The paper deals with the Proto-Slavic two-part personal names reconstructed in the Etymological Dictionary of Slavic Languages (EDSL), vols. 1–42. Indo-European by their origin, these names retained ...their use among all Slavs even after the adoption of Christianity and the assimilation of the Christian name set. The author examines the set of lexical units that occur in two-part proto-Slavic anthroponyms, the rules of their design (pure basis, truncated basis, word form) and connection with one another (the presence or absence of a connector). It is shown that the first and second parts of a compound name have different properties: the first element can be represented by verbal, substantive, adjective bases, pronominal bases, adverbs, prepositions / prefixes, while the second — only by verbal, substantive, and adjective bases. Most certainly, EDSL does not claim to incorporate all binominal anthroponyms of this type in the Proto-Slavic language but provides a clear idea on the anthroponymic and wordbuilding patterns of compounds in the Proto-Slavic language, as well as their syntactic and semantic features. These patterns are quite similar to those existing in appellative vocabulary and anthroponymic systems of other Indo-European languages. The lexical and ideographic inventory of the units indirectly refers to the value system underlying the onomastic tradition (cf. the popularity of such concepts as ‘dear,’ ‘friend,’ ‘guest,’ ‘glad,’ ‘peace,’ ‘glory,’ ‘holy,’ ‘love,’ ‘praise,’ etc.).
Contemporary etymological research is largely aimed at rethinking hitherto offered etymological solutions, especially for words that do not have a generally accepted interpretation. One of those ...words is PSl *kovyl? / *kovyl? ?feather-grass, Stipa pennata?, whose continuants are attested mainly in Eastern and Southern Slavic languages: Ru. kovy?, kovyl, Ukr. kovi?, kovila, Bel. kavy?, Bulg. kovil, koil, kofi l, Mac. kovil, kofi l, SCr. kovilje, Sln. kovilje. The etymological literature has drawn attention to the potential connection of PSl *kovyl? / *kovyl? with the verb *kovy?ati (s?) ?to swing, wobble, stagger?, even though this verb does not have a unanimously accepted interpretation either. This paper departs from the assumption that the phytonym and verb under consideration have a common origin, and that the prefi x *ko- is distinguished in both forms. The verb is related to PSl *v?lati, v?laj? ?to swing, swing on waves?, related to PSl *v?lna ?wave?, *valiti (s?) ?to roll?, and ultimately boils down to the IE root *?elH- ?to roll?. As among the continuants and derivatives of the PSl verb *v?lati there is a variation of the reduced vowels (-?- : -?-) at the root (cf. OCS v?lajati s? ?to oscillate (about waves)?, etc.), forms with the vocalism -?- could serve as a basis for the occurrence of the secondary ablaut *v?l- / *vyl-. Thus, from the unconfirmed prefixed form *ko-v?lati s? (a form without the prefix *v?lati s? is reconstructed!), an intense / iterative *kovyl(j)ati s? could be created in the same meaning. The variance of -ati / -jati can be explained from the original *kovylati, kovilj? (s?), with the subsequent spread of the palatal ? from the present tense stem to the infinitive stem. This also explains the variation of the palatal and non-palatal l at the end of the stem of the deverbal noun *kovyl? / *kovyl?.
This dictionary in the Leiden Indo-European Etymological Dictionary Series systematically and exhaustively deals with the Slavic inherited lexicon. It is unique in combining recent insights from the ...field of comparative Indo-European linguistics with modern Balto-Slavic accentology. In addition, the author makes an explicit attempt at reconstructing part of the Balto-Slavic lexicon.The entries of the dictionary are alphabetically arranged Proto-Slavic etyma. Each lemma consists of a number of fields which contain the evidence, reconstructions and notes. The introduction explains the contents and the significance of the individual fields. Here the reader can also find information on the various sources of the material. The volume concludes with an extensive bibliography of sources and secondary literature, and a word index.

During the research, it has been considered which toponyms on the Balkan Peninsula are named after the plant elder (Proto-Slavic base *baz). Using etymology dictionaries, as well as the list of ...settlements of the Republic of Serbia, we have found twenty-three such toponyms. All the places named by them are situated in the mountain region, which is exactly the area where the elders grow. Phonetic variations which exist among the except toponyms are differently interpreted by etimologists. Most of the settlements are very old, which confirms the Proto-Slavic origin and refutes the interpretation given in the folk tales. Trojan/Trajan is associated with the elder - in the story about the emperor with the goat's ears, the elder reveals the secret about the emperor's oddness. In the research, the emperor Trojan/Trajan is associated with Triglav, the Slavic god symbolized by the elder.
The paper deals with the insertion of the dental stops t and d in the history of the Croatian language. During the Proto-Slavic period, the non-etymological dental consonant t was inserted between s ...and r - this innovation can be defined as Proto-Slavic excrescence, since it was well-preserved in all Slavic languages. The best-known example of this sound change is the Proto-Slavic word *struja ‘stream’, whose cognates are the Lithuanian srauja ‘stream’, the Old Indic sravati, and the Greek ῥέω ‘to flow’. Proto-Slavic excrescence emerged after the satemisation of the Indo-European palatovelars, but prior to the metathesis of liquid resonants, which took place in the early ninth century. After the disintegration of the Proto-Slavic language, the same type of sound change occurred in some South Slavic dialects, including the Štokavian and Čakavian dialects of Croatian. The new South Slavic excrescence affected the consonant clusters sr, žr, and zr creating new forms of inherited lexemes, such as striješ ‘frost’ (< PSl. *seršь) and ždrijebe ‘foal’ (< PSl. *žerbę). Many of these lexemes are attested in Standard Croatian, and this paper attempts to properly explain their history and etymology.
The main part of the monography ('Proto-Slavic Masculine i-Nouns in Slovenian Literary Language of the 16th Century') is the analyze of the reflexes of Proto-Slavic i-stem nouns of masculine gender ...in Slovenian literary language of the 16th century.The Proto-Slavic i-stem nouns of masculine gender in Slovenian literary language of the 16th century can reflect as nouns of o-stem masculine, i-stem feminine, i-stem masculine (gospod “sir”, ljudje “people”, partly also, pot “path”), u-stem (circumflected monosyllables), a-stem and in the plural mixed i-stem and o-stem (masculine) or mixed i-stem and o-stem (miš ˮmouseˮ) declension. Mostly the reflexes of i-stem declension are limited to individual case form and are not reflected in the overall paradigm. There is the increased conservation of i-stem declension in plural while in the singular the transition to o-stem patterns is larger.
The article focuses on the toponymy of the Eastern part of modern Germany where Slavic and Germanic tribes were in contact during several centuries: in the 7th century the Slavs ousted Germanic ...tribes from this territory; then, since the early 10th century, the area started being repopulated by the Germans, which led to a Slavic-Germanic bilingualism (by the 13th century the domination of the Germanic population became evident). The author argues that these ethnic and linguistic contacts are reflected in the borrowing of geographic names and terms, as well as in Germanic-Slavic “hybrid” place names that the author proposes to call hybridonyms. The Slavs readily borrowed Old Germanic (“Pre-German”) toponyms, the hybridonyms bearing traces of the late Proto-Slavic language. The author thoroughly analyzes a number of hybrid place names (Borgishain, Jenz, Leipzig, Jenzig) reducing them to one toponymic type consisting of a Germanic stem and Slavic suffixes. A large part of the paper discusses the terms hybrid and hybridization as applied to place names and seeks to theoretically substantiate the term hybridonym.
