Este ensayo analiza las cuatro páginas de los Anales de Cuauhtitlan que tratan la vida y muerte de Quetzalcóatl. En él, me ciño a un punto de vista: revisar las fuentes históricas que refieren a ...Quetzalcóatl a la luz de lo que sabemos del teatro del misterio religioso en el México prehispánico, representaciones teatrales que culminan con el sacrificio del actor principal o bien de toda la agrupación. Algunos autores opinan que Quetzalcóatl fue un personaje histórico y otros que fue una figura únicamente mítica, aunque es posible que fuese ambos. Los Anales de Cuauhtitlan describen una o más representaciones históricas de un libreto mitológico.
En las fiestas de las veintenas del año solar celebradas por los antiguos nahuas se ponían en escena repetidamente los ciclos míticos de los seres divinos. Entre éstos, el dios tutelar mexica ...Huitzilopochtli ocupaba un lugar privilegiado, ya que aparecía representado bajo el aspecto de una multitud de ixiptla. En este trabajo nos dedicaremos al estudio de sus ixiptla comestibles (hechos con una masa de amaranto y miel negra de maguey, llamada tzoalli), quienes eran protagonistas de los ritos de las fiestas de Toxcatl y Panquetzaliztli. A través de un análisis minucioso de la iconografía y de los atavíos que el dios lucía en estas dos fiestas, propondremos que las dos efigies representaban facetas distintas del dios, las cuales reflejaban segmentos peculiares del ciclo mitológico del dios colibrí, poniendo énfasis en el sacrificio y muerte de su ixiptla de tzoalli. Esta propuesta dará paso a una reflexión sobre la relación entre estas múltiples ixiptla y los segmentos rituales que, en Panquetzaliztli, reproducían el mito del nacimiento del numen en el Coatepec, destacando la importancia de profundizar en las fases calendáricas en las que los dioses vivían entre los hombres.

Résumé Cet essai analyse les quatre pages du texte des Annales de Cuauhtitlan qui traitent de la vie et de la mort de Quetzalcóatl. Je me suis limité à un seul point de vue : celui de relire les ...sources concernant Quetzalcóatl à la lumière de ce que nous savons du mystère religieux dans le Mexique préhispanique, représentations théâtrales se terminant par le sacrifice de l'acteur principal et parfois de tout son entourage. Quetzalcóatl fut-il un personnage historique comme le soutiennent les uns ou une figure mythique comme l'affirment les autres ? Il est possible qu'il ait été tout à la fois entièrement mythologique et entièrement historique parce que le texte des Annales fait référence à une ou des représentations jouées historiquement d'un libretto mythologique.
Una de las principales discusiones sobre el papel de Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl en la historia de Mesoamérica se ha centrado en el lugar que éste ocupó en la sucesión de gobernantes de Tula. ...Paul Kirchhoff y Wigberto Jiménez Moreno iniciaron esta discusión. A partir de entonces, algunos autores sostienen que Ce Acatl fue uno de los primeros tlahtoque de los toltecas; otros, que fue contemporáneo de Huemac y testigo de la caída de Tula. Este artículo ofrece un análisis de la historia de Ce Acatl desde la tradición colhua, a través de la cual es posible establecer que este gobernante se ubicó en la mitad de la línea de sucesión. Además, en el texto se abordan temas como los vínculos familiares de Ce Acatl, el contexto en el que se estableció la primera excan tlahtoloyan y las características del sistema de gobierno entre los toltecas.
In this article we review the indigenous myths of the Nahua world in the poetry of Octavio Paz. We start from the idea of a myth as an identifying aspect of culture, located as a manifestation of ...syncretism of Mexico. Quetzalcoatl, the legend of the suns and the Aztec calendar, as well as the image of Coatlicue constitute our dialogue, although some other gods of the pre-Hispanic imagery will be referred to Octavio Paz´s poetical work.
"The Myth of Quetzalcoatl is a translation of Alfredo Lpez Austins 1973 book Hombre-Dios: Religin y politica en el mundo nhuatl. Despite its pervasive and lasting influence on the study of ...Mesoamerican history, religion in general, and the Quetzalcoatl myth in particular, this work has not been available in English until now.The importance of Hombre-Dios and its status as a classic arise from its interdisciplinary approach, creative use of a wide range of source material, and unsurpassed treatment of its subjectthe nature and content of religious beliefs and rituals among the native populations of Mesoamerica and the manner in which they fused with and helped sanctify political authority and rulership in both the pre- and post-conquest periods. For more than 3500 years, since Olmec times (1500–400 BC), the peoples of Mesoamerica have shared with one another a profound way of living involving a deep understanding of the human body and of ...land and cosmology. As it stands, healing ways of knowing that depend on medicinal plants, the Earth’s elements, and knowledge of the stars are still intact. The Indigenous Xicana/o/xs who belong to many of the mobile tribes of Mesoamerica share a long genealogical history of cultivating and sustaining their Native American rituals, which was weakened in Mexico and the United States during various periods of colonization. This special edition essay sheds light on the story of Quetzalcoatl and the Venus Star as a familial place of Xicana/o/x belonging and practice. To do so, we rely on the archaeological interpretation of these two entities as one may get to know them through artifacts, monuments, and ethnographic accounts, of which some date to Mesoamerica’s Formative period (1500–400 BC). Throughout this paper, ancestral medicine ways are shown to help cultivate positive health, learning, and community. Such cosmic knowledge is poorly understood, yet it may further culturally relevant education and the treatment of the rampant health disparities in communities of Mesoamerican ancestry living in the United States. The values of and insights into Indigenous Xicana/o/x knowledge and identity conclude this essay.

Teotihuacan, the most important city of the Americas during the Classic period, developed a deep and complex civilization without any written histories. This millennial culture mostly used pictorial forms of visual communication expressed in numerous mural paintings. Thus, the knowledge of the absolute chronology of some of the most important mural arts is of great importance. Here, we report a comprehensive magnetic survey on two major murals of Palace of Quetzalcoatl, which represent an initial stage of the Teotihuacan archaeology. The magnetic mineralogy of sampled murals is dominated by both magnetite and hematite grains. The contribution of hematite, however, seems to be minor in the Pictorial Remanent Magnetization. Characteristic remanence was successfully isolated for 11 out of 16 analyzed samples belonging to both paintings. Archaeomagnetic dating was achieved using magnetic inclination and declination, yielding an interval between 312 CE and 409 CE as the best estimate of the time of painting of the murals. This study reinforces the early hypothesis that, red color mural paintings may be considered a complementary source of information about the secular variation of the Earth’s Magnetic Field.
