Jerusalem is one of the most contested urban spaces in the world. It is a multiculturalcity, but one that is unlike other multiethnic cities such as London,Toronto, Paris, or New York. This book ...brings together scholars from acrossthe social sciences and the humanities to consider how different disciplinarytheories and methods contribute to the study of conflict and cooperation inmodern Jerusalem. Several essays in the book center on political decisionmaking;others focus on local and social issues. While Jerusalem's centralityto the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is explored, the chapters also cover issuesthat are unevenly explored in recent studies of the city. These include Jerusalem'sdiverse communities of secular and orthodox Jewry and ChristianPalestinians; religious and political tourism and the "heritage managers" ofJerusalem; the Israeli and Palestinian LGBT community and its experiencesin Jerusalem; and visual and textual perspectives on Jerusalem, particularlyin architecture and poetry. Adelman and Elman argue that Jerusalem is notsolely a place of contention and violence, and that it should be seen as aphysical and demographic reality that must function for all its communities.

Challenging the received wisdom, this candid portrait of three cities reveals a history of co-existence between Arab and Jews. Focusing on Jerusalem, Jaffa and Hebron, Klein looks at how Jewish, ...Muslim and Christian neighbous have coexisted from the 19th century to the present day.
The holy sites in Jerusalem exist as objects of international veneration and sites of nationalist contest. They stand at the heart of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, yet surprisingly, the many ...efforts to promote peace, mostly by those outside the Middle East, have ignored the problem. This 2006 book seeks to address this omission by focusing upon proposals of development of a legal regime to protect the holy sites separable from the final peace negotiations to not only protect the holy sites but promote peace by removing these particularly volatile icons from the field of conflict. Peace and the protection of the holy sites cannot occur without the consent and co-operation of those on the ground. This book supports local involvement by developing a comprehensive plan for how to negotiate: outlining the relevant history, highlighting issues of import, and identifying effective strategies for promoting negotiation.
The second Jewish revolt against the Romans has significantly influenced the shaping of subsequent Jewish messianic and eschatological thought. Largely due to the Revolt, mainstream Judaism has adopted a passive messianic attitude, and Jewish ambitions to reestablish statehood in Palestine has almost entirely subsided. Historical experience of the Bar–Kokhba revolt combined with the Jewish perception of history, as relevant to theological epistemology, has produced faith–based political quietism which marked Judaism for centuries. The attitude of religious Jews to political Zionism, when it first appeared, was very averse and remained such until rather recently. Change in the attitude was prompted by the same reason, which is historical
experience of the establishment and defense of the State of Israel.
Jerusalem's formal political borders reveal neither the dynamics of power in the city nor the underlying factors that make an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians so difficult. The lines ...delineating Israeli authority are frequently different from those delineating segregated housing or areas of uneven service provision or parallel national electoral districts of competing educational jurisdictions. In particular, the city's large number of holy sites and restricted religious compounds create enclaves that continually threaten to undermine the Israeli state's authority and control over the city. This lack of congruity between political control and the actual spatial organization and everyday use of the city leaves many areas of occupied East Jerusalem in a kind of twilight zone where citizenship, property rights, and the enforcement of the rule of law are ambiguously applied.
Michael Dumper plots a history of Jerusalem that examines this intersecting and multileveled matrix and in so doing is able to portray the constraints on Israeli control over the city and the resilience of Palestinian enclaves after forty-five years of Israeli occupation. Adding to this complex mix is the role of numerous external influences -- religious, political, financial, and cultural -- so that the city is also a crucible for broader contestation. While the Palestinians may not return to their previous preeminence in the city, neither will Israel be able to assert a total and irreversible dominance. His conclusion is that the city will not only have to be shared, but that the sharing will be based upon these many borders and the interplay between history, geography, and religion.
