Up to the second half of the twentieth century, Slovenian ethnologists and folklorists were concerned almost exclusively with the phenomena of folk culture in the "traditional" sense generally used ...in European ethnology-that is, as the rural, low, simple culture typical of an ethnic community and, later on, a nation. Due to historical, economic, and social changes, the concept's semantic alterations (as reflected in academic definitions and public reception) were followed by more and broader ways of transmitting it. From the perspective of knowledge formats and other genres, the Slovenian case may offer some comparative insights into the establishment, development, and popularization of scholarship. These processes are the outcome of the scholarly reconceptualization of culture research as well as the commodification of culture.

In her article "Slovenian Folk Culture: Between Academic Knowledge and Public Display," Ingrid Slavec Gradisnik presents an overview of Slovenian folklore research, tracing its historical development ...through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and ending with an epilogue about the post-1991 period of independence. Whether working with a folk group or producing a disciplinary history, North American folklorists today insist on an explicit engagement with political concerns to obtain theoretically valid work. Contrasting what Slavec Gradisnik describes as Slovenian heteroglossic disciplinary history with the practices of North American folklorists suggests questions beyond those of definition (such as, should we broadly conceptualize "the folk" as an accessible community of "we the people," in turn made up of smaller groups, or as a linguistically bound group only open to ethnically defined heirs?). ...specific disciplinary divisions emerged in the Slovenian academic literature and research communities: contemporary lifeways were studied extensively, but research was strictly divided by theoretical approach, topical focus, and discipline of production.

The panel criticized the Air Force for failing to take action against David Wagie, who oversees curriculum and 800 instructors. A distinguished 1972 academy graduate, Wagie has served in multiple ...capacities at the academy since 1987. The panel faulted S. Taco Gilbert for not taking hold of the sexual assault issue and said he should have recognized the shortcomings of Sue Slavec, whose disciplinary style was "overly draconian and not fair," the panel wrote. Slavec told the internal investigation that she had never seen a "true rape" at the academy, meaning a woman taken completely by force. Wagie, Gilbert and Slavec could not be reached for comment. But Wayne Allard, a member of the Armed Services Committee, which oversees promotions, said "Gen. Wagie ought to leave. People who were mentioned in that report by their involvement or lack of action need to be looked at. Maybe they need a demotion."
