In Sports and Aging a wide-ranging group of physically
active people, including many scholar-athletes, fifty years and
older, discuss sports in the context of aging and their own
athletic ...experiences. This collection of personal accounts includes
a spectrum of contributors across genders, social classes, and
racial, ethnic, national, religious, and educational backgrounds to
determine whether there are any common characteristics that can
promote long, happy, healthy, and meaningful lifespans. In this
fresh look at the role of sports in the process of aging,
contributors range from a ninety-six-year-old great-grandmother to
a former Olympian. Many contributors have used education to better
their lot in life or to find solace and meaning in the service of
others. For all, sports or physical activity has enhanced their
health and temperament and provided a sense of community.

Some groups participate in politics more than others. Why? And does it matter for policy outcomes? In this richly detailed and fluidly written book, Andrea Campbell argues that democratic ...participation and public policy powerfully reinforce each other. Through a case study of senior citizens in the United States and their political activity around Social Security, she shows how highly participatory groups get their policy preferences fulfilled, and how public policy itself helps create political inequality.
Using a wealth of unique survey and historical data, Campbell shows how the development of Social Security helped transform seniors from the most beleaguered to the most politically active age group. Thus empowered, seniors actively defend their programs from proposed threats, shaping policy outcomes. The participatory effects are strongest for low-income seniors, who are most dependent on Social Security. The program thus reduces political inequality within the senior population--a laudable effect--while increasing inequality between seniors and younger citizens.
A brief look across policies shows that program effects are not always positive. Welfare recipients are even less participatory than their modest socioeconomic backgrounds would imply, because of the demeaning and disenfranchising process of proving eligibility. Campbell concludes that program design profoundly shapes the nature of democratic citizenship. And proposed policies--such as Social Security privatization--must be evaluated for both their economic and political effects, because the very quality of democratic government is influenced by the kinds of policies it chooses.

framed as a socio-economic problem. In Brazil, older people are
expected to remain healthy and autonomous while actively
participating in ...society. Based on ethnographic research in São
Paulo, Ageing with Smartphones in Urban Brazil shows how
older people in a middle-class neighbourhood conciliate these
expectations with the freedom and pleasures reserved for the Third
Age. Work is what bonds this community together, providing a sense
of dignity and citizenship. Smartphones have become of great
importance to the residents as they search for and engage in new
forms of work and hobbies. Connected by a digital network, they
work as content curators, sharing activities that fill their
schedule. Managing multiple WhatsApp groups is a job in itself, as
well as a source of solidarity and hope. Friendship groups help
each to download new apps, search for medical information and
guidance, and navigate the city. Together, they are reinventing
themselves as volunteers, entrepreneurs and influencers, or they
are finding a new interest that gives their later life a purpose.
The smartphone, which enables the residents to share and discuss
their busy lives, is also helping them, and us, to rethink the very
representation of ageing.

Africa is known both for having a primarily youthful population and
for its elders being held in high esteem. However, this situation
is changing: people in Africa are living longer, some for many
...years with chronic, disabling illnesses. In Ghana, many older
people, rather than experiencing a sense of security that they will
be respected and cared for by the younger generations, feel anxious
that they will be abandoned and neglected by their kin. In response
to their concerns about care, they and their kin are exploring new
kinds of support for aging adults, from paid caregivers to social
groups and senior day centers. These innovations in care are
happening in fits and starts, in episodic and scattered ways,
visible in certain circles more than others. By examining emergent
discourses and practices of aging in Ghana, Changes in
Care makes an innovative argument about the uneven and fragile
processes by which some social change occurs. There is a short film
