This thesis seeks to question the practice of a piano soloist – the interpreter of so-called “pure” or absolute music – drawing on several psychoanalytical reflections about music. In psychoanalysis, vocal or instrumental music is approached from the object of the “invocative impulse” – the voice. We perceive the “instrumental voice”, produced by the pianist and his or her instrument, as being a prosthesis of the singing human voice. We also draw on the notion of the “augmented human”, which first appeared in the 1990s, to form the hypothesis that music for piano is itself an augmented voice. The objective of the pianist is to be able to express him or herself through what we have termed the “prosthetic augmented voice”. To express him or herself through this “prosthetic augmented voice”, the pianist has to, first of all, transcend his or her own body. This is because the support of this voice is in fact his or her own body gestures.
This thesis is a research into the style and influences on the solo piano works of Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949). For the first time the composer is considered in relation to the pianistic milieu he was acquainted with during his Berlin years (1921-1933) and his oeuvre is examined in the light of its various references. A specific analytical methodology emerges from these influences, aiming at facilitating the performer’s work and revealing the stylistic components of the pieces. The refinement of the timbre in the playing of Berlin pianists in the interwar years, enhanced by the “coloured sound” of the Bechstein historical pianos, acquires a special importance. It leads to a series of analyses and graphs, showing the role of texture and timbre as compositional elements in Skalkottas’s piano music. The graphs, meant for the use of pianists, reveal an interaction between texture and form. This is complemented by the study of the piano pieces grouped according to their references; they extend from baroque music and Beethoven to dance jazz, light music, and Greek music elements. Both approaches can be justified from the study of primary sources, used for the first time in relation to this repertoire, and are complementary. By offering pianists new tools for its interpretation, the aim is to facilitate the access to this music and help its further promotion.
While free improvisation is often thought of as a forum for singular and short-lived musical encounters, long-lasting groups and collaborations that span many years are not uncommon in the world of free improvisation. By studying the case of a duo of improvisers composed of the pianist Ève Risser and the clarinetist Joris Rühl, this paper sheds light upon the creative dynamics of such a long-term collaboration by specifying how musicians negotiate between the need to construct a shared and stable collective identity, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the requirements of improvisation understood as spontaneous action.

The aim of this work is to study the performing art of several generations of pianists who were trained in the 19th Century but who extended their artistic activity throught the 1st half of the 20th Century. The rise of the art of interpretation which marked this period gave the artistes who - following their great masters - have left a considerable number of records where their plaiyng conjures up an image of the romantic composition that may be more authentic, though it is quite different from that of today.Based on the idea that the rise of the pianism at the turn of the 20th Century comes largely from the remarkable expansion of the 19th Century performing arts, we hypothesize that it is precisely in the aesthetic positions and the vision of the world inherent in the Romantic era that we should look for the sources of such a rise. Chief among the important features of the style of interpretation of the pianists of the 2nd half of the 19th Century, was their creative thinking, but also the surprising freedom they enjoyed to improvise and modify compositions. Other features include the intellectualism of their approach to the performed composition. Analyses of certain peculiarities of style, of the ways of playing typical of the 19th Century (such as rubato, the « pointillism » etc.) reveal the real polyphonic thougth of the Romantic era. This is not only the polyphonic writing itself, but a polyphonic principle in a broader sense, manifesting itself through the style of interpretation which, in turn, defines the specific spatio-temporal perception of these several decades.
A student of Théodore Dubois and Alexandre Guilmant, and a friend of Saint-Saëns, who advised him, Fernand de La Tombelle had a dual career as composer and virtuoso pianist and organist. No revolutionary, yet strong-willed and fiercely independent by temperament, La Tombelle is an endearing and interesting figure in several respects, which the present article will discuss on the basis of largely unpublished documents. While he had contacts with musicians consecrated by posterity, such as Grieg, Gounod, d'Indy, and Massenet, to whom he was very close, he left a large body of work in many genres, stylistically eclectic and atypical, which deserves to be reevaluated not only because of its intrinsic ment, but abo because it is richly illustrative of a particular form of social and artistic activity in fin-de-siècle France. In addition to his musical work, in which all genres are represented (songs, chamber music, works for organ, religious and secular choral works, orchestral and piano music, and incidental music sometimes accompanied by special lighting effects), his archive includes photographs, drawings, paintings, writings—both theoretical and literary—and works relating in particular to astronomy and gastronomy. All of this ultimately constitutes the oeuvre of a gifted and remarkably cultivated artist, a Renaissance man, who also devoted much effort to the musical education of the lower classes, especially in his native Périgord, to which he retired after World War I, no doubt fleeing a society he no longer understood.
The scientific work reveals various aspects of contemporary piano performance. Three international piano competitions were chosen – Chopin in Warsaw, Long-Thibaud in Paris and Tchaikovsky in Moscow – because it is through events like these ones that is exposed to its best the situation of pianistic art on a global scale. Given the complexity of our questions, we have shared our research in several areas: social and historical related to each analyzed musical competition, technical according to the chain composer-performer-listener, and artistic based on the study of interpretations of the finalists during the period 1985-2010, preceded by issues evaluation in this context. The general analysis of the current situation has highlighted the need of these competitions in contemporary musical life. If the aesthetic values of the modern world do not actually stimulate the formation of deep and strong personalities, a number of positive signs, however, seem to emerge from these events.
