This study offers a novel view of Conference Interpreting by looking at EU interpreters as a professional community of practice. In particular, Duflou's work focuses on the nature of the competence ...conference interpreters working for the European Parliament and the European Commission need to acquire in order to cope with their professional tasks. Making use of observation as a member of the community, in-depth interviews and institutional documents, she explores the link between the specificity of the EU setting and the knowledge and skills required. Her analysis of the learning experiences of newcomers in the professional community shows that EU interpreters' competence is to a large extent context-dependent and acquired through situated learning. In addition, it highlights the various factors which have an impact on this learning process. Using the way Dutch booth EU interpreters share the workload in the booth as a case, Duflou demonstrates the importance of mastering collaborative and embodied skills for EU interpreters. She thereby challenges the idea of interpreting competence from an individual, cognitive accomplishment and redefines it as the ability to apply the practical and setting-determined know-how required to function as a full member of the professional community.
This feminist monograph accommodates a selection of ethnographic voices pertaining to the adolescence and young adulthood of South Korean women. The work encompasses secret dimensions of female ...lives, carefully studying the realm of unexpected physical and social movements, events, bursts of energy, all entailing, to various degrees, what cultural studies and feminist theory usually think of as agency and resistance. Book tackles a notion of transgression (breaching, infringement), tries to locate and present the perceived specificities of South Korean female transgressions, and, finally, it discusses and re-affirms the position of ethnography in the intellectual projects of cultural studies after the affective turn.
This article deals with the implications of cultural anthropological interpretative epistemology and methodology for a biomedical model of treatment, comparing clinical practice with ethnographic ...fieldwork, and the doctor with the cultural anthropologist. It indicates the advantages of including the subjectivity of the patient and the patient’s personal stories regarding the experience of the illness in the healing process. This is achieved through focusing the biomedical practices on the patient, whereby in the conversation with the patient the doctor writes an "ethnography" or narrative of the illness. Finally, the article asks the question of whether bureaucratisation and the demand for an economy of time prevents the development of such practices.
As a result of opening of internal borders within the EU and rapid development of affordable navigation technology, there is a constantly increasing number of people in the Mediterranean who have ...adopted a lifestyle that revolves around living working and traveling on sailing boats. On the ground of ethnography among liveaboards in Greece the book discusses the following questions: How can we conceptualise these novel forms of movements that seem to sit uncomfortably in between the standard dichotomized division of work within migration studies and wider social sciences: internal/international migration, temporary/permanent, migration/tourism? How do we theoretically and methodologically situate these individuals that are statistically often invisible and seem to evade the common categories of describing a mobile person, such as migrant or tourist? In order to answer these questions, the author explores ethnographically the connection between the maritime environment, sea imaginaries and lifestyle migration. It puts forward six crew portraits in order to highlight details from individuals’ lives on a longer time perspective but also to place the individual stories, sea imaginaries and people’s experiences with the maritime environment in dialogue with each other. This makes it possible to better understand the expectations, aspirations and experiences of maritime lifestyle migrants and to discuss further the idea of temporarily unbelonging in practice.
Over the last decades, several different renewal movements within Christianity have had a strong impact on Melanesian societies and cultures. Even though these societies have shown a great desire for ...total transformation, they have in their transformative acts come across an insurmountable obstacle: a firm bond between their way of being and places, where their being has been realised. The Ambonwari people of the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea have faced the same problem since the Catholic charismatic movement reached the village in December 1994. Their cosmology and social organization have always been inseparable from their paths (journeys of ancestors, marriages, exchanges, adoptions) and places (old and new villages, fishing and hunting places, taboo places), and their historicity was primarily perceived and defined in terms of individual and group relations to particular named locations in tropical rainforest. As times are tightly intertwined with places, temporalities in the landscape are also possessed, seen and held by individuals and groups. The book ('Places and Times in a New Guinean Landscape') argues that it is this multiplicity of emplaced and embodied temporalities that troubles them most in their ongoing attempts to modify their life-world.
What makes chatty objects chatty? There are probably many reasons. But in this book ('Chatty Objects. When Objects Talk About Us and Others') you will hear only one answer to this question: changed ...context! When objects find themselves in new, different, foreign contexts, they often, but not always, start chatting. Thus in this book we hear the chatting of the scarves of Muslim immigrant women and their descendants in Slovenia~bureks and pies baked in the kitchens of immigrants and given as gifts to Slovenes, the Tuareg 'veil' called a taglmust in the towns of north Africa~“white” dishes at Muslim wedding festivals in urban Burkina Faso~the bronze ritual vessel called a ding in China’s long history, and consumer goods purchased on holidays in a Tokyo shopping street.
Opća je značajka suvremenih antropologijskih i etnologijskih istraživanja zanemarivanje teorijskoga i metodologijskog značenja i
uloge filozofijske antropologije i njezine tradicije.
sretnom i produktivnom sintezom teorije (s nužnim prihvaćanjem
filozofijskoantropologijskog motrišta) i iskustva (ernpirijskog istraživanja).
This text is a review of Nikola Skledar’s book Philosophy and Life, but it also represents an
attempt to critically outline the author’s theoretical and intelectual profile taking into account
his ...other books. The main objective of the text is to present developed and original open anthropology which has existential, hermeneutical and humanist character in interpretation of
the man’s historic subsistence. The text examines principal themes like: the relation between
the philosophy and contemporary life, modern education/schooling and the philosophy of man,
integral bio-ethics, philosophy towards religion and science, eros and thanatos, about the life
after death, philosophical foundations of science, from the work of our philosophers, etc.
