The Maribor Synagogue is one of the most important preserved medieval synagogues in Central Europe. Since undergoing renovation and partial reconstruction from 1992–1999, the facility has served as a ...cultural centre. The renovation, which was supervised by the ZVKDS (Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia), proved to be much more demanding than was originally foreseen. While the outcome of the renovation has not been scrutinized in professional literature, its architectural shell and elements have served as a reference point for the (visual) reconstruction attempts of similar monuments abroad. However, the renovation itself has left numerous unanswered questions, especially in regard to the building phases during the Jewish and later Christian use of the building. The article examines the history of the monument’s documentation and preservation in the 20th century in light of recent progress in medieval synagogue research. Owing to the controversial interpretations of certain architectural elements and the failure to take archaeological research into account, the entire reconstruction is called into question.
The paper identifies the quality and integrity of residential environment RE in Slovenia that changed according to socio-economic circumstances when the new socialist society in the Yugoslav era (1945-1990) was formed and was substantially changed in the post-independence era of the liberal market society. The research of RE from different periods was conducted in the city of Maribor. The results indicate differences in quality in the period of the Scandinavian influence, engineering economy parameters after the housing reform, and of the market economy after independency.
Although hackathon is generally known and used event-format in the world of software engineering, it has in recent years also been used in other fields, as i.e. participatory urbanism, in US often ...referred to as civic hackathon. Hackathon in general is an event at which problems are solved in a limited time frame with intense participant collaboration. The focus of a hackathon is usually predefined; however creativity in problem solving is at the forefront of all activities. The paper will describe the specifics of urban hackathon, a derivative form of civic hackathon, which uses similar approach, harnessing the potential of information technologies and stakeholders involvement in the field of urban development and urban renewal. Despite vast amount of information and unprecedented potentials of existing technologies, they are not being used to full potential in the practise of urban development. At the same time, the importance of horizontal integration between different professions, inclusion of stakeholders, communities and researchers is increasingly becoming the central theme in managing the contemporary urban environment.
Through the analysis of existing literature and web sources the paper presents hackathons dealing with urban issues worldwide and their characteristics. Furthermore, thorough the case-study analysis of tools, processes and experiences of three urban hackathons held in Maribor/Slovenia in 2015 as a part of the Actors of urban change program (Living city project), the paper describes the impacts of this approach on public discourse and actions taken in solving the urban renewal problems in the city of Maribor.

Prispevek obravnava družino in mladost Antona Korošca, enega vodilnih slovenskih politikov pred drugo svetovno vojno. Imel je starejšega brata Jakoba in mlajšo sestro Marijo. The article presents an overview of the literature on Maribor’s music history from the thirteenth century to the present day and highlights the problem of the organised archive material of various ...institutions. An analysis of current achievements reveals gaps in our knowledge of the sections of Maribor’s music history discussed to date and suggests areas for further research.
For interactivity, the virtual world so often relies on a physical component, but how might virtual spaces be made more tangible as spatial environments for exchange? Under the direction of architect ...and RMIT University professor Tom Kovac, in 2012 the 100 Year City project rose to this challenge as part of the Maribor European Capital of Culture programme. Here, Guest‐Editor and Deputy Curator of the project, Fleur Watson, describes how this ‘super studio’ incites cross‐disciplinary exchange and the sharing of progressive design ideas for sustainable blueprints for our cities. It is an initiative that is to be continued under Kovac's directorship with the 100 Year City‐themed Malaysian Biennale in the summer of 2015.
