Michel Foucault, Jean-Paul Sartre, Julia Kristeva, Phillipe Sollers, and Jean-Luc Godard. During the 1960s, a who's who of French thinkers, writers, and artists, spurred by China's Cultural ...Revolution, were seized with a fascination for Maoism. Combining a merciless expos of left-wing political folly and cross-cultural misunderstanding with a spirited defense of the 1960s, The Wind from the East tells the colorful story of this legendary period in France. Richard Wolin shows how French students and intellectuals, inspired by their perceptions of the Cultural Revolution, and motivated by utopian hopes, incited grassroots social movements and reinvigorated French civic and cultural life.

In Portugal, after the liberal victory in 1834, many intellectuals of humble extraction proceed along a successful life course that pushes them often on important functions and makes them win a considerable reputation. Using a corpus of life stories of the concerned intellectuals, this article examines how certain factors contribute to their promotion, namely their initial experiences and learnings, as well as their later political interventions to change Portugal and to assure the position of the intelligentsia to which they belong. The final synthesis puts forward a set of constants as a contribution to explain this process of rising mobility in cases of low social origins.
The article examines the views of the Russian philosopher S. N. Bulgakov on the role of the intelligentsia in the revolution of 1905–1907. He draws attention to his understanding of the worldview of ...the political activity of the intelligentsia, as which he sees its “self-disposition.” It is shown that the natural support of the intelligentsia in the revolution, according to S. N. Bulgakov, is youth, due to emotional immaturity and a low level of education. The special importance of contrasting the “heroism” of the intelligentsia with the spirit of ascension, characteristic of Christian saints and involving intense everyday work, based on humility as the most important worldview prerequisite for ascension, is emphasized. It is noted that with the obvious similarity in the activities of modern opposition to the revolutionary impulse of the intelligentsia of the early twentieth century, there are also fundamental differences. They are related to mismatch of target settings. If the Russian intelligentsia of the beginning of the century aimed at a fundamental change in the social system, then the modern creative class is driven by the desire to destroy the existing power, due to the quite practical interests of personal success.
In the context of the socio-economic approach to determining the place and role of the intelligentsia and its interaction with authorities, often only one point is reviewed, in which the ...intelligentsia is defined as the most progressive layer of society and at the same time oppressed by the authorities for progressive views. Thus, a search is needed between the desire of society for progress and the search for optimal conditions for coexistence between power and the intelligentsia. The novelty of the work is determined by the fact that the historical basis of the interaction between government and the intelligentsia should be considered not only in a historical perspective but also on the basis of an economic or anthropological approach. The authors of the article determine the role economic nature of the intelligentsia in the positive development of a socio-economic nature in society. The practical significance of the study is determined by the possibility of forming social development programs on the basis of philosophical discussions and determining the place and role of the intelligentsia in social development.

This paper investigates the ways in which the nationalist narrative of the statist archaeology in Iran has contributed to the dominant nationalist discourse in systematic attempts to erase any ...evidence of the existence of a “non-Aryan” past in the Iranian plateau. Sponsored by the state, ethnoracial archaeological studies in Iran have functioned as a powerful instrument for constructing a desired past, one that is informed by Persianist primordial nationalism. To justify the state’s concurrent homogenization policies, Iranian archaeology has ascribed a sole historical agency to the Persian ethnie. Iranian archaeological studies have been employed by the Persianist intelligentsia and the state for propagating the idea of the singularity of “the nation”—one in which nonsovereign communities have no history, identity, or culture. Building on emergent decolonized literature on archaeology, this paper aims to interrogate some of the fundamental premises of nationalist archaeological studies in Iran.
