Die „Zeitung“ enthält humorvolle Texte, u. a. ein dem ...Geburtstagskind gewidmetes Lied, ein Brief an ihn, eine „Petition“ an die Reichstagsabgeordnete, die von den beunruhigten Mütter junger Mädchen unterschrieben wurde, in der sie eine Forderung stellen, dass ein Mann, der tète-å- tète mit einem jungen Fräulein erwischt wurde, sollte sie im Laufe von vier Wochen unter Geldbuße oder Gefängnisstrafe (im Falle er seiner Opfer ein Kuss stiehlt) zum Altar führen. Jede Zeitungsseite ist mit den lustigen Bildern illustriert, z. B. mit dem Bild ein „Alkoholbarometer“ darstellend, wo als die Anzeiger die gemalten Männchen in verschiedenen Stadien des Alkoholrausches dienen.

Zawiera żartobliwe teksty m.in. piosenkę dedykowaną solenizantowi, liścik do niego, "petycję" skierowaną do posłów Reichstagu przez zaniepokojone matki młodych córek, w której postulują by mężczyzna przyłapany tète-å- tète z młodą panną miał obowiązek poprowadzić ją do ołtarza w przeciągu czterech tygodni od zajścia pod karą grzywny lub nawet więzienia (w przypadku skradzenia poszkodowanej całusa). Każda strona "gazetki" ilustrowana jest zabawnymi rysunkami, z których jeden przedstawia "barometr alkoholowy", gdzie wskaźnikiem są postaci obrazujące poszczególne stadia alkoholowego upojenia. Humorous “Beer’s Newspaper” self-prepared for the 30th birthday of President Max Janke by his colleagues. It contains joking texts, among others A song dedicated to a solenizer, a leaf to him, a “petition” addressed to the Reichstag deputies by anxious mothers of young daughters, in which they postulate that a man caught tète-å- tète with a young maiden was obliged to lead her to the altar within four weeks of the incident under the penalty of a fine or even prison (in the case of a stolen kiss). Each page of the “newsletter” is illustrated with funny drawings, one of which shows the “alcohol barometer,” where the indicator is the characters showing individual stages of alcohol intoxication. The nearly 300 stories in this lovely volume are from Sephardic oral literature and ethnic culture. They were told to Matilda Kon-Sarano in their original language, Judeo-Spanish (Ladino), and documented over 21 years. From 17 countries, including the United States, they come together in this first-ever collection of Joha stories to appear in English.
Known in some places as Ladino, Judeo-Spanish is a living remnant of the Spanish spoken by the Spanish Jews at the end of the 15th century. Matilda Kon-Sarano, born to a Sephardic family, has devoted her life to the conservation and revitalization of this language, culture, and heritage.
Joha, according to Ladino tradition, is a popular folklore character, one who is conniving yet also beguiling. He plays many roles: He makes us laugh; liberates us from taboos; makes it possible to tell the whole, sometimes painful, truth in a humorous way; and helps us triumph over our enemies through laughter.
These stories have entertained generations of Sephardic children and adults and will delight readers of any age.
