Substrate properties, such as grain size, water content, shear strength, and content of organic mucus, influence the life activity of benthic organisms and their trace-fossil record. This study deals ...with actualistic experiments using small crustaceans (amphipods and isopods) moving mainly over plaster of Paris surfaces in various stages of hardening. Several consistencies, such as semi-fluid, very soft, soft, soft-stiff, stiff, and very stiff are distinguished. The morphology of surface lebensspuren shows a broad variety that directly depends on stiffness of the substrate and the capability of the organisms to cope with it. Semi-fluid substrates hinder the organisms in their motility— they move by plowing, whereby sediment flows back behind the animal and refills the furrow, leaving an indistinct line on the surface. With increasing stiffness, traces acquire additional morphological details such as levees and median furrows. On stiff and very stiff substrates, the crustaceans do not penetrate into the sediment, but move by jumping, with the consequence of producing jumping traces instead of furrows. Some lebensspuren obtained in the experiments, especially furrows, are similar to some trace fossils attributed to several non-arthropod animal groups such as annelids, bivalves, and gastropods. This study helps clarify the interpretation and taxonomy of trace fossils and in reconstruct of substrate properties during their formation.

Görz (heute Gorizia) am Isonzo wurde von der k. u. k. 5. Armee als Brückenkopf ausgebaut und war schwer umkämpftes Ziel italienischer Offensiven. Die Stadt Görz wurde wie Triest als symbolträchtig gewertet. Sie schien zunächst wesentlich wichtiger zu sein als Geschehnisse an der russischen Front oder der Kriegseintritt Rumäniens. Zwischen Juni 1915 und September 1917 wurden am Isonzo elf materialintensive und blutige Abnützungsschlachten geschlagen. Anfang August 1916 fiel Görz zu Beginn der 6. Isonzoschlacht an die Italiener, die in den Folgeschlachten aber kaum Geländegewinne erreichten. Im September 1917, während der elften Schlacht, schien sich das Blatt für die Italiener zu wenden. Daraufhin massierten die Mittelmächte Truppen und Waffen in dreifacher Übermacht. Bislang an dieser Front nicht eingesetzte Waffen, darunter Giftgas (die Italiener besaßen noch keine Gasmasken), brachte einer italienischen Armee nach der anderen die Katastrophe. Während dieser zwölften und letzten Isonzoschlacht, ab Ende Oktober 1917, verloren die Italiener ein Vielfaches sämtlicher Geländegewinne der letzten dreieinhalb Kriegsjahre, 10.000 ihrer Soldaten kamen um, 30.000 wurden verwundet, 294.000 Mann waren in Gefangenschaft geraten, Hunderttausende desertierten. Ein militärischer Erfolg, der für die Monarchie, angesichts der Masse der zu versorgenden Kriegsgefangenen, ein Pyrrhussieg war.
Der Film DAS ZERSTÖRTE GÖRZ wird am Vorabend der 5. Isonzoschlacht, am 10. März 1916 uraufgeführt. Die Kamera durchmisst einzelne Straßenzüge, bilanziert die Form der Schäden und zieht sich auf einen Hügel zurück. Er bekommt eine strategische Funktion. Er gibt den Blick frei auf Bergkuppen, die Zentrum erfolgreicher Nachtangriffe waren. Und er eröffnet einen symbolischen Horizont. Bei klarem Wetter "sieht man von hier aus unsere ganze ruhmreiche Isonzofront".
The book ('From the Invisible Side of the Sky') talks about the Old Faith religion (Non-Christian faith), Old Faith people as well as about the Old Faith as a way of life which was known to our ...ancestors, before they were Christianized. However, it does not describe something that was alive just a thousand years ago, but it attests life in the 19th and 20th century, here, among us. Pavel Medvešček, half a century ago, managed to win the trust of the Old Faith people in the Soča valley (western Slovenia). He was accepted as their “confessor” and speaker. In doing so, they were led by an awareness that they are the last of their kind and have a unique opportunity to tell the world who they are and how they live in a way that is dying out. In medieval and early modern writings there are descriptions of the Old Faith in Europe, but their authors were Christians, mostly even Christian priests. They were necessarily deficient informed, their story biased, pejorative, mocking, their image of the Old Faith inevitably completely distorted. Through Medvešček as a writer, in the book the Old Faith people themselves talk about themselves. This did not succeed ever before and elsewhere, because they constantly have to hide and to pretend. It is this 'inner voice' which gives the book an incomparable, unique value of utmost importance, especially in an increasingly wilder, globalized world.
U ovom kraćem izlaganju želi se usmjeriti pozornost na promjene nastale na Krku tijekom i poslije Prvoga svjetskog rata. Na samom početku rata provedena je opća mobilizacija. Stotine mladića i mlađih ...muževa upućeno je na Istočnu bojišnicu u Galiciju i Bukovinu, a u sljedećim godinama, kad se otvorilo novo bojište oko rijeke Soče, mnogi su odlazili tamo. U posljednjoj ratnoj godini, kad su utihnule borbe na Istočnoj bojišnici, novo je odredište postao Solun, gdje su se mnogi našli u dobrovoljačkim redovima. U ratnim je operacijama na bojišnicama sudjelovalo barem tisuću Krčana, više od stotinu vojnika je poginulo, a barem dvostruko ih je ostalo s trajnim invaliditetom. Završetak rata označio je raspad Austro-Ugarske, prekrajanje granica. Iako je na Krku odmah osnovan Narodni odbor Slovenaca, Hrvata i Srba (SHS), talijanske su vlasti, na temelju tajnog Londonskog ugovora, okupirale otok, zauzele općinske i mjesne urede, provodile svakojaka nasilja. Talijanska okupacija potrajala je od 1918. do 1921. godine. Vrhunac okupacijske strahovlade na Krku predstavljalo je divljanje D’Annunzijevih ardita posljednjih mjeseci talijanske uprave. Krčki biskup Antun Mahnić je interniran, a s njime i više utjecajnijih svećenika. Rapalskim ugovorom prestala je okupacija Krka, a susjedni otoci Cres i Lošinj, s okolnim manjim otocima, istrgnuti su iz matične zemlje i pripojeni Kraljevini Italiji. Krčani su se našli u zajedništvu Države Slovenaca Hrvata i Srba te nastavili život u novim prilikama.
This paper is dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of the First World War and the members from Lika of the 79th Infantry Regiment Joint Forces from Otočac (K.u.K. Otočaner Infaterie regiment Graf ...Jellačić Nr. 79., abbreviated: IR 79), known as the "Jelačićevci". In it is described their participation in the 11th Isonzo Battle, one of the most horrific battles of the war. At the same time it is a memorial to the many victims of the regiment in this terrible war. Before leaving for the Isonzo battlefield the "Jelačićevci" led bloody battles in Serbia in 1914, in the Carpathian Mountains in the winter and spring of 1915, Galicia and Volhynia (today’s Ukraine and Poland) until the summer of 1916. After the disastrous defeat of the Austro-Hungarian and German forces by the Russians on the Eastern Front in the famous "Brusilov Offensive" in the summer of 1916, there came a regrouping of the broken Austro-Hungarian and German forces, the stabilisation of the battlefield and a partial sending of surplus forces to the other front. So the 1st and 2nd battalions of the 79th regiment entered into the structure of the 11th mountain brigade/48th infantry division from Sarajevo which arrived here from the Italian – southwest front – in the system of emergency forces. At that time they were located in the surroundings of the town of Sokal in the then province of Volhynia. With the return of the 48th division to Soča the "Jelačićevci" would also arrive. The 3rd Regiment would arrive first, and would participate in the Eighth Isonzo Battle in October 1916. The rest of the regiment would arrive during the late autumn and winter of 1916-17 and participate in all the subsequent battles right up until the victorious Twelfth in which the Italian forces were pushed back to the River Piave. Based on the available literature and archival material from the holdings of the Austrian State Archives – Österreichisches Staatsarchiv (ÖeStA) – Kriegsarchiv (KA) and the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb (HDA), primarily from preserved operational documentation, battle reports, lists of losses, death registers and other available documentation, the author examines the flow of the 11th Isonzo Battle, and in particular the military activity of the "Jelačićevci". All the horrors and heavy casualties of this battle of both warring parties are presented. The military terminology is adapted to present official Croatian terminology, and there where it was not possible the comparative Croatian and Austrian terms are given, especially for military ranks and formations.
Two field investigations, under low river flow regime, were conducted in the Isonzo River mouth, Gulf of Trieste, to examine effluent dynamics and suspended sediment characteristics through the water ...column. The well-marked stratification influences particle size distribution. Multivariate statistical analysis was successfully utilized to define the characteristics and mutual relationships of the water masses in the estuarine zone. The results allow the Isonzo River mouth to be identified as a microtidal, low-energy, fine-grained deltaic system. The highly stratified water column and related hypopycnal flux prevail in the dynamic regime within the lower reach of the distributary mouth. This type of circulation is interrupted during extreme river floods, when the salt-wedge is pushed out of the river mouth.
. In the framework of the Interreg II Project (July 1998 ‐ June 2001), hydro‐logical, chemical and biological data were collected in the Gulf of Trieste.
During spring and summer 2000, some ...particular thermohaline anomalies were observed in the Gulf of Trieste. Especially in May and June the water body showed: a very strong thermohaline stratification, an increase of advective salt water coming from the south and the presence of sharp pycnoclines. In July the temperature was higher than usual in the whole water column. Moreover, in late May and in June, massive mucilaginous aggregates were observed along the water column and at the surface.
In order to highlight these particular thermohaline features the hydrological data of 16 stations were analysed (Fig. 1). Two stations, in particular, were considered: one offshore (St. AA1, average depth 20 m) and one close to the coast (St. C1, average depth 17 m). For these two stations a best‐fit analysis, computed over 11 and 7 years, respectively, was performed on temperature, salinity and density excess data.
Moreover, the hydrological features were compared with the rainfall, air temperature, wind speed data (Istituto Sperimentale Talassografico di Trieste ‐ ISTT) and the Isonzo River's flow rate (Direzione Regionale dell'Ambiente ‐ Regione F. V. G.) collected from January 1998 to December 2000.
