Giambattista Vico: Keys to the "New Science" brings together in one volume translations, commentaries, and essays that illuminate the background of Giambattista Vico's major work.
U članku se analizira jezikoslovno nazivlje u dvjema gramatikama iz 18. st., Relkovićevoj Novoj slavonskoj, i nimačkoj gramatici (11767.) i Vinjalićevoj rukopisnoj gramatici Principi della grammatica ...... Grammatica prima in lingua slava, italiana et latina. Relkovićeva je gramatika prva vrlo opsežna gramatika hrvatskoga jezika pisana hrvatskim jezikom, i to kontrastivno, u suodnosu prema njemačkome jeziku. Rukopisna Vinjalićeva gramatika pisana je trojezično, a donedavno uglavnom nije bila predmetom interesa jezikoslovne javnosti. Kako svaki naziv u promatranim gramatikama nema uvijek svoju hrvatsku inačicu, nužno je bilo u istraživanju osvrnuti se i na latinsko nazivlje jer su promatrane gramatike pisane prema latinskomu modelu. Budući da su u postojećim potvrdama hrvatskoga nazivlja uočene sličnosti s prethodnicima (npr. s nazivljem u J. Mikalje, L. Šitovića, T. Babića, B. Tadijanovića), primjeri su stavljeni u kontekst izgradnje hrvatskoga jezikoslovnog nazivlja. Stoga se ovim radom nastoji pokazati koliko su se u izgradnji hrvatskih naziva dvojica promatranih gramatičara rukovodila uporabnom normom i već ovjerenim modelima u tvorbi novih naziva te koliko se njihovim novotvorbama koriste kasniji gramatičari.
As always in social and political sciences, theoretical thoughts derive from a surprise, or better from the questions that the surprise provokes in the observer. In this case the surprise is ...concerning the widely held trend to consider as obvious, taken for granted in the democratic systems, the enforcement of the principle (and of the rules) of majority. The surprise moreover is sustained by the perception of a «mistery» (such since the times of Locke and Rousseau): why does the minority have to agree with a majority decision, when democratic systems are based on the consent of all the citizens? Going back to the origins of this enforcement, that is to the times where the majoritarian principle and rules where absolutely out of the political tradition, can contribute to provide some answers to the theoretical questions. The article so returns until the medieval pontificial and imperial elections, on the basis of the masterly historical reconstruction of Edoardo Ruffini. The principle (and the annexed rules) immediately revealed important anomalies: first of all the difficulty to legitimized it through individualistic arguments. By consequence the relationship of the principle with the existence and the operation of collective subjects, considered as the necessary condition for the successful enforcement of the same principle, is at the center of the theoretical argument of this article. The step forward for the principle begins when it is possible to realize the source of the votes not in individuals but in the collegium, or the corporation, in other words in the unitary collective subject. The necessity of this source can explain the exclusion of the principle for the issues (mainly religious) that can provoke deep cleavages in the unity of the subject. In the end of the article the various forms of resistance against the principle (and the rules) carried out by partial or minor «societies» are considered through the so called pluralistic relations, always looking for something close to the principle of unanimity.
This paper aims to contribute to the research agenda on guiding values that shape regulatory state and the development of economic and social regulation in the communications sector after the ...approval of the European directives on consumer and user protection and on universal service. It explores the way Independent Regulatory Agencies (IRAs) give an account of their different roles in setting protection regimes and specific policy instruments such as the universal service programs in the TLC sector. Applying a quantitative-qualitative analysis of textual data to annual reports delivered by nine European member states between 2003-2014, we explore how the ideas of market efficiency and liberalization associated with regulatory state and instances of social inclusion are balanced within universal service programs in Europe. The paper, in conclusion, offers a new typology of protection regimes combining two variables: the orientation towards market or state, and the protection channel, through access or service content.

Among the classics of the history of philosophy, the Scienza nuova ( New Science ) by Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) was largely neglected and generally misunderstood during the author's lifetime. ...From the nineteenth century onwards Vico's views found a wider audience, and today his influence is widespread in the humanities and social sciences. The New Science is often taught in courses at colleges and universities, both in philosophy and Italian departments and in general humanities courses. Despite the excellent English translations of this enigmatic book and numerous studies in English of Vico, many sections of the work remain challenging to the modern reader. Vico's New Science of the Intersubjective World offers both an in-depth analysis of all the important ideas of the book and an evaluation of their contribution to our present understanding of the social world. In the first chapter, Vittorio Hösle examines Vico's life, sources, and writings. The second and third chapters discuss the concerns and problems of the Scienza nuova. The fourth chapter traces the broader history of Vico's reception. Hösle facilitates the understanding of many passages in the work as well as the overarching structure of its claims, which are often dispersed over many sections. Hösle reformulates Vico's vision in such a way that it is not only of historical interest but may inspire ongoing debates about the nature of the humanities and social sciences as well as many other issues on which Vico sheds light, from the relation of poetry and poetics to the development of law. The Covid-19 crisis hit the world at a time when neoliberal politics had systematically eroded social solidarity with their emphasis on unrestrained individualism. The collective measures necessary ...to contain the pandemic infringe people's autonomy severely, and thereby expose the contradictory polarisation between individual liberty and the 'common good' which has arisen. 'Social distancing' has long become an accompanying feature of globalisation and the crisis threatens to deepen social, economic and political divisions and to herald a retreat to more divisive measures. The professional experience social work and social pedagogy have in dealing with the underlying contradictions and their specific knowledge on how to constitute social solidarity in conditions of justice and equality are now more than ever relevant in the post-crisis reconstruction. Their core message is that personal autonomy can only be achieved in the context of fair structural conditions, and these professions have a vital role in promoting the constructive realignment of both spheres.
