2016 marks the 170th birthday and 100th death anniversary of Henryk Sienkiewicz. On this occasion The Senate of Poland proclaimed 2016 the year of Sienkiewicz. In the Scientific Library of the Polish ...Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences there are a lot of materials connected with the writer, the majority of them studied and published. There are bio- bibliographi- cal materials; especially interesting are his letters to private people and to institutions. A very valuable item is the manuscript of the “Letters from Africa” from the “Czas” (a daily newspaper) files. Sienkiewicz is referred to in the memoirs of Felicja Kęszycka-Schnayder, who describes her meeting with the writer in Switzerland and later his funeral. Sienkiewicz and his work was also the subject of the studies of Józef Marian Święcicki, Benedykt Filipowicz or Józef Tretiak. An example of the writer’s interest in fine arts are his pencil drawings- sketches. The Library possesses also numerous photographs of Henryk Sienkiewcz. What is more, in Father Jan Fijałek’s collection there are numerous newspaper clips referring to Sienkiewicz giving an insight into his life and work. Sienkiewicz’s links with the Academy of Arts and Sciences should also be mentioned. He was a founder of Maria Sienkiewicz née Szetkiewicz (his wife) scholarship that was administrated by the Academy of Arts and Sciences.
This article discusses Henryk Sienkiewicz’s approach to the 19th-century “scientific racism” in his “letters” (press reportage) Z wystawy antropologicznej w Paryżu From the Anthropological Exhibition ...in Paris (1878). The paper proves that the writer’s attitude towards such anthropological criteria as the cephalic index, facial angle, skull volume, and hair shape was significantly influenced by Oscar Peschel’s work The Races of Man and Their Geographical Distribution (1876).
The article proposes an analysis of the representations of the Tatars in two historical novels published in Poland and Romania, respectively, from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the ...20th century. First of all, the article discusses the history of Sienkiewicz's reception in the Romanian literary field and interrogates the possible interferences between two (semi)peripheral literatures (Romanian and Polish) as symptoms of the polysystem (Even-Zohar) of the Central and Eastern European literary field. Secondly, the case study on Sienkiewicz's With Fire and Sword and Mihail Sadoveanu's Neamul Şoim restilor The Şoim reşti Clan discusses the imaginary constructions articulated in the description of the Tatars ethnic minority. Using the "frontier Orientalism" concept (Andre Gingrich), the article shows how the representation of the Tatars has different roles, being a pretext for defining national identity and becoming a pretext for "the creation of transnational communities" (Terian). Therefore, the paper aims to identify the ideological stakes behind the representation of the Tatars, as well as to discuss the intersections between Sienkiewicz and Sadoveanu and their effect on the historical novel's evolution.
This article is part of a stream of research on the language and style of private correspondence of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The article contains analysis of expressive lexis that the writer used to ...verbalise his negative judgments and feelings, which is complex, rich and diverse in terms of both form and meaning. The lexical material which relates to the second unsuccessful marriage of Sienkiewicz to Maria Wołodkowiczówna comes from selected letters by the writer addressed to his sister-in-law Jadwiga Janczewska neé Szetkiewicz. The selected lexis encompasses, for example, words with explicit, implicit and evaluative expression, belonging to different categories of meaning.
The translation of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel Without Dogma into Finnish, entitled Anielka (1913), generated considerable interest in the Finnish press, evidenced by as many as twelve reviews of the ...work. The article analyses these reviews, describes them in terms of a paradigm and presents their functioning on the book market. Taking into account cultural distance between Poles and Finns, the reviews are approached as a testimony to intercultural communication, which was enabled thanks to community – the paradigm of European culture and its common motifs, such as the mal du siècle or l’improductivite slave, the latter highlighted by Sienkiewicz and particularly interesting for Finnish reviewers. Cultural distance turns out to be a factor that reveals new aspects of interpretation of Without Dogma and, more broadly, the specificity of Finnish thinking about Poland.
