Dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, the Château des Aix was built on a square ground plan and flanked by four towers at the angles. It underwent major transformations in the early 17th century ...when it acquired its present U-shaped plan around a courtyard through the demolition of one of the curtain walls, the creation of an open terrace, and the establishment of the main building flanked by turrets at its angles. In the 18th century, the interior was ornately decorated, most notably with stucco mounted on lathwork. By 1897 the property had fallen into shambles and many of its walls and floors had been destroyed in the hunt for a hypothetical treasure. Acquired by the present owners in 1990, conservation works began in 1995.
The timber framework and roof of the main building have since been entirely repaired. Walls have been consolidated by incorporating reinforced concrete into the masonry. All of the exterior woodwork, the collapsed ceilings and floors, the curtain walls, the two access bridges and the northeast pavilion have been restored. Works continue to be pursued with the restoration of the moat, the terrace, a second pavilion, an outbuilding, the entry-gate, the covering of the whole building, the well and its dome in the exterior courtyard, and the interior decoration. Although considerable work remains to be completed, this typical monument of the Bourbonnais has been rescued from imminent danger for the enjoyment of several future generations to come.
Former Use: Fortified residence

The Atlantic Wall is one of the last major defence lines of this century. It was built by the German occupation forces in the period 1941-1944 along the coast of France, Channel Islands, Belgium, ...Netherlands, Germany, Denmark adn Norway. The infrastructure is of great value for many reasons - the architectural quality of its vast building system, the ability of these objects to define a new aesthetic canon for modernity, the relationship with their natural and or urban contexts which are essential elements for interpreting the cultural landscape. Its greatest value however resides in being the most widespread heritage of European culture preserving a collective memory of WWII. The study is the result of research carried out in the context of the Culture 2000 programme. Partners were the Politecnico di Milano, the Ecole d'Architecture de Versailles, adn the Raymond Lemaire Centre for Conservation in Leuven
Jury Citation: "For critical research and effective promotion of an important trans-national cultural heritage that has contributed to the preservation of the memory of our shared European history"
The Gallico Castle and the medieval burgh of Montecalvoli are situated in the Tuscany region - namely in Siena Province, in the Municipalities of Asciano and Trequanda - and are submitted to the ...Italian laws for the Monuments restoration, NR I089139. The existence of the little territory of Montecalvoli has been known since 1199 and it is documented that it was already politically subjected to Siena in 1203. Documents describe Montecalvoli as a little rural terrilory having autonomaus statutes and its own officers. Probably towards the end of XIV or the very beginning of XV, the Tolomei Family enlarged a Tower located in the "Piano Gallico" which they owned. lt might have been one of those Towers used to sight and signalling danger, as well as guaranteeing greater security. The restoration works were done under the Siena Monuments and Fine Arts Service control in the years 1990 - 2000.
