Recently, it is popular for museums, libraries, and broadcasting companies to digitalize and archive their contents. Once those digitized contents are on-line, it is believed that they are utilized ...by many people for many purposes. However, due to the difference of the archived content formats and API of existing digital archive systems, it is difficult to utilize the contents across the organizations. We propose an open digital archive system. The openness of system has two meanings; the ability to access to the contents managed by different organizations by a single way, and the ability for third parties to create new machine learning based search systems with any types of feature values. Our open digital archive system introduces a global unique identifier for each of digital archive contents and implemented a data format based on OAIS model that can be used for any types of files. In addition, we introduced a mechanism for magnetic tape storage devices. Finally, we confirmed that feature value extraction processing works well in our system and the read and write throughput of archive format content achieves about 130 MB/s and 200 MB/s respectively.
Purpose
The purpose of this technical paper is to evaluate the emerging standard “Allotrope Data Format (ADF)” in the context of digital preservation at a major US academic library hosted at Brigham ...Young University. In combination with the new information management system ZONTAL Space (ZS), archiving with the ADF is compared with currently used systems CONTENTdm and ROSETTA.
Design/methodology/approach
The approach is a workflow-based comparison in terms of usability, functionality and reliability of the systems. Current workflows are replaced by optimized target processes, which limit the number of involved parties and process steps. The connectors or manual solutions between the current workflow steps are replaced with automatic functions inside of ZS. Reporting functionalities inside of ZS are used to track system and file lifecycle to ensure stability and data preservation.
Findings
The authors find that the target processes leveraging ZS drastically reduce complexity compared to current workflows. Archiving with the ADF is found to decrease integration complexity and provide a more robust data migration path for the future. The possibility to enrich data automatically with metadata and to store this information alongside the content in the same information package increases reusability of the data.
Research limitations/implications
The practical implications of this work suggest the arrival of a new information management system that can potentially revolutionize the archiving landscape within libraries. Beyond the scope of the initial proof of concept, the potential for the system can be seen to replace existing data management tools and provide access to new data analytics applications, like smart recommender systems.
Originality/value
The value of this study is a systematic introduction of ZS and the ADF, two emerging solutions from the Pharmaceutical Industry, to the broader audience of digital preservation experts within US libraries. The authors consider the exchange of best practices and solutions between industries to be of high value to the communities.
Since 2006 the education authorities in Switzerland have been obliged by the Constitution to harmonize important benchmarks in the educational system throughout Switzerland. With the development of ...national educational objectives in four disciplines an important basis for the implementation of this constitutional mandate was created. In 2013 the Swiss National Core Skills Assessment Program (in German: ÜGK - Überprüfung der Grundkompetenzen) was initiated to investigate the skills of students, starting with three of four domains: mathematics, language of teaching and first foreign language in grades 2, 6 and 9. ÜGK uses a computer-based test and a sample size of 25.000 students per year.A huge challenge for computer-based educational assessment is the research data management process. Data from several different systems and tools existing in different formats has to be merged to obtain data products researchers can utilize. The long term preservation has to be adapted as well. In this paper, we describe our current processes and data sources as well as our ideas for enhancing the data management. Keywords: Research data management, educational sciences, computer-based assessments, metadata, OAIS
National Diet Library (NDL) has been archiving and providing access to a large amount of digitized library materials and online publications (electronic books and electronic magazines) from the ...Internet. This paper provides an overview of the “NDL Digital Collections”, which is an archiving system for digital resource, from the viewpoint of functional requirement of the OAIS reference model, and describing the future task of a long-term preservation of digital resource.
For publicly accessible databases on the Internet, long-term accessibility is not necessarily secured in general, because of change in contents, relocation of URL, and/or even closure of the ...websites. In this paper, we report on the results of accessibility survey as of April 2017 for the databases registered in the National Diet Library (NDL) Database Navigation Service (Dnavi; operated in 2002-2014), showing that web access was rejected for 22% of total 17,470 databases after three years. We discuss sustainable access to databases published on web sites, from a view point of use of NDL’s WARP (Web Archiving Project), and based on the OAIS reference model which is a standard of electronic information for long-term preservation.
Examines how the current practices in a data repository map to the open archival information system (OAIS) environment and functional components. Looks specifically at the current actions (activities ...regarding their work responsibilities) and IT practices of employees at the world’s largest social science data repository, the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).
The Open Archive Information System (oais) reference model is an iso standard originally developed by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (ccsds). The model serves to define the processes for effective, long-term preservation of information, while ensuring access to them. This model also provides a common language for describing these objects and has been widely accepted in the digital preservation community. Since it is not an application architecture, many experts have called into question its use. This paper examines the features of the model and the scientific controversy arising from its adaptability to diverse scenarios and wide-spread implementation.
