The Reason of the Giftreproduces the Richard Lectures presented at the University of Virginia by Marion (Univ. of Chicago Divinity School) in 2008. The collection of studies in this small book ...further refines Marion's signal contribution to contemporary phenomenology: his account of "givenness" as central to phenomenology.
This book could be profitably read as a phenomenological complement to Robyn Horner's Jean-Luc Marion: A Theo-logical Introduction (CH, Dec'05, 43-2143). As Mackinlay (Catholic Theological College) ...rightly notes, Marion's reception in North America has largely been through the portal of philosophical theology, whereas his work over the past two decades has focused on phenomenology proper (even if he still tends to privilege religious phenomena as studies).
Renowned as a Descartes specialist, Marion (Univ. of Paris-IVSorbonne and Univ. of Chicago) has likewise established himself as the leading phenomenologist of our time, and as a philosopher of ...religion who has played a major role in shaping the contours of Continental philosophy of religion. Precisely because of the ways in which he has rethought phenomenology, Marion's work opens up a phenomenological space for revelation and theological issues in general.

How does Jean-Luc Marion challenge our thinking and practice? One might answer that question by pointing to three themes running throughout Marion's thought-idolatry, the gift and love. These themes ...are so closely linked in Marion that it is impossible to discuss one without the others. Marion's reflections on them are distinct in how he combines phenomenological and theological concerns so that theology (or, more accurately, revelation) becomes primary.
