Coccidioidomycosis is associated with a broad spectrum of illness severity, ranging from asymptomatic or self-limited pulmonary infection to life-threatening manifestations of disseminated disease. Serologic studies before the widespread availability of antifungals established current understanding of serologic kinetics and dynamics. Chart histories and complement fixation (CF) titer trends were analyzed for 434 antifungal-treated coccidioidomycosis patients, who were classified by three infectious disease physicians as having either pulmonary uncomplicated coccidioidomycosis (PUC) (
n
= 248), pulmonary chronic coccidioidomycosis (PCC) (
n
= 64), disseminated coccidioidomycosis (DC) not including meningitis (
n
= 86), or coccidioidal meningitis (CM) (
n
= 36). The median maximal CF titers were 1:4 for PUC patients, 1:24 for PCC patients, 1:128 for DC patients, and 1:32 for CM patients. Approximately 25.4% of PUC patients, 6.2% of PCC patients, 2.3% of DC patients, and 8.3% of CM patients did not develop detectable titers during the study period. Maximal titers developed a mean of 31 days (95% confidence interval CI, 13 to 50 days) after initial serologic positivity, with no significant differences between groups. Serologic recurrence occurred in 9% of PUC patients, 36% of PCC patients, 50% of DC patients, and 52% of CM patients. Median titer improvement rates were 91 days/dilution for PUC patients, 112 days/dilution for PCC patients, 136 days/dilution for DC patients, and 146 days/dilution for CM patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that CF testing retains moderate classification value for disseminated infections (area under the curve AUC, 0.82 95% CI, 0.78 to 0.87) and complicated infections (AUC, 0.82 95% CI, 0.77 to 0.86). A suitable cutoff value for complicated infections is ≥1:32. Findings update serologic parameters that are relevant for clinical assessment of coccidioidomycosis patients in the triazole era.
RESUMEN Las leguminosas al crecer asociadas a otras especies son capaces de incrementar el va- lor nutritivo total de las no fijadoras de Nitrógeno (N) y aumentar su productividad. El objetivo fue ...evaluar la fijación biológica de N de Adesmia bicolor (Leguminosae) creciendo consociada con Festuca arundinacea (Gramineae) a lo largo de su ciclo de vida. El ensayo se realizó en la Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto. Se evaluaron cuatro tratamientos: A1:F0 (Control I: A. bicolor, cultivo puro), A1:F1 (A. bicolor y F. arundinacea en proporciones similares), A3:F1 (A. bicolor y F. arundinacea en pro- porciones 3 a 1) y A0:F1 (Control II: F. arundinacea, cultivo puro). Durante las fases de crecimiento se seleccionaron tres áreas de superficie de 0,25 m2 por tratamiento, se determinó producción de biomasa seca total, número de nódulos y contenido de N. En A. bicolor se observó una mayor producción de biomasa seca total en el cultivo puro A1:F0 con respecto a los consociados en todas las fases de crecimiento. En F. arundinacea se notó una mayor producción de biomasa seca total en el cultivo puro A0:F1 en etapa vegetativa y de fructificación, mientras que en etapa de floración fue mayor en los tratamientos consociados. El contenido de N en las dos especies fue más elevado en la parte aérea que subterránea. Los valores más altos de N se presentaron en el tratamiento A3:F1. En A. bicolor la mayor producción de nódulos fue, en todos los tratamientos, en etapa vegetativa. Se concluye que A. bicolor es efectiva para fijar N tanto en cultivo puro como consociada. Teniendo en cuenta los valores de biomasa de F. arundinacea y el contenido de N en ambas especies se observaron resultados prometedores en los tratamientos consociados, por lo cual se sugiere continuar con estudios que permitan comprender el comportamiento de esta asociación.
ABSTRACT Phytoplankton removal by ozone pretreatment was studied in a pilot plant that collects water from a subtropical reservoir in northwestern Argentina. The seasonal variation of abundances by ...algal groups at the inlet and outlet of the plant in the period 20192020, and the removal efficiency of the treatment were analyzed as a function of two size categories (MDL maximum linear dimension) and biovolume in selected species. At the inflow, algal abundance showed seasonal differences with predominance of diatoms in winter, Cryptophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Dinophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae in spring and Cyanobacteria in summer. Algae outflow was also higher in winter, with a predominance of diatoms, and of cyanobacteria in au tumn and summer. The treatment produced a significant reduction in algal density (mean 26.94%), which increased even more in some particular groups: Zygnemato phyceae (68.21%), Euglenophyceae (59.80%), Cyanobacteria (57.87%), Cryptophyceae (53.84%), Dinophyceae (38.59%) and Chlorophyceae (28.66%). A total of 326 spp were recorded in the monitoring, although only 126 spp had a frequency of occurrence in at least 10% of the samplings, mostly with low densities. Microalgae removal in the pilot plant showed no significant correlations with cell dimensions for selected species. Class III averages of MLD =31.62 ±8.79 μm and biovolume =4019.69 ±2711.49 μm3 had the highest removals per treatment (72.97% and 72.74%, respec tively), although they were not statistically different from the remaining classes. Conclusion: the algae removal capacity by the ozonation process of the pilot plant produced a significant reduction in algal density, especially of Cyanobacteria, Zygnematoficeae, Euglenophyceae and Cryptophyceae, which in all cases exceeded 50%.
Resumen El objetivo fue describir caracteres morfoanatómicos adaptativos a ambientes xéricos, de órganos vegetativos de tres especies de la familia Fabaceae: Crotalaria chaco-serranensis H. Bach & ...Fortunato, Desmodium incanum DC. y Rhynchosia edulis Griseb. provenientes de las Sierras Chicas de Córdoba. Se analizó la estructura anatómica de cinco ejemplares de cada especie, con preparados temporarios y se tomaron fotomicrografías. C. chaco-serranensis en raíz presentó abundantes amiloplastos. Tallo con una hipodermis colenquimática y esclerénquima con fibras gelatinosas sobre el floema. El folíolo fue hipostomático con tricomas unicelulares simples en la cara abaxial y mesofilo dorsiventral. D. incanum, evidenció una raíz con crecimiento secundario temprano. El tallo presentó epidermis con gruesa cutícula y abundantes tricomas. Se observó en la corteza estratos de colénquima laminar seguidos de casquetes de fibras gelatinosas y en la médula idioblastos fenólicos. El folíolo presentó epidermis con abundantes tricomas e idioblastos fenólicos en floema. R. edulis mostró raíces con estructura secundaria. Cercano al cuello de la raíz principal, se observó un xilopodio con médula parenquimática y amiloplastos. Se evidenciaron rizomas con amiloplastos e idioblastos fenólicos dispersos en el parénquima. El tallo presentó cutícula gruesa, tricomas, colénquima laminar y fibras floemáticas. Dispersos en el floema se detectaron compuestos fenólicos en idioblastos. Folíolos con numerosos tricomas y entre el parénquima en empalizada y esponjoso se evidenció un estrato continuo de idioblastos fenólicos, al igual que en el floema pero dispersos. Se concluye que las especies analizadas presentan caracteres morfológicos que le permiten adaptarse a condiciones ambientales xéricas. Estos resultados sirven de base para futuros estudios de restauración y conservación de especies autóctonas en ambientes perturbados.

This review highlights the importance of olive trees growing in the southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It also discusses the importance (1) of the different fertilizations forms in the ...determination of the various soil physicochemical and leaf chemical properties, olives yield, oil yield and quality, and (2) oil quality parameters. Cover crops can be beneficial to soil properties. The incorporation of organic manures is also beneficial to improve plant and soil physical and biological properties, which allows a better root development and longevity, and nutrient absorption. Additionally, organic crops can increase the oil yield and quality in comparison to non-organic treatments. Foliar fertilization can be a very efficient system for supplying N, P and K to olive trees. However, several applications are required to meet the needs of the crop. Olive yield decreases significantly when soil fertilization with N is eliminated for several consecutive years in comparison to the fertilization that is carried out annually. Nutrient overfertilizationcan lead to several negative effects from the environmental point of view. Fertilization with P might be unnecessary due to the extensive root system of the olive trees. Olive have a high K requirement since large amounts of K are removed each year at harvest. However, fertilization with different levels of K had negligible effects on oil quality. Oil quality parameters were first associated with N concentrations in leaves and fruits. The phenolic content of the oil decreased linearly in relation to the increase of N in the leaves, which indicates a competition between the synthesis of proteins and the phenolic compounds.

Se comunica la presencia de esta especie exótica en la provincia de Buenos Aires, en los partidos de Azul y OlavarrÃa, constituyendo el primer registro para el centro de Argentina en su área pampeana. Se describe, se ilustra con fotografÃas y se presentan nuevas observaciones respecto a su distribución y hábitat.
