The purpose of this volume is to shape conceptual tools to understand the impact of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) on the organization of universities. Traditional ...research-based universities, the most typical representatives of the higher education system, find themselves challenged by the speed and the wide range of technical innovations, but also by a vast array of implicit assumptions and explicit promises associated with the distribution of digital media. The author observes that as universities increasingly use digital media (computers and the Internet) to accomplish their tasks, a transformation takes place in an evolutionary rather than in a revolutionary way. Using the University of Klagenfurt as an in-depth case study, he explores such dynamic issues as how digital media affect the practice of research, the preservation and dissemination of knowledge (for example, through publishing and archiving), and delivery of education at universities. More broadly, he considers issues of organizational culture and design, administration, and leadership as universities integrate digital technologies into all aspects of their operations.
The paper addresses one question: What makes the Cross-Border Studies (CBS) MA a multilingual study program? The first part presents the CBS MA curriculum, developed on the basis of current research ...literature on multilingualism and transcultural learning. The multilingual essence of the trans-and interdisciplinary CBS MA program is visible among others in the German-and English-language tracks. Besides these languages of instruction, the MA program encompasses at least two target languages, one of which is mandatorily Slavic (BCMS, Russian or Slovene). The intended objective of the CBS MA is to educate future experts who will actively operate between languages and cultures. Therefore, the program’s focus is not on acquiring language skills only, but also skills in the intercultural, i.e., interpersonal, sociolinguistic, and social areas. These are covered in the inter-and transdisciplinary compulsory and guided electives (Gebundene Wahlfächer). In the second part of the paper, the CBS MA is discussed in the context of multilingual and multicultural universities. We argue that it is possible to introduce English as a language of instruction and keep a multilingual setting, which includes preserving the local languages. Numerous strategies used within the program both in and outside the classroom to reinforce multilingualism and language diversity are presented.
By using the explorative research approach of semi-structured interviews, indicators that influence students' language acquisition in a multilingual environment could be determined. Moreover, ways of ...second language teaching implementation in different organizational forms of the minority school system in Carinthia/Koroška are presented. In this article, scientific methods and instruments will be presented as well as the respective content and the target group. An analysis of the linguistic socialization in mono-and multilingual families is explored, as well as partial fields of emotional connectedness to a specific language. Furthermore, dimensions of motivation to learn more languages will be addressed. Connections between the above-mentioned categories will be identified and interpreted.
In recent decades, the field of urban studies has neglected the question of the hinterland: the city's complex, changing relations to the diverse noncity landscapes that support urban life. Neil ...Brenner and Nikos Katsikis of the Urban Theory Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Design argue that this ‘hinterland question’ remains essential, but must also be radically reimagined under contemporary conditions.
This study presents a detailed mineralogical and chemical characterization of a chromium contamination in alluvial deposits underlying a leather tannery in Austria. Drill cores revealed that the ...contamination is represented by a black layer that exhibits sharp boundaries with adjacent brown alluvial sediments. This black layer is located below the groundwater table and begins at the source of the contamination. The black layer thickens with increasing distance from the source and the depth of the upper boundary remains at the same level relative to the surface. Mineralogical and chemical investigations showed that the black layer contains reduced Cr phases, a Cr(III) hydroxide and a Cr(III)-Ca-containing hydrocalcite, which are present as discrete grains, in vein-like pore spaces and/or as a coating around mineral grains. Cr(VI) is nearly only present above the groundwater table. Our 2-D model predicts a longitudinal spread of the black layer of approximately 37 m downgradient from the source and a maximum transversal spread of approximately 10 m. This study shows that, if the source of the contamination is not eliminated, the plume will increase continuously farther downgradient.

•A striking black layer contains Cr(III) hydroxide and Cr(III)-Ca-hydrocalcite.•Hexavalent chromium is found in alluvial sediments above the black layer.•The shape of the Cr(tot) plume reveals the source of the contamination: a soakaway.•A certain depth and associated reducing strength is needed to develop the black layer.•A 2-D model predicts lateral extents of ∼37 m (longitudinal) and ∼10 m (transversal) of the black layer.
