Szabó László (1905-1984) 1905. november 11-én született Budapesten és ugyanott hunyt el 1984. szeptember 27-én. 1918-ig Kolozsvárott élt. Egyetemi tanulmányait Budapesten és Párizsban végezte. A budapesti Műegyetem Közgazdaságtudományi Karán 1931-ben gazdaságtörténetből doktorált. 1935. és 1944. között a Magyar Rádió irodalmi osztályvezetője. 1945. és 1948. között a Magyar Képzőművészeti Főiskolán az európai művelődéstörténet tanára. Esszéket, elbeszéléseket, irodalmi cikkeket írt a Nyugatba, a Magyar Csillagba és más folyóiratokba. Első könyve 1935-ben jelent meg. Ezt 1948-ig további tizennégy kötet követte. 1938-ban Baumgarten-díjat kapott. 1948. végén Olaszországba utazott, ahonnét nem tért vissza. Katedrájáról lemondott. Előbb Rómában, majd Firenzében élt. 1951-ben Londonba költözött, ahol 1972-ig a BBC magyar osztályának belső munkatársa volt. Nyugalomba vonulása után a BBC külső munkatársaként és a Szabad Európa Rádió számára tevékenykedett. Cs. Szabó László az 1949. utáni nyugat-európai magyar szellemi élet kulcsszemélye volt. A Hollandiai Mikes Kelemen Kör 'osztályfőnöke'-ként tekintette. Az Európai Protestáns Magyar Szabadegyetem tiszteletbeli elnöke volt. Széleskörű, az egész világ kultúráját átölelő ismerete, óriási olvasottsága, nyelvtudása, prófétai jelleme, szónoki művészete, meleg személyi bája őt arra a fontos feladatra predesztinálta, amelyet évtizedeken keresztül fennkölt stílussal betöltött: a magyar emigráció szellemi vezetője szerepére. Cs. Szabó László nemzetének akkor tette a legnagyobb és legfelbecsülhetetlenebb szolgálatát, midőn 1949. után Nyugaton égve tartotta az egész magyar történelemben kifejezésre jutó, a magát az egyetemes emberi értékeknek szentelő független és magának mindig a legmagasabb mértéket állító magyar szellem fáklyáját. Ilymódon inspirálta különösképpen az 1956. után Nyugatra került magyar tudósokat, írókat, művészeket. Szerepét a magyar kultúra és a kristálytiszta magyar erkölcsi világ fenntartásában és Nyugat-Európában történt kibontakoztatásában nem lehet túlbecsülni. Akiknek megadatott, hogy vele együtt dolgozzanak - mint többek között a Hollandiai Mikes Kelemen Kör keretében - mindig hálával, mély megbecsüléssel és tisztelettel emlékeznek és gondolnak reá. Tanulmányai, esszéi, elbeszélései, versei elsősorban a Látóhatárban-Új Látóhatárban, az Irodalmi Ujságban, a Katolikus Szemlében jelentek meg. Olasz tárgyú műveiért az Olasz Köztársaság lovagja kitüntetést kapta. 1990-ben posztumusz Kossuth-díjban részesült. Kívánságának megfelelően Sárospatakon nyert örök nyugvóhelyet. In Charles Ray's Plank Piece I‐II (1973), the artist creates a sculptural assemblage that holds him uncomfortably aloft. There has been little critical attention to his earliest performed sculptures ...created between from around 1973 to 1980, beyond characterizations as jejune experiments, homages, or hijinks. I seize on a statement by Ray that when he claimed in the 1970s that the works ‘had no meaning – or rather their meaning is dynamic, … my friends laughed at me and said, “You idiot, it looks like the aftermath of a car wreck or a Goya print”.’ I pursue his ‘idiotic’ invocations: an eerily reminiscent etching by Goya; automobile disasters; the American War in Vietnam; and other contingent phenomena. The effect is a sustained experiment in looking, reading, and writing. Reading against the grain, Plank Piece I‐II provokes hermeneutic challenges – and new methodologies for criticism – towards a refashioning of meaning and history in performance.

It came to Me quite suddenly one morning as I sat reading at home in Lewes that what I desperately wanted to do was go to Madrid to see Goyas The Burial of the Sardine. The moment before I had been ...thinking of something completely different, and nothing could have been further from my mind than Goya or his painting; the next I could not wait to get on the plane to Madrid. Had someone mentioned it recently? Had I read about it somewhere? I had no recollection. I thought, I will go to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where I recalled the painting was housed, and I will sit there, or stand if there are no benches, and take it in. Yes, I thought, my mind now racing, I wall take it in, and then I will catch the late train to Le6n to see my old friend Juan Garcia Jimenez, whom I have not seen for a long time, and who is certainly not getting any younger.
Resumen: Las pequeñas ciudades de las zonas despobladas de España buscan actualmente formas de promocionar su patrimonio cultural en su intento de crear riqueza. La ciudad natal de Francisco de Goya ...-Fuendetodos, en la región de Zaragoza, España- alberga un importante conjunto de arte público que no ha sido analizado hasta ahora. Nuestro propósito es examinar la evolución histórica del arte público en esta localidad desde la erección del Monumento a Goya del artista Julio Antonio en 1920 -un hito importante en la historia del arte público español- hasta la creación del Museo de Arte Callejero Goya, un museo de arte urbano al aire libre que se extiende por todo el pueblo. Nuestro trabajo de investigación se basa en material periodístico, así como en documentación de archivo y fotografías, para dar cuenta de la historia de los monumentos y murales urbanos de Fuendetodos. El análisis del trabajo de campo realizado in situ revela el potencial de este pueblo, ya que su colección de arte contemporáneo al aire libre puede servir para revitalizar la zona y ayudar en la lucha contra la despoblación.

Abstract: Small towns in Spain’s depopulated areas are currently seeking ways to promote their cultural heritage in their bid to create wealth. Francisco de Goya’s birthplace—Fuendetodos in the region of Zaragoza, Spain—holds a significant ensemble of public art which has not been analysed up to now. It is our purpose to examine the historical evolution of public art in this town from the erection of the Monumento a Goya by artist Julio Antonio in 1920—a major landmark in the history of Spain’s public art—to the creation of the Goya Street Art Museum, an open-air urban art museum that extends throughout the village. Our research work is based on newspaper and periodical material as well as archive documentation and photographs in order to render an accurate account of the history of Fuendetodos’ urban monuments and murals. The analysis of the fieldwork carried out in situ reveals the potential of this town as its collection of open-air contemporary art may serve to revitalize the area and assist in the struggle against depopulation.

To articulate the critic's problem in terms of what artists do, and turn this to practical use in the problem of political images, I focus on a particular episode in modern art, where subjective ...visual experience, and the encounter with other persons it constitutes, becomes integral to the content of the work of art. I will begin with a well-studied public project of Francisco Goya's, whose interpretation runs aground on neglect of the subjective. Turning to the present, I will suggest what Goya's lessons about the subjectivity of ridicule can teach us about our acrimonious and ongoing debate over caricature. In light of this I will return to Goya and his problematic reception in the nineteenth century, asking what our sharpened sense for the subjectivity of aesthetic judgment and for the tolerance its exercise requires mean for the interpretation of art. I begin with Goya's best-known public performance, Los Caprichos of 1799.
