How ideas of gender and climate change intersect with our path to a livable future. When you think "climate change," who comes to mind? Who's doing the science, the reporting, the protesting, the ...suffering? In Women and Climate Change, Nicole Detraz asks where women in the global North figure in the picture, what that means, and why it matters. Her answers fill critical gaps in what we know about the politics of climate change and gender.Representations of climate change, like perceptions of gender, can make a profound difference in understanding expectations and actions around social, cultural, and political issues. Interviewing women living in the global North who work in the climate change sphere, Detraz examines the crucial links between notions of climate change and gender—in particular, how women are portrayed in climate change debates. Where is their presence or absence recognized? What tasks are they expected to perform? What factors influence their roles? The answers provide a nuanced account of the characteristics, conditions, and positions associated with women's activities in and experiences of climate change—a multifaceted portrayal of women that also demonstrates the generalization and essentializing that can hinder goals of sustainability and gender justice.Because gender is a social construction, Detraz reminds us, change is possible. Her book offers the suggestion, and the hope, that identifying connections between ideas of gender and climate change might also alter our vision of a livable future.
The volume examines from a comparative perspective the phenomenon of aesthetic disruption within the various arts in contemporary culture. It assumes that the political potential of contemporary art ...is not solely derived from presenting its audiences with openly political content, but rather from creating a space of perception and interaction using formal means: a space that makes hegemonic structures of action and communication observable, thus problematizing their self-evidence. The contributions conceptualize historical and contemporary politics of form in the media, which aim to be more than mere shock strategies, which are concerned not just with the 'narcissistic' exhibition of art as art, but also with the creation of a new common horizon of experience. They combine the analysis of paradigmatic works, procedures and actions with reference to theoretical debates in the fields of literature, media and art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The essay-collection shows how textual, visual, auditive or performative strategies disclose their own ways of functioning, intervene in automated processes of reception and thus work on stimulating a sense of political possibilities. Communities of publics where citizens together develop informed opinion as basis for political decisions is crucial to democracy; and adult education can contribute vitally to such communities. This ...was argued by two critical social scientists, Charles Wright Mills and Oskar Negt. Researching and writing in different situations and drawing on different traditions, they voiced many of the same concerns about the inequalities and contradictions of modern capitalist societies. Mills and Negt argued that citizens and publics need to grasp the interrelations between society at large and individual lives and troubles. It is also necessary to transgress the immediate reality and its options, to imagine how societies and lives could take different turns, both in negative and positive directions. This article makes a case that imaginative fiction literature can help critical social science and adult education in promoting such social imagination. (DIPF/Orig.)
(DIPF/Orig.).
"Educational advancement" in the sense of aspiring for higher qualifications is integrated quite differently into biographical data and experiences and can have the character of avoiding the dangers of downward mobility and of gaining social respectability. This finding is supported by three case studies provided in this article. A qualitative, empirical study (2012-2015) surveyed participants in long-term continuing education programmes in a variety of occupational areas. The focus was on the correlation between participation in continuing education, biographical data and images of society. The main conclusion of both authors: "Whether the promise of advancement in continuing education can be kept for those remaining in the courses we cannot say. Yet in nearly all the groups selected, continuing education has opened up subjectively new ways of life and professional options, which in the case of educational achievement goes hand in hand with a gain in self-confidence and the ability to act so that further advancement paths appear to be possible." Finally, increased self-reflection on the part of continuing education institutions is urged so that persons who have a tendency to compete and assert themselves individually are not privileged. Instead, concepts should be developed that open up the opportunity for social mobility and the expansion of one's perspective of the world to a broader spectrum of social backgrounds. (DIPF/Orig.).
