The subject of the paper is a spatial, urban-architectural, and symbolic interpretation of the monuments of the National Liberation War in Kosovo and Metohija, by Svetomir Arsić Basara. The Monument ...to People's Heroes Boris Vukmirović and Ramiz Sadiku and the Monument to the Šar Mountains Partisan Detachment were chosen for the analysis. The aim of this paper is to determine the relations between the sculptural form and man, but also the basic urban-architectural and monumental relations, characteristics, messages, and meanings, through the interpretation of the principles of spatial perception of the monuments. For the purposes of this research, data on the available archival material and the existing condition of the monuments were collected, an interview was conducted with the author of the monuments, Svetomir Arsić Basara, and then an urban-architectural and symbolic interpretation of the monuments was given. The paper provides a historical overview, an overview of social circumstances and relations, as well as authorial processes in urban-architectural designing solutions, therefore, this paper can contribute to the expansion of the current modest knowledge about the urban-architectural characteristics of the monuments, and a better understanding of their memorial symbolism.

War is no popular topic for geographers. While historically geography has long been closely related to the waging of war, since World War II academic geographers have distanced themselves from the ...military. There are three categories of geographical perspectives related to war. First, military geographies deal with the application of geographical knowledge to wage war and to carry out military activities. Second, human geographies of war (and the military) consider the impact of war on human societies. And third, political geographies of war (and peace) study the pattern of international relations and the factors that explain the occurrence of war. The huge gap between geography in military circles (the first approach) and geography in academic circles (the second and third approaches) is striking. New developments in warfare, international relations, and global governance underline that the need for mutual engagement is greater than ever. While the new role of the military warrants critical scrutiny from academic geographers, the military also needs more and more human and political geographical knowledge to carry out its new tasks in the most ethical way possible.
As part of recent research into the Portuguese colonial war in the sphere of memory studies, this article seeks to fill a gap in the underexplored field of digital memories. It aims, firstly, to ...explore the processes through which discourses about the Portuguese colonial war are produced in the Portuguese version of Wikipedia, looking at its dynamics and mechanisms of construction, including formal and informal rules; and secondly, to analyse that discourse using theoretical and methodological considerations from critical discourse analysis (CDA), complemented with concepts of absence and silence, which enable a reflection on the relationship between power, knowledge and memory. The article also explores the limits of Wikipedia as regards the formation of collaborative narratives about the past, arguing that they are marked by the reproduction of Eurocentric narratives which circulate in political, educational and media discourses, and also by the memories of more conservative sectors of Portuguese society, such as war veterans and former settlers returning from the colonies (the so-called retornados). These narratives mask the colonial violence and resistance to it that preceded the colonial war and depoliticize the struggle of the national liberation movements.

Clothed in Robes of Sovereignty examines the material artifacts, festivities, and rituals by which Congress endeavored not only to assert its political legitimacy and to bolster the war effort, but ...ultimately to glorify the United States and to win the allegiance of the American people. But fact, as Benjamin H. Irvin demonstrates, the "people out of doors"--including the working poor, women, loyalists, Native Americans and others not represented in Congress--vigorously contested the trappings of nationhood into which Congress had enfolded them.
Algeria sits at the crossroads of the Atlantic, European, Arab, and African worlds. Yet, unlike the wars in Korea and Vietnam, Algeria's fight for independence has rarely been viewed as an ...international conflict. Even forty years later, it is remembered as the scene of a national drama thatculminated with Charles de Gaulle's decision to grant Algerians their independence despite assassination attempts, mutinies, and settler insurrection.Yet, as Matthew Connelly demonstrates, the war the Algerians fought occupied a world stage, one in which the U.S. and the USSR, Israel and Egypt, Great Britain, Germany, and China all played key roles. Recognizing the futility of confronting France in a purely military struggle, the Front deLiberation Nationale instead sought to exploit the Cold War competition and regional rivalries, the spread of mass communications and emigrant communities, and the proliferation of international and non-governmental organizations. By harnessing the forces of nascent globalization they divided Franceinternally and isolated it from the world community. And, by winning rights and recognition as Algeria's legitimate rulers without actually liberating the national territory, they rewrote the rules of international relations.Based on research spanning three continents and including, for the first time, the rebels' own archives, this study offers a landmark reevaluation of one of the great anti-colonial struggles as well as a model of the new international history. It will appeal to historians of post-colonial studies,twentieth-century diplomacy, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
