Among the Dutch and Flemish works of art now in private collections in or around Capetown is a painting of The Adoration of the Magi by Jan Swart (wood, 38¾" × 53", Fig. 1), belonging to Mrs. A. de ...Clercq-van Lanschot of Newlands. A number of the personages in this painting seem to have been given the facial features of historical figures: the kneeling king resembles Maximilian I (cf Fig. 8) ; the king with the long beard, Frederick II, the Wise (cf. Fig. 9) ; the man to the left of him, Philip of Burgundy, Bishop of Utrecht (cf. Fig. 13) ; the young man to the right of the Virgin, Charles V (cf. Fig. 10) ; the man in armour to the right of the man in the tall hat, Floris of Egmond (cf. Fig. 11) ; the man to the right of him, Adolph of Burgundy (cf. Fig. 15) ; between Floris and Adolph, Guillaume de Croy (cf. Fig. 12) ; and the man to the left of the Moorish king's hat, Edzard, Count of East Frisia (cf. Fig. 14). All these people were 'in the news' during the years 1516 and 1517. In 1516 Charles V became King of Spain and Adolph of Burgundy was made Admiral of the Fleet of the Low Countries, and the following year both of them went to Spain, accompanied by Guillaume de Croy who had been appointed Charles's Chief Councillor in 1515. In 1516 Frederick II was invested with the Order of the Golden Fleece in Brussels, and in 1517 Philip of Burgundy was made Bishop of Utrecht. Finally, it was in 1516 that Edzard, Count of East Frisia, and Floris of Egmond, who was already Stadtholder of Holland and Zeeland, met Maximilian and Charles in Brabant, on which occasion the office of Stadtholder of the districts round Groningen was conferred on Edzard. It is possible, therefore, that the painting may have been commissioned by one of the people portrayed and carried out in 1517 or 1518.
