The article offers an analysis of Peirce's notion of “rhema.” It examines and explains Peirce's definition of the rhema; it identifies and solves two problems that are direct consequences of the ...definition. The first problem is that proper names, while classified as rhemata, do not satisfy Peirce's definition of the rhema. The second problem is that Peirce also calls “rhemata” the results of propositional analysis that however do not satisfy his own definition of the rhema. Peirce himself solves the first problem by generalizing the notion of rhema into that of “seme.” I argue that we can solve the second problem if, following M. Dummett, we distinguish propositional analysis from propositional decomposition.

When confronted with moral dilemmas, Charles S. Peirce would recommend that we trust our sentiments, not our reasoning. A scientific exploration of ethics may affect our daily conduct but should only ...do so gradually. Some modern approaches take the opposite stance and deny the significance of moral sentiments. Considering both Peirce and his opponents, I aim to contribute to the discussion of a radical moral theory: effective altruism. Stating that we should strive to do the most objective good we can, effective altruism regularly conflicts with our moral sentiments. In response, effective altruists claim that our sentiments are misguided and should be overcome. Which side is right? Using Peirce's work to answer this question reveals that effective altruism cannot clearly define how it aims to affect our daily conduct. In addition, it seeks to change our sentiments, but may alter them for the worse. Taking Peirce's insights seriously leads us to conclude that we should be cautious of how we adopt effective altruism in our lives--and that while we deliberate this, we should instead trust our sentiments.
While the reflection on self-talk goes back at least to Plato's Theaetetus, its significance for linguistic theory became apparent only recently. I re-interpret the distinction of Holmberg (2010) ...between "Italk" and "You- talk" in terms of William James' distinction of "I" and "Me", which I will call "Inner" and "Outer" self. In You-talk, the Outer Self addresses the Inner Self; in I-talk, it is either the Outer Self or the Inner Self that is speaking, depending on whether the perspective is more externalized and objectified, or internalized and expressive. Following recent work by Ritter & Wiltschko (2021), I argue that the two modes of self-talk are represented in different ways in syntax. Assuming the framework of Krifka (2015), I argue that assertions in Italk are expressive, whereas in You-talk they form self-oriented commitments of the speaker, similar to Judgements in the sense of Charles S. Peirce. I will investigate the claims about self-talk with the novella Leutnant Gustl by Arthur Schnitzler, published 1900.
Diagrammatic Instruments are objects and their associated prompts for use. They make up the core of Performative Diagrammatics, an artistic facilitating practice that tends to co-articulating own ...ways of doing and thinking among individuals in small groups, by means of conversation, movement and play. I think of Diagrammatic Instruments as akin to musical instruments, which may have multiple parts and can be tuned, modified and activated with additional, intermediate objects, as part of an intimate, corporeal relationship. Seeking new entries into being present to one another at a time when communication struggles to cut across orthodoxies, platforms and other siloes, Performative Diagrammatics resonates with practice-driven theory that details laboratory-based intra-acting (Barad 2007), self-managing through metamodelization (Guattari 2000 1989), and institutionally bringing conceptual imagination into play (Braidotti 2011). The specific diagrammaticity of Diagrammatic Instruments resides in their spatial and material configuration and the sequential and affective facilitation of their use. By mapping Diagrammatic Instruments onto Charles Sanders Peirce's iconic diagram structure (Peirce 1906, Stjernfelt 2007), tracing and where necessary stretching Peirce’s diagram stages, correspondences emerge. For example, the ease with which the transform and diagram stage is modifiable shows how a diagrammatic process need not be confined to paper, and the excitement Peirce associates with the dynamic middle interpretant foreshadows embodied performance. The prominence of abductively infused symbolic interpretants within the diagram engenders facilitation as a means to support category examination (Butler 2002). In turn, facilitating may be framed as technique of existence (Massumi 2011). Noting the role of abduction in making and operating diagrams and initially relating it to familiar artistic techniques of attending to premises and articulating techniques, a proposal emerges for an Abduction - Deduction - Induction (AB-DE-IN) model of artistic research. AB–DE–IN offers a diagrammatic, performative and realist model of artistic research that deserves further exploration.
We argue that traditional formulations of the reduction thesis that tie it to privileged relational operations do not suffice for Peirces justification of the categories and invite the charge of ...gerrymandering to make it come out as true. We then develop a more robust invariant formulation of the thesis, one that is immune to that charge, by explicating the use of triads in any relational operations. The explication also allows us to track how Thirdness enters the structure of higher order relations and even to propose a numerical measure of it. Our analysis reveals new conceptual phenomena when negation or disjunction are used to compound relations.

At the time when Saussure or Pierce were propounding and formulating their ideas about the relationship between a concept and the multiple ways they can be referred to, the world was still going ...through the extended effects of the industrial revolution. The world was still connecting and finding out that there could be multiple ways of referring to most concepts around us. But fast forward a hundred years and the world has changed a lot. Concepts have changed and we now live in an earth which is more connected than ever and new 'languages' keep cropping up once in a while. The concept of sign propounded has had a big role to play in the structure of language, at least from a theoretical point of view. In Charles Peirce and Modern Science, T.L. Short encourages us to read Peirce's oeuvre in the spirit of philosophical experimentalism. The result is a rewarding and refreshing book that clarifies ...longstanding controversies and stakes out novel positions in the debates. In these comments, I subject Short's statements regarding the validity of induction to critical scrutiny. I argue that while much of what he states is correct, he errs in holding that induction is invalid in the short run of an individual's life.
The aim of this article is to provide a preliminary overview of the relationship between aesthetics and semiotics. One of the specific places where they intersected was the cultural space of the late ...Soviets. Thus, in order to provide background information, the article first examines the historical contacts between these two fields in the works of Alexander G. Baumgarten and Charles S. Peirce, and then looks at the more systematic theories of semiotic aesthetics developed in the 1930s by Charles Morris and Jan Mukařovský. The aim of the second part of the article is to analyse in more detail the interrelations between aesthetics and semiotics in the late Soviet period, focusing primarily on the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the conditions that shaped these relationships.
En las últimas décadas, las cuestiones relativas especialmente al cuerpo humano, pero también a los cuerpos no humanos, se han convertido en uno de los grandes temas de la cultura. El cuerpo, durante ...algún tiempo, bajo el dominio de la ciencia y la medicina, se convirtió en objeto de reflexiones de filósofos, psicoanalistas, estudiosos de la cultura y, sobre todo, de la obra de los artistas. Este artículo parte de un recorrido por esta nueva condición del cuerpo para luego discutir el papel que juega el cuerpo del signo en la semiótica de C. S. Peirce. Para comprender mejor este tema, se disipan algunos malentendidos comunes que rodean las aplicaciones de la semiótica peirceana para adentrarse en la maraña de signos y sus respectivos cuerpos en la que nos vemos envueltos en las sociedades contemporáneas.
