During the past forty years, thousands of studies have been carried out on the subject of happiness. Some have explored the levels of happiness or dissatisfaction associated with typical daily ...activities, such as working, seeing friends, or doing household chores. Others have tried to determine the extent to which income, family, religion, and other factors are associated with the satisfaction people feel about their lives. The Gallup organization has begun conducting global surveys of happiness, and several countries are considering publishing periodic reports on the growth or decline of happiness among their people. One nation, tiny Bhutan, has actually made "Gross National Happiness" the central aim of its domestic policy. How might happiness research affect government policy in the United States--and beyond? In The Politics of Happiness, former Harvard president Derek Bok examines how governments could use the rapidly growing research data on what makes people happy--in a variety of policy areas to increase well-being and improve the quality of life for all their citizens.
The situation has been unpredictable and volatile, which calls for a great deal of flexibility and skilful handling of day-today chores. Pessimism and social divisions are too widespread among ...grown-ups; perhaps we should start learning from our children. A wonderful and mysterious law of nature stipulates that there are three things we strive for in our lives - happiness, good health and peace of mind.
The Sumarah sect from Sumoroto Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency, is one of Indonesia's original religious identities. The modern era has brought in many social problems derived from the shifting of ...traditional-local values towards Western values. The degradation of ethical and morality codes in the community is one of the huge consequences of this phenomenon. Spiritual practices for Sumarah followers are not limited to carrying out rituals but to achieve a very high goal: a meaningful and happy life. This article examines the concept of happiness for adherents of the Sumarah sect. By using interpretive phenomenological analysis and participatory observation, this study found several important points. First, the prostration of Sumarah or ritual practices carried out by some residents of Sumoroto Subdistrict are an attempt to find a way to happiness. Second, the ritual tradition carried out by the Sumarah adherents shows a complex relationship between the teachings of Islam and Javanese traditions and culture. Third, according to them Sumarah’s adherents, the ritual practices carried out by Sumarah followers not only bring a sense of happiness but also grow the power that becomes psychic and physical energy.
This open access book examines an interdependent approach to happiness and well-being, one that contrasts starkly with dominant approaches that have originated from Western culture(s). It highlights ...the diversity of potential pathways towards happiness and well-being globally, and answers calls - voiced in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - for more socially and environmentally sustainable models. Leading global organizations including the OECD, UNICEF, and UNESCO are now proposing human happiness and well-being as a more sustainable alternative to a myopic focus on GDP growth. Yet, the definition of well-being offered by these organizations derives largely from the philosophies, social sciences, and institutional patterns of Europe and the United States. Across seven chapters this book carefully probes the inadequacy of these approaches to well-being globally and reveals the distorting effect this has on how we imagine our world, organize institutions, and plan our collective future(s). It shares a wealth of evidence and examples from across East Asia - a region where interdependence remains foregrounded - and concludes by provocatively arguing that interdependence may provide a more sustainable approach to happiness and well-being in the 21st century. A timely and accessible book, it offers fresh insights for scholars and policymakers working in the areas of psychology, health, sociology, education, international development, public policy, and philosophy. This is an open access book.

Aborda as escolhas exigidas.
Happiness today is not just a possibility or an option but a requirement and a duty. To fail to be happy is to fail utterly. Happiness has become a religion--one whose smiley-faced god looks down in ...rebuke upon everyone who hasn't yet attained the blessed state of perpetual euphoria. How has a liberating principle of the Enlightenment--the right to pursue happiness--become the unavoidable and burdensome responsibility to be happy? How did we become unhappy about not being happy--and what might we do to escape this predicament? In Perpetual Euphoria, Pascal Bruckner takes up these questions with all his unconventional wit, force, and brilliance, arguing that we might be happier if we simply abandoned our mad pursuit of happiness.
