Bil je odličen poznavalec slovenske zgodovine in slovenskega ljudskega izročila, vendar v svoji epski pesmi o preteklosti pogosto pušča prosto pot lastni domišljiji in interpretaciji dogodkov, ki ni vselej v skladu s sodobnimi zgodovinarskimi spoznanji.
This article examines two novels by the Slovene writer Berta Bojetu Boeta: Filio is Not at Home (Filio ni doma) and The House of Birds (Ptičja hiša), both published in the 1990’s. The two works ...depict dystopian societies focused on repression and aimed at generating systematic alienation. The plots are set in remote and isolated places (an island, a mountain, a prison, a brothel) whose inhabitants are enslaved and subjected to violence which mainly affects women. The denial of freedom that characterises these societies is one of the fundamental aspects of dystopian fiction. Despite the extreme limitation of their possibilities, the characters narrated by Bojetu find ways of resisting repression through painting, reading and the creation of human bonds, thus managing to escape from dystopian environments and keep their humanity alive.
Butalske zgodbe Frana Milčinskega so besedilo, ki od nastanka do danes nagovarja široko bralsko občinstvo. Iz literarnega prostora so stopili v druge medije, jezik in folkloro. Temeljit ...literarnoteoretski pretres so doživeli šele v zadnjih desetletjih, ko je Barbara Simoniti v njih prepoznala nonsensno besedilo. Skozi hermenevtično analizo prepoznavam Butalce kot besedilo, ki gradi na številnih referencah, od ljudskega slovstva do Biblije, in odpira temeljna vprašanja, od odnosa med opazovalcem in opazovanim do odnosa med družbo in drugim. Vse te elemente omogoča dejstvo, da gre za besedilo, ki je v svojem bistvu komično in hkrati ambivalentno ̶ vsakokratna analiza vedno pušča nek nedoločljiv ostanek.
This article examines fiction, and in particular serialized translations, in the Slovenian-American newspaper Prosveta (Enlightenment) during its first decade (1916–1926) and compares it with three ...Czech-American newspapers in this regard. The comparisons establish-on the background of literary history and journalistic practices-the importance of fiction in immigrant newspapers at that time. The purposes of publishing translations in Prosveta are also considered as they relate to ethnic community building and an extension of nation-building in the United States. The newspaper is viewed as a community-building institution that featured significant reader contributions.
The article critically evaluates The Three Lives of Antigone, Slavoj Žižek’s first dramatic work. Žižek’s polemical rewriting of Sophocles’ tragedy is examined in the broader perspective of Žižek’s ...philosophy and other Antigones: those of Sophocles, Jean Anouilh, Bertolt Brecht and Dominik Smole. Slavoj Žižek has interpreted Sophocles’ Antigone in numerous philosophical works. In his earlier treatises, he mainly gave a cautious summary of Hegel’s, Heidegger’s and Lacan’s theses on Antigone; lately, however, Žižek’s attitude to Sophocles’ Antigone has grown decidedly negative. The main point in Žižek’s critique of Sophocles’ tragedy is that his Antigone is not an appropriate symbol of genuine social revolt. Based on this conviction, Žižek contrived his own version of Antigone with an alternative ending in which the choir carries out a revolution and condemns Antigone to death. It is argued in the article that Žižek’s dramatic project fails to convince. It is essentially a superficial apology for political violence, which can ultimately only be understood as a veiled defence of the political status quo.
The author examines a historical case of forced migration that is well documented in national migration research but still lacks specific insight into the conditions of entrance for post-World War II ...Slovenian refugees and their settlement in Argentina. The author explores the refugee path of Bara Remec and her family, from exile in May 1945 to their settlement in Argentina in 1948. The subjective experience is juxtaposed to the official Argentinean immigration policy of that time, especially conditions of arrival and settlement, with a focus on political, ideological, and religious factors, as well as Argentina’s then-central political decision-maker, Juan D. Peron.
The article presents the Slovenian poet Srečko Kosovel (1904 – 1926) in the context of his entire poetic oeuvre, from impressionism and expressionism to constructivism, in a complex understanding of ...time, space, and inter-literary contacts, with an emphasis on his individual poetic expression. In the analytical part of the article, we focus on the reception of translated Kosovel’s poetry in the Czech and Slovak cultural space during the 20th and 21st centuries. Through an annotated bibliographical survey of published works, we identify three phases of the reception of his poetry in Slovenia, which are also reflected in three stages of translations into Czech and Slovak language: the first one is connected to two anthologies of Slovenian poetry published during the Second World War (1940), the second one is linked to two selections of his poetry that came out in response to the new reception and perception of Kosovel in the 1970s, and the third stage concerns translations published after 2000. We analyse the reception of the poet in translation by both looking into particulars of the selection of poems and composition of individual poetry collections and close reading of selected translations and observing translation strategies of individual translators. In doing so, we draw on analyses of poems that exist in several translated versions or in translations by different translators.
