The paper investigates a specific period in the history of unreliable narration, or, more precisely, of its mimetic variation that is based on ontological misinformation. Using the example of three ...German-language literary texts of classical modernism, the functions and conditions of success of the literary device in question are analyzed. A comparison of the interpretation of reality offered by the texts allows for the construction of a cultural-historical tendency of development; however, the examined texts seem to position themselves chronologically in a retrograde manner to that tendency. Reasons for this paradox are explained in regards to the – particularly political – functionalization of the myth in classical modernism. The analysis of the requirements for a successful deception of the recipient is based on three narratological criteria. An examination of how these criteria are (or are not) met in the chosen texts reveals a need for more terminological refinement and additionally inspires a fundamental reinterpretation of one of the case examples.
In November 2002, an international conference was held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in London in order to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Hermann Hesse's birth. Twenty distinguished ...speakers from North and South America, Russia, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom attended the three-day conference with the specific aim of exploring the continuing importance of this widely read German-language author. This volume brings together the various responses to the complex challenge that Hesse, whose sheer success is sometimes seen as detracting from his status, presents to literary scholarship around the world. The author's current image among readers and scholars is approached from several distinct thematic and theoretical perspectives, with the objective of providing a concise overview of current research. The volume offers new readings of a number of Hesse's seminal works and makes a significant contribution to academic research into his past and present standing as a global icon. As the title suggests, the focus is on 'Hermann Hesse Today'. The book investigates his current significance for a modern readership, taking account of his importance in the lecture theatre and classroom, the multi-facetted applicability of his moral, ethical and aesthetic concerns in the context of a fragmented world, and the continuing relevance of his writings. With the ever-increasing importance of modern preoccupations such as the ecological movement or the growth of the internet, a fresh look at Hesse's works is long overdue. The most obvious sign of this is the appearance of a definitive, historical-critical edition of his works (prose, poetry, and literary criticism), which will give access to much hitherto unpublished material and stimulate fresh debates on an author who ranks among the best-known and most influential figures of the twentieth
century. This volume will be of interest to teachers of German in higher education and their students as well as researchers and the general readership that continues to take an interest in Hesse on both sides of the Atlantic.
The paper aims at seeking existentialist’s traits in the lead character of Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha by explicating the fundamental tenets of existentialism. Indubitably, Hesse’s portrayal of ...Siddhartha is highly influenced by Buddhist philosophy, therefore the paper will take a recourse to some concepts of Buddhist philosophy to establish the existentialist’s traits in Siddhartha. However, the paper does neither claim of any influence of existentialism on Hermann Hesse nor it establishes any impact of Buddhism on existentialism.

This article is a series of reflections on the uses Northrop Frye made of Johan Huizinga’s thesis about the play element in culture. It also glances at Frye’s view of homo ludens found in Proverbs ...8:30–1 and in Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game.
An intertextual reading of Ishmael's expulsion in Genesis 21 and Herman Hesse's Siddhartha illuminates Ishmael's path as a universal process of coming-of-age. We argue that the two works share major ...themes, which are reinforced and illustrated with common motifs. In both cases, the son is disengaged from the past and, after being reborn, establishes himself in the world.
The spiritual journey that Larry from The Razor's Edge makes after his traumatizing war experience deserves to be examined and its significance elucidated. Individuation, the central concept of ...Jungian psychology, offers a lens. In this interpretation, Larry's journey is understood as an individuation process whose three stages are represented by the shadow, the anima and the Self, all personified by the novel's characters. Just as individuation should be the goal of individual growth, Larry's spiritual journey exemplifies a solution to the spiritual crisis plaguing the historical background that the novel is set in.
It is well known that Karlheinz Stockhausen and Karel Goeyvaerts were imbued with the Catholic faith. For both composers, the development of serial music primarily arose from musical considerations, ...but beyond that, the invention of new compositional techniques also constituted an act of faith. Although their relationship to religion was at first essentially a private affair, limited to idealistic conceptions of music as representation of the Divine, both composers began to develop an interest in the functional use of serial and electronic music in the Catholic liturgy around 1955. The present article reconstructs this turn on the basis of recently published mutual correspondence and other archival materials. Included are also analyses of planned (Stockhausen) and realized (Goeyvaerts) mass compositions.
This research paper is an attempt to study "Man's" search to understand his existence in this universe and his final destination to reach enlightenment. The world is very complex for human beings to ...know fully as it is articulated through language. Western philosophy and history show that man has created so many realities and senses through languages. Therefore, each reality seems so expressive and convincing at its own yet it conflicts with other realities. The novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse demonstrates various angles of different realities created through individual experiences and language. He also presents the deconstruction of those ideologies through individual experience and language which once constructed. In novel Siddhartha, there is construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of various truths on the one hand and constant beliefs on the other hand which signifies the journey of East and West respectively. Moreover Siddhartha's journey towards enlightenment is Man's journey from materialism towards spiritualism. Human beings have become the masters of realities and systems but even though they are unable to reach the final reality, because they want to describe natural things through language which is manmade. Moreover, West has reached to Postmodernism whereas most of the Eastern countries are living in medieval ages. This research explores the ideological differences between East and West which seem true in their own sense but are quite opposite from each other. A comparative analysis will be conducted on Hesse's fictional account Siddhartha to investigate how Buddha posed as a spiritual sign for the East and how he positions and emerges as a modern figure for the West.
