Der Text stellt die Utopie als damals neue politische Gattung, ihren Autor, Thomas Morus, als humanistisch gelehrten Staatsmann vor, skizziert den Gehalt von Morus‘Schrift, überlegt sich, wie ...ernsthaft die Vorschläge zu nehmen sind, und weist am Ende auf drei Defizite hin: den Mangel an Dynamik, an Freiheit und an Überlegungen zu einem Völkerrecht und zu einer internationalen politischen Ordnung. Im Anschluß an eine vorläufige Bilanz klärt er die Frage, ob politische Utopien heute noch zeitgemäß sind.
The text presents utopia as a new political genre, its author, Thomas More, as a humanistically learned statesman, outlines the content of Morus' writing, considers how serious the proposals should be taken, and indicates three shortcomings in the end: the lack of dynamism, of freedom and of reflection on international law and political order.After a preliminary assessment, it clarifies the question of whether political utopias are still relevant today.
Cet article exploratoire offre une réinterprétation de L’Utopie de Thomas More en y problématisant le rôle politique de l’écriture et de la parole. En prenant pour point de départ le concept de voie ...oblique offert par Abensour, il s’agira de souligner la prédominance de l’oralité dans cette stratégie littéraire. Pour ce faire, trois influences sous-estimées dans les analyses de L’Utopie seront dégagées : le problème de la logographie du Phèdre, l’emploi rhétorique d’une mise en abîme topologique dans le De Republica de Cicéron et les récits modernes sur « les peuples sans écriture » du Nouveau Monde. On pourra enfin saisir comment cette tension entre écriture et parole affecte le questionnement utopiste sur la chose politique. C’est qu’en se faisant parole, l’écriture de L’Utopie produit une stratégie discursive que l’on voit résonner chez d’autres auteurs du XVIe siècle (Machiavel, La Boétie) : elle offre une pensée heuristique sur le possible doublée d’une critique de l’ordre politique de son temps.

En el presente artículo atribuyo a Vasco de Quiroga una traducción castellana anónima de la Utopía de Tomás Moro que se conserva en un manuscrito único en la Real Biblioteca del Palacio Real de ...Madrid. En los folios finales de la Información en derecho (1535), Vasco indica que tradujo la Utopía pero, como su traslado no se encuentra actualmente junto al manuscrito que contiene la Información en derecho, custodiado en la Biblioteca Nacional de España, hasta ahora se había dado por perdido. La traducción de Utopía del Palacio Real, pese a ser la primera versión vernácula completa de la obra de Tomás Moro, ha pasado casi inadvertida por la crítica. Esta traducción fue escrita sin lugar a dudas en la época de Carlos V y, como voy a tratar de demostrar aquí, fue obra de Vasco de Quiroga, quien la habría enviado a Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco para que en el Consejo de Indias se entendiera mejor el funcionamiento de los pueblos de indios que Vasco había fundado en Santa Fe de México (1532) y Santa Fe de la Laguna (1533) inspirándose en la Utopía de Tomás Moro.
This article attributes to Vasco de Quiroga an anonymous Spanish translation of Thomas More’s Utopia, the sole copy of which is held by the Royal Library of Madrid. In the final pages of his Información en derecho (1535), Vasco mentions that he translated Utopia but, as it is not found alongside the manuscript that contains Información en derecho, held by the National Library of Spain, it has been considered lost until now. The translation of Utopia held by the Royal Library, despite being the first complete Spanish edition of this work, has been almost completely ignored by critics. There is no doubt that it was written in the time of Charles V and, as shall be shown herein, that it was the work of Vasco de Quiroga, who had sent it to Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco so that the Council of the Indies would better understand the functioning of the hospital-towns that he had founded in Santa Fe de México (1532) and Santa Fe de la Laguna (1533), which were inspired by Thomas More’s Utopia.
What does it mean to be a free citizen in times of war and tyranny? What kind of education is needed to be a 'first' or leading citizen in a strife-filled country? And what does it mean to be free ...when freedom is forcibly opposed? These concerns pervade Thomas More's earliest writings, writings mostly unknown, including his 280 poems, declamation on tyrannicide, coronation ode for Henry VIII and his life of Pico della Mirandola, all written before Richard III and Utopia. This book analyzes those writings, guided especially by these questions: Faced with generations of civil war, what did young More see as the causes of that strife? What did he see as possible solutions? Why did More spend fourteen years after law school learning Greek and immersed in classical studies? Why do his early works use vocabulary devised by Cicero at the end of the Roman Republic?
"Utopía" es una palabra inventada hace 500 años por Tomás Moro, quien acopló las palabras en griego para “no” y “lugar” para denotar la idea de un lugar imaginario o inexistente, y también aprovechó ...la homofonía con “eu-topía” (buen lugar) para sugerir este doble aspecto del concepto: en toda la literatura subsiguiente la idea de utopía se asocia con el empleo de lo imaginario o ficticio para proyectar un ideal. En el siglo XX se acuñó el término distopía para describir, por oposición a las utopías, sociedades igualmente ficticias o imaginarias, pero con características negativas o indeseables. Si la utopía es el sueño de un mundo mejor, la distopía es una visión del futuro como pesadilla.
Thomas More is a complex and controversial figure who has been regarded as both saint and persecutor, leading humanist and a representative of late medieval culture. His religious writings, with ...their stark and at times violent attacks on what More regarded as heresy, have been hotly debated. In Writing Faith and Telling Tales, Thomas Betteridge sets More's writings in a broad cultural and chronological context, compares them to important works of late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century vernacular theology, and makes a compelling argument for the revision of existing histories of Thomas More and his legacy. Betteridge focuses on four areas of More's writings: politics, philosophy, theology, and devotion. He examines More's History of King Richard III as a work of both history and political theory. He discusses Utopia and the ways in which its treatment of reason reflects More's Christian humanism. By exploring three of More's lesser known works, The Supplication of Souls, The Confutation, and The Apology, Betteridge demonstrates that More positioned his understanding of heresy within and against a long tradition of English anti- heretical writing, as represented in the works of Hoccleve, Lydgate, and Love. Finally, Betteridge focuses on two key concepts for understanding More's late devotional works: prayer and the book of Christ. In both cases, Betteridge claims, More seeks to develop a distinctive position that combines late medieval devotionalism with an Augustinian emphasis on the ethics of writing and reading. Writing Faith and Telling Tales poses important questions concerning periodization and confessionalization and will influence future work on the English Reformation and humanist writing in England.
The usual conception of the idea of Utopia is that of a social entity that, because of its own perfection, cannot exist in the real world. This conception is preeminent not only in modern and ...contemporary thinking, but also in the interpretations of More's Utopia: according such idea, in the utopian republic, the humanist creates a perfect state, but unreal, and because of that, he places it in the island named noplace. This interpretation forgets the auto-ironical elements in Utopia, whose presence in the work avoids reading it according the scheme ideal perfection-real imperfection. Este trabajo estudia la invocación del adagio Qui tacet, consentire videtur que hizo Tomás Moro para defenderse de uno de los cargos contenidos en el indictmen que lo llevó a juicio. Por el examen de ...las fuentes del proceso se puede inferir que la alegación tuvo lugar, aunque existen diferencias sobre el origen del adagio mencionado por Moro. Al indagar la historia de la máxima se observa que proviene del Derecho Canónico: fue consagrada en el Libro Sexto de las Decretales por Dino de Mugelano, quien generalizó algunos precedentes contenidos en el Digesto y la práctica eclesiástica. La regla pasaría luego al Derecho común medieval y al antiguo Derecho inglés. Por ello, las diferentes versiones del proceso pueden considerarse correctas aunque aludan a fuentes distintas del adagio. La invocación de Moro no fue sólo retórica sino jurídica en tres diferentes modos. El alegato basado en la máxima resultó efectivo: el cargo relativo al silencio no malicioso no fue mantenido por los acusadores.
