Por lo general, ya podemos admitir que parte ...de su nomenclatura gramatical, como el concepto de metáfora (met.) o el de facere facere (verbos causativos) provienen directamente de la lexicografía mesoamericana relativa a diversas lenguas, como el náhuatl, el otomí o el zapoteco. También parece probado que Nebrija llegó primero a las Filipinas a través de Alonso de Molina y que luego otros lexicógrafos como Alonso de Urbano, entre otros, influyeron decisivamente en la selección léxica de las entradas de diversos vocabularios filipinos para el tagalo, el bisaya y otras lenguas del archipiélago. Dichas influencias no solo se ven reflejadas en los vocabularios, sino que responden, en general, al concepto de «bien común» que aplicaban las diversas órdenes religiosas en su tarea de apoyo a la evangelización a través de artefactos intelectuales que provenían de la tradición europea, los glosarios, los vocabularios y los calepinos, elementos complementarios de las Artes o gramáticas . Algunos autores, con mayor o menor fortuna, han investigado los préstamos que aparecen en el primer vocabulario impreso de la lengua tagala y del bisaya, su fraseología, sus informaciones pragmáticas más relevantes, algunas de sus informaciones enciclopédicas, parte de su metalenguaje gramatical e incluso algunas partes de su gramática oculta derivada del corpus de ejemplificaciones del vocabulario.
At the dawn of the twentieth century, the U.S. Army swiftly occupied Manila and then plunged into a decade-long pacification campaign with striking parallels to today’s war in Iraq. Armed with ...cutting-edge technology from America’s first information revolution, the U.S. colonial regime created the most modern police and intelligence units anywhere under the American flag. In Policing America’s Empire Alfred W. McCoy shows how this imperial panopticon slowly crushed the Filipino revolutionary movement with a lethal mix of firepower, surveillance, and incriminating information. Even after Washington freed its colony and won global power in 1945, it would intervene in the Philippines periodically for the next half-century—using the country as a laboratory for counterinsurgency and rearming local security forces for repression. In trying to create a democracy in the Philippines, the United States unleashed profoundly undemocratic forces that persist to the present day.     But security techniques bred in the tropical hothouse of colonial rule were not contained, McCoy shows, at this remote periphery of American power. Migrating homeward through both personnel and policies, these innovations helped shape a new federal security apparatus during World War I. Once established under the pressures of wartime mobilization, this distinctively American system of public-private surveillance persisted in various forms for the next fifty years, as an omnipresent, sub rosa matrix that honeycombed U.S. society with active informers, secretive civilian organizations, and government counterintelligence agencies. Using empirical evidence this book illustrates the commonalities and the differences among the different countries and recommends that serious attention should be paid to location-specific dimensions of sex trafficking in designing anti-sex trafficking strategies.
AbstractThis paper reports the investigation outcomes of the recent Super Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Hurricane Yolanda) in the Philippines using a basic structure damage rating technique. The ...rating technique ranked damaged conditions based on a 0 to 3 rating. A total of 156 structures were analyzed using the rating technique. Unlike previously published condition ratings, the technique does not include functional assessments such as mechanical and electrical systems and does not directly consider habitant safety nor costs to structure. The intent of the rating is to provide a quantitative measure of the effects of Haiyan. The outcomes indicate that wind damage dominated as the major cause of failures (53%) and that roof damage is the most significant of the damage modes (21%). The rating gives a first-order assessment of the damaged conditions of the structures pertaining to the loading effects (wind, water or storm surge, or combined) from Super Typhoon Haiyan.
This paper presents a comparison between numerically estimated storm surge invoked by typhoon Yolanda (2013) and field survey results. In order to estimate the typhoon more accurately, TC-Bogus ...scheme is used in typhoon simulation. This scheme has a potential to improve an initial atmospheric field and give a better results, in terms of routes and minimum sea surface pressure of the typhoon. In the results of calculated storm surge, a height of the estimated storm surge reached approximately 5.0 m at Tacloban. This value is a good agreement with the measured height. The timing of the storm surge was 00:00 UTC 8th November 2013. The estimated time of the storm surge invoked by Yolanda is almost the same with that of information from residents. Thus, the storm surge model composed of the WRF, FVCOM, SWAN and WX-tide has a potential to reproduce the storm surge realistically.
Corosolic acid content and distribution in Lagerstroemia speciosa Pars. were investigated, indicating that the red leaves contained more corosolic acid than the green leaves and other plant parts ...such as petals, roots and seeds. The leaf redness was derived from cyanidin 3-O-glucoside which was first identified in this species. The contents of corosolic acid and cyanidin 3-O-glucoside were found to be well correlated, supporting the traditional perception of local people of the Philippines that red leaf banaba tea exerts more pronounced medicinal effects.
This essay examines a brief affair between General Douglas MacArthur and a mixed-race Filipina vaudeville actress named Isabel Rosario Cooper. It focuses on Cooper's little-documented and ...underexamined life as a way to understand how the intimate politics of the bedroom overlapped with the libidinal economies of the cosmopolitan Philippine entertainment industry, American military occupation, and broader geopolitical relations of imperial desire. Cooper and MacArthur's liaison was constitutive of as well as constituted by the larger international “romance” between the United States and the Philippines that MacArthur himself oversaw in the early and middle part of the twentieth century. Going beyond the salacious details of an illicit love affair, this study seeks to illuminate how intimacy made up a type of imperial labor writ small, which served to underpin the project of US imperialism as crucially as colonial administration or military occupation.
