OBJECTIVES:The aim of this study was to examine outcomes from 10 years of research on a post-baccalaureate new graduate nurse residency program and to report lessons learned.
BACKGROUND:Transition to ...practice programs are recommended by the Future of Nursing report, the Carnegie Foundation study, the Joint Commission, and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
METHODS:Data from new graduate residents who participated in the University HealthSystem Consortium/American Association of Colleges of Nursing residency from 2002 through 2012 are presented. Analysis of variance results from the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Scale and outcomes from the graduate nurse program evaluation instrument are provided.
RESULTS:Retention rates for new graduates in the residency increased considerably in the participating hospitals. Residents’ perception of their ability to organize and prioritize their work, communicate, and provide clinical leadership showed statistically significant increases over the 1-year program.
CONCLUSION:The recommendations for new graduate nurse residency programs are supported by the findings.

Objetivo: realizar a autoavaliação dos Programas de Residência em Saúde Cardiovascular sob a ótica dos residentes em curso. Método: estudo observacional, transversal desenvolvido em hospital público ...cardiológico de São Paulo, cuja coleta foi realizada, após aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, por questionário junto aos residentes em curso, no segundo semestre de 2021. Resultados: residentes com idade média de 25,7 anos, mulheres, brancas, procedentes de São Paulo e região nordeste avaliaram sua satisfação relacionada às dimensões de Infraestrutura (74%), Organização didático-pedagógica (91,1%), Produção científica (92%) e Satisfação com o programa (92,4%). Verificou-se como ponto de melhoria a necessidade de investimentos em locais de repouso (79.5%), de convívio (70,5%), de estudo (15,9%), e em ações de educação permanente (27,3%) aos preceptores. Conclusão: o estudo possibilitou identificar prioridade de investimentos em infraestrutura e a necessidade de fortalecer a capacitação pedagógica dos preceptores fomentando o aprimoramento dos programas.

OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an evidence-based practice (EBP) learning module within a nursing residency program (NRP).
BACKGROUND:Utilization of EBP has been ...shown to improve patient outcomes; however, new-graduate nurses lack the practice application ability, attitudes, knowledge, and skills to incorporate EBP into their personal practice.
METHODS:New-graduate nurses in a hospital NRP participated in this nonexperimental, descriptive, correlational, study. The Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire was utilized in a prestudy-poststudy format to collect data for analysis.
RESULTS:Statistically significant changes occurred throughout the EBP module in regard to new-graduate nurse practice and knowledge of EBP.
CONCLUSION:Enabling novice nurses to foster a spirit of inquiry through EBP literacy is essential to patient outcomes; nonetheless, new-graduate nurse readiness must be further assessed in order to determine appropriate timing of EBP education within NRPs in an effort to improve the application of evidence at the bedside.

Our aim was to determine current admission criteria and practices used by Dietetic Internships (DIs) across the United States.
This was a cross-sectional study using electronic survey with open and close-ended items conducted in the fall of 2020.
The electronic survey was distributed to 261 DI directors.
Statistical analysis performed Descriptive statistics were calculated for each variable using SPSS software. Six topically related open-ended items were analyzed through a qualitative thematic approach.
DI directors (n = 89) were primarily female (n = 76) and White (n = 77). Most admissions process and criteria decisions were made by committees. Directors (n = 79) reported using a predefined rubric/scoring system for candidate evaluation. Many (n = 60) indicated not using Graduate Record Examination scores. All reported considering Didactic Program in Dietetics’ grade point average; personal statement quality; professional interests and goals; and type and quantity of previous dietetics-related work and volunteer experience. The admission factors rated (on a 7-point scale) most important were quality of interview (mean = 6.03), Didactic Program in Dietetics’ grade point average (mean = 5.67), type of work and volunteer experience (mean = 5.62), quality of personal statement (mean = 5.5), recommender comments (mean = 5.41), and quantity of work and volunteer experience (mean = 5.40). Most (n = 80) indicated that they were satisfied with their selection processes.
Educators should continue refining admissions processes as professional gatekeepers, consider reducing application fees, diversifying and training selection committees, re-evaluating admission criteria, and assessing how criteria weights.
