The research of the toponymy of Liburnia has so far been sporadic and unsystematic. It mostly included short overviews of part of the toponymy or about comments on individual (groups of) toponyms from the areas of Brseština, Mošćeniština, and Lovranština. In the past ten years, the systematic analysis of the contemporary toponymy of Lovran, including a part of its historical toponymy, has begun. So far, the toponymy of the cadastral municipality of Tuliševica, the coastal toponymy of Lovran, and the toponymy in wills from Lovran dated in the second half of the 18th century have been analysed. This paper will present the results of the research on toponymic material in the oldest Croatian legal monuments from the area of Liburnia, which has been partially and unsystematically included in previous research as well. It includes the material excerpted from the sources Kvaderna kapitula lovranskoga, Veprinački zakon (1507), Zakona kaštela Mošćenic (1637), and other private legal documents from the areas of Lovran, Veprinac, Mošćenice and Brseč dated between the beginning of the 15th and the end of the 17th century. The research contributes to the completion of the picture of the oldest historical toponymy from the area of Liburnia.
The Chair of the Čakavian Parliament in Lovran has been established with the clear goal of starting the systematic work on the valorization of the rich cultural and historical heritage of Lovran and ...its immediate surroundings, Lovranšćina (Lovran region). This paper provides an overview of the activities of the Chair in its first decade of work (2009-2019) by which this goal was achieved. The emphasis has been placed primarily on the scientific valorization of the mentioned heritage through two continuous activities: scientific conferences and the publication of the scientific journal Zbornik Lovranšćine, and the rich publishing production with which the Chair has become the leading publishing institution in the Liburnia area. The Chair’s work is evaluated through the confirmation of the thesis that the Chair has systematically, thoroughly, and continuously worked on valorizing the cultural and historical heritage of Lovran and Lovranšćina, successfully achieving its initial goals. Finally, we conclude that, with such work, the Chair has probably by far exceeded its founders’ initial expectations, becoming a model of scientific work of a civic association and generally a model of systematic publishing policy in several areas: from scientific over journalistic to literary, in which the Chair stands out on a regional and even a national level.
'Lovran Marron' is the only known traditional Croatian variety of the sweet chestnut. The objective of this study is to specify qualitative and quantitative morphological characteristics and to ...analyze the chemical composition of the 'Lovran Marron' fruits as well as to compare them to Marušnjak fruits (trees from the 'Lovran Marron' seed) and fruits from the local natural sweet chestnut population. Seven morphological characteristics were measured: fruit mass, height, width and thickness, scar length and width, and the length of the longest intrusion of the seed coat into the kernel. Eight qualitative characteristics were estimated: embryony, degree of penetration of the seed coat into the kernel, fruit shape, glossiness and colour, kernel colour, hairiness towards the top of the fruit and the existence of longitudinal stripes. 'Lovran Marron' has desirable qualitative and quantitative fruit characteristics. The Marušnjak trees mostly have intermediate morphological traits of fruits in comparison with 'Lovran Marron' and trees from the natural population. 'Lovran Marron' had the smallest mass fractions on average of: K, Mg, Ca, Na, Mn, Cu and Fe. The highest mass fractions on average of these macro- and microelements were characteristic of the trees from the natural population. The highest average content of carbohydrates was recorded in the 'Lovran Marron' and the lowest in the fruits from the natural population. The Marušnjak fruits had intermediate water, protein, ash, carbohydrates, and macro- and microelement content. The content of Cd and Pb was lower in all samples than the maximum allowed amounts in the sweet chestnut fruits.
Following the brief overview of the history of Lovran, during which he also presents several information from the church history which have been unknown thus far, the author writes about certain ...aspects of the life of the Catholic Church in that parish during the period of Italian administration. Lovran parish was a part of the Diocese of Trieste and Kopar when Austria-Hungary collapsed. In 1925 it became a part of the newly founded Diocese of Rijeka, together with the entire Liburnia area. The paper also mentions names of the pastorally active priests in Lovran between the two world wars, as well as other aspects of the religious life of that hitherto less-familiar period. The circumstances of religious life in the 1920s and 1930s have been placed in the context of national and linguistic issues related to Italianization conducted by the Kingdom of Italy in the area. The authorʼs analysis is mainly based on the archival records related to the bishops of Rijeka, i.e. their decisions and actions concerning Lovran parish
Documents from the Lovran Notary Office, which present a part of the Public Notaries in Rijeka and its surroundings collection, have been archived in the State Archives in Rijeka. They represent an ...extensive source of data for research into the history of Lovran, the Lovran surroundings and its neighbouring municipalities in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the same time, they also present very valuable linguistic resources. Previous research into the archival fund of the Lovran Notary Office from the second half of the 18th century has highlighted the great onymic wealth, which can primarily be found in testaments in Italian, as a stimulating source for different onomastic research. Since the anthroponymic material from 141 testaments written in Italian in the period from 1756 to 1796 has already been described, and since only a small part of the toponyms recorded in these testaments have been included in studies on the contemporary toponymy of Lovran and the Lovran surroundings, the focus of this research paper is on the entire toponymic corpus contained in 150 testaments written in Croatian and Italian from the same time period. The paper presents the complete list and description of extracted oikonyms and microtoponyms, while an extensive microtoponymic corpus is divided by a motivational criterion as well as structural and formational criteria, in order to ultimately create an as complete as possible picture of the toponymy of the Lovran surroundings in the second half of the 18th century.
Based on the available published and unpublished literature, this paper describes the Lovran’s harbor historical growth, construction activities and transformation, including period from the ...beginning of the tourist era of the place up until the beginning of the First World War. Political and social aspects refering to certain periods are mentioned throughout the paper for getting an insight on historical circumstances that influenced on the quality of life and economy of Lovran.
