In this volume Jaap Kamphuis provides a comprehensive and systematic corpus-based quantitative and qualitative study of verbal aspect in Old Church Slavonic.
Rhetoric and Rhythm in Byzantium takes a fresh look at rhetorical rhythm and its theory and practice, highlighting the close affinity between rhythm and argument. Based on material from Byzantine and ...Old Church Slavonic homilies and from Byzantine rhetorical commentaries, the book redefines and expands our understanding of both Byzantine and Old Church Slavonic prose rhythm. It positions rhetorical rhythm at the intersection of prose and poetry and explores its role in argumentation and persuasion, suggesting that rhetorical rhythm can carry across linguistic boundaries, and in general aims to demonstrate the stylistic and argumentative importance of rhythm in rhetorical practice. Along the way, it challenges the entrenched separation between content and style and emphasizes the role of rhythm as a tool of invention and a means of creating shared emotional experience.
The Old Church Slavonic Language: A Source of Inspiration or an Unnecessary Burden? On the Possibilities of Using OCS Grammar in the Teaching and Learning of Modern Slavic Languages
The aim of this ...article was to investigate the status of the Old Church Slavonic language in the context of today’s academic didactics, especially in Slavic studies. The research aimed to test two hypotheses: (a) an Old Church Slavonic course is useful in the teaching of modern Slavic languages, (b) students of Slavic studies can see the practical dimension of a course in this language and the links between Old Church Slavonic and other Slavic languages. In the course of the analysis, both hypotheses were confirmed: it was proven that the Old Church Slavonic language course can have a practical application, and for most students this aspect of the course is important. The results of the study can be used to improve the course on the grammar of Old Church Slavonic: from the revision of the syllabus entries to specific exercises in classes with students.

The paper focuses on information about Old Church Slavonic verbs, that can be gained in The Comparative Index Towards The Dictionaries Produced Under The Commission For Old Church Slavonic Lexicology ...And Lexicography At Ics (so-called Srovnávací index k slovníkům zpracovávaným v rámci Komise pro církevněslovanské slovníky u MKS; ed. Zdenka Ribarova, 2007—), which in one place from comparative point of view unites and presents among other different images of verbs or verb forms (of individual Church Slavonic recensional dictionaries (includes: Старославянский словарь (= SS; after manuscripts X.—XI. c.; Moscow 1994), Slovník jazyka staroslověnského (= SJS; Prague 1958—1997), Rječnik crkvenoslavenskoga jezika hrvatske redakcije (= RCJH; Zagreb, from 1991), Речник на црковнословенскиот јазик од македонска редакција (= RCJM; Skopje, from 2006), Речник црквенословенског језика српске редакције и Српско-‑словенског јеванђељског речника (= SRJ; after unissued index, Belgrade) and Словарь древнерусского языка (XI.—XIV. вв.) (= SDRJ; Moscow, 2007—). Within entries the differences are noticed in several linguistic levels. The most differences we notice in graphemic level, where different graphems appear for the same phoneme and are in certain cases reflection of certain phonetic changes (for example denazalization, unification or loss of yers, unification ъɪ with и etc). These differences and changes often affect the morphological characteristics (eg. different endings, doublet forms). We can also notice some differences regarding reflexivised forms and in determination of verbal aspect. Judging by the results this Index presents the most exhaustive register of Old Slavonic and Old Church Slavonic lexicographic corpus and offers us many possibilities for further research.
