at the close of the 8th century, invading the continent's western seas and river systems, trading, raiding and spreading terror. With the collapse of the Viking commercial empire, Sweden and the other Scandinavian countries struggled to survive, their hardships exacerbated by internal strife, foreign domination and the Black Death. This book details the development of Scandinavia-Sweden in particular-from the end of the Ice Age, through a series of prehistoric cultures, the Bronze and Iron ages, to the Viking period and late Middle Ages. Recent research suggests a Swedish origin of the Goths, who helped dismember the Roman Empire, and evidence of Swedish participation in the western Viking expeditions. Special attention is given to Eastern Europe, where Sweden dominated commerce through the conquest of trade towns and the river systems of Russia.
