The reception of Vatican I has changed unexpectedly in the fifty years between the centennial and the sesquicentennial. The ultramontane papacy created by Vatican I, seen as blocking renewal after ...Vatican II, has developed over fifty years into the condition making a global church possible. This historiographical sketch of Vatican I’s reception organizes these surprising developments around three pivotal works: Hans Küng’s Infallible? An Inquiry, Jean-Marie Roger Tillard’s The Bishop of Rome, and Émile Perreau-Saussine’s Catholicism and Democracy.
An abstract of study examining the concept of karma-yoga (the yoga of action) as the ideal moral action in the philosophical-religious work called Bhagavad-gita (the Song of the Supreme Lord) is ...presented. In this study, Lara notes that the karma-yoga is regarded as the ideal moral because it is universal, designed to all human beings in the transience of life, in the time, in this world, as well as for being open to each and every culture. In order to establish a dialogue and possible parallel with the perspective of the Hindu canon, he introduces the Christian and theologian macro-ecumenical Hans Kung, along with his theory of "inter-religious criteriology" or his commitment in establishing parameters in the ecumenical dimension and inter-religious dialogue.
This study discusses the response of some Muslim thinkers on 'Global Ethics' of Hans Küng. This 'Global Ethics' is a discussion on human rights within the sphere of theology, politics and global ...economy as well. The research problem shows that the acts of violation on human rights among Muslim communities are more serious concern, and the efforts to settle them down are still failure. This Global Ethics was introduced by Hans Küng and was designed purposely to deal with such conflicts, but from an Islamic perspective, the idea has caused a various reaction because it has been founded by a Western Christian person. Hence, the purpose of this study is to evaluate this idea from the Islamic perspective through the analysis of the responses of Muslim thinkers. To achieve this goal, the qualitative research method has been used via the process of gathering, studying, analysing and synthesising the data which directly related to the idea of 'Global Ethics' according to Hans Küng and Muslim thinkers. The result of the research shows that there are three types of responses of Muslim scholars, firstly, the absolute rejection due to prejudice against other religions and absolutism in religion (exclusivisme), secondly, the absolute acceptance based on equality in diversity (religious pluralism); and thirdly, a conditional acceptance due to the existing of usefulness value to Islam and this debate focusing on more human rights framework rather than theology (inclusivisme). This study is able to contribute a clear understanding of the needs 'Global Ethics' and further to urge the world community in general and Muslims in particular to assess openly a new idea without the action of rejection too early. Renegade Swiss Catholic theologian Hans Küng (1928–) is best known as a staunch critic of Vatican politics and as the founder of theWeltethosor Global Ethic Project, an interreligious dialogue ...initiative embraced by the United Nations and spiritual leaders from around the world. Following the achievement of a consensus on core human values at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1993—enshrined in theDeclaration Toward a Global Ethic (Erklärung zum Weltethos) signed by representatives of the world’s major and minor faiths—Küng’s Global Ethic Project has engaged more vigorously in recent years with the non-religious world in general and, since the moral disasters of the 2008 global financial crisis, with the business community in particular, in the hope of achieving, sooner rather than later, Weltethosa similar “overlapping consensus” on the contours of a Global Economic Ethic. The Weltethosbusiness world, however, represents a uniquely tough audience for Küng’sWeltethosWeltethosinitiative. In this paper, we focus on Küng’s core message and its extension into the Weltethosrealm of business: the idea of Basic Trust in reality (Grundvertrauen) as the precondition Weltethosfor ethical behaviour and human fulfilment. While profit is by no means the Weltethosenemy of business, Küng and otherWeltethospioneers show us that profit is a necessary Weltethosbut insufficient condition of any successful commercial enterprise. All businesses Weltethosneed an ethos which both transcends and constrains the profit motive, Weltethospointing to a higher, more avowedly social and even potentially numinousraison Weltethosd’êtrefor the firm than the simple bottom line.
