After lunch, Jerry Bird entertained us with songs from the French Wars, a pre-recorded Andrew Hewitt then espoused much critical theory prior to Tracy Hayes regaling us with 'Hardy's Silly Soldiers' ...followed by a panel discussion, which led in the 2020 THS AGM. On the following morning I led 20+ socially-distanced walkers along public rights of way around the entire area to the North of Dorchester which is threatened by housing development. The THS continues to protest about this planning proposal: letters from individuals carry much weight - so do please personally object to this application, if you care at all about the preservation of Hardy's landscape.
This collection covers the range of Thomas Hardy's works and their social and intellectual contexts, providing a comprehensive introduction to Hardy's life and times. Featuring short, lively ...contributions from forty-four international scholars, the volume explores the processes by which Hardy the man became Hardy the published writer; the changing critical responses to his work; his response to the social and political challenges of his time; his engagement with contemporary intellectual debate; and his legacy in the twentieth century and after. Emphasising the subtle and ongoing interaction between Hardy's life, his creative achievement and the unique historical moment, the collection also examines Hardy's relationship to such issues as class, education, folklore, archaeology and anthropology, evolution, marriage and masculinity, empire and the arts. A valuable contextual reference for scholars of Victorian and modernist literature, the collection will also prove accessible for the general reader of Hardy.

There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which, when taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life Is bound in shallows and in miseries. ...opportunities present ...themselves only infrequently, third opportunities almost never; consequently, I threw my proverbial hat in the ring and was eventually appointed. The book is best read, perhaps, as a portrait of the house, the family, and their milieu: if you want a sense of the social world Hardy's success as a novelist had opened up to him - a world Emma ...regarded as better suited to her own attainments and connections than her husband's - this is the book for you. The blurb describes it as combining the interest of a novel and a memoir, as a figure based on the author, and already fascinated by the idea of a fictional character (Henchard) living in a 'real' building (now, of course, Barclay's Bank in Dorchester) is approached by the phantom of Hardy, and invited to discover what Hardy missed in love. Many members of the Society will know Jacqueline from her time as the National Trust's Scholar in Residence at Max Gate, and may well have heard presentations from her at the Conference, at the Dorset County Museum, and the London lecture at Birkbeck College in 2014.

A compelling reading of Hardy's entanglement in the natural environment that questions anthropocentric assumptions appears in Simon Armitage's chapter "Winter Words in Various Moods and Metres," ...published in his new collection of essays, A Vertical Art: Chi. The weather in Hardy, Armitage argues, is "nearly always portent and symbol, and often plays a political role"; in this volume in particular, "the unpredictable and ungovernable character of the skies and seasons is a rascally and rebellious presence ... an irrepressible voice and one that speaks with the elemental authority of the natural world" (p. 208). Humanto-animal gestures are observed in some of the poems. ...Armitage makes an interesting point about how in "Last Week in October," the poet's depiction of a spider's web "feels as if Hardy has anticipated Yeats's 'Man has created death' declaration by four or five years" (p. 209). ...we cannot determine if "A Light Snow-Fall after Frost," one of the poems on which Armitage focuses, is a "poem of projection or of reflection, and whether Hardy is commenting on the ageing process from a position of anticipation or of experience" (p. 214).
Thomas Hardy" The Ruined Maid (1866), has been extensively examined within the context of the nineteenth century. It is often regarded as a representation of social themes during the Victorian era, ...the plight of working-class women as victims of sexual exploitation, the depiction of fallen women, the challenges of prostitution, and the incorporation of local attributes associated with the Dorset dialect. Moreover, the text's discourse is typically interpreted as a dialogue occurring between two characters, namely Melia and an unknown speaker. However, this study introduces a novel perspective by identifying a third character inherent within the recounted interaction. Furthermore, this paper aims to deviate from conventional interpretations, instead, it concentrates on aspects of the verse that pertain to philosophical concepts such as the influence of social ideologies. This objective is achieved by following the semiotic approach; the words are meticulously analyzed to unveil their underlying meanings, drawing inspiration from the works of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes. In addition, the notion of the gaze, as expounded by Michel Foucault, is engaged to shed light on the work's implications. The existentialist insights of Jean-Paul Sartre are also linked to the analysis. Furthermore, the poem's exploration of capitalism is informed by the views of Karl Marx, while gender-related aspects are interpreted through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir's theory.

IN THE VICTORIAN TIME WOMEN WERE NOT ENCOURAGED TO SEARCH FOR SELF-FULFILLMENT OF INDEPENDENCE. THEY WERE TAUGHT TO BE SUBMISSIVE TO THEIR FATHERS OR HUSBANDS AND TO DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO THEIR ...DUTIES. THOMAS HARDY IS KNOWN TO BE INFLUENCED BY THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE, ESPECIALLY WESSEX WHICH HE INCORPORATED IN MANY OF HIS NOVELS, AND TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES IS ALSO SET THERE. HE WAS A VICTORIAN REALIST WHO TRIED TO DEPICT THE SOCIAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE LIVES OF THOSE LIVING IN VICTORIAN ENGLAND, HE ALSO CRITICIZED BELIEFS RELATING TO MARRIAGE AND RELIGION, WHICH LIMITED PEOPLE'S LIVES.
