V prispevku je prikazan razvoj ontološkega izrazja v slovenskem jeziku od začetkov pa vse do konca 19. stoletja. Analiziran je izvor osrednjih ontoloških izrazov: podstat, bitje, bistvo, bitnost, ...bit. Izkaže se, da je bilo obdobje katoliške obnove posebej cvetoče glede nastajanja te terminologije, čeprav so bili osnovni izrazi stan, bitje) postavljeni že v protestantskem obdobju. Poleg tega se v tej genezi izkaže kot pomemben zlasti slovarski prispevek Valentina Vodnika in Mateja Cigaleta.
On the basis of direct and indirect evidence, three main types of musical repertoire in the early-seventeenth-century Slovenian lands can be established that directly relate to the ...Counter-Reformation: plainchant, sacred song in the vernacular, and contemporary polyphonic music. The textual emphasis of the preserved musical pieces above all helped to shape a distinctly Counter-Reformation religious identity: contemporary polyphonic compositions, above all Litanies and Marian antiphons, with the emphasis of the dogma of sanctoral intercession; the acclamations Christus vincit with the stating of the pope Clemens VIII’s religious integrity; and responsory Sedil ie k’misi with accentuation of the transubstantiation. Although the vernacular songs heard in Corpus Christi processions are lost to us, they were probably characteristic of the Catholic soundscape and also must have attracted the attention of the listeners and confronted them with the confessional challenge directly. With the campaign of reform and propaganda, promoted principally by the bishop Hren, the successful progress of Catholic reform in the Slovenian lands at the beginning of the seventeenth century stabilised the situation in many musical institutions.
The article focuses on the relationship with alterity and the distant worlds that arises from the folksong cycle of the typ Kralj Matjaž rešen iz ječe ‘King Matthias rescued form the jale’, which is ...documented in the Slovenian folk tradition with reach materials from the Resia valley (Italy). Resia is a very peripheral western Slovenian linguistic minority area. Through the analysis of the texts from a linguistic and symbolic perspective the author trys to understand if the image of the Other, in this case of the Turk, is corresponding to the stereotyped representations which developped in folklore of Western Europe and in the South Slavic cultural space towards Ottoman/muslim world. An interesting parallel represents the cycle Zvijačna ugrabitev mlade matere (Lepa Vida) ‘Cunning kidnapping of a young mother (Fair Vida)’, where the Other is represented by a sailor/boatman (Saracen).
The article deals with the position held by the Slovenian magazine Kaplje Drops in the Slovenian collective memory. Published in the town of Idrija between 1966 and 1972, i.e. in the period of party ...liberalism in former Yugoslavia, Kaplje was a publication from the periphery that ‘swam against the current’, although its role was almost entirely ignored. The article’s aim is therefore to determine how the magazine’s contributors represented and (re)produced Slovenian identity and its constitutive elements, and which forms and strategies of national(istic) discourse were used. The methodology is based on a critical discursive analysis of selected articles that touch on the above-mentioned themes from all 26 issues of the magazine, including a special issue released upon the twentieth anniversary of the date the magazine voluntarily came to an end.
This paper will examine how a text rhizome replaced the traditionally understood physicality of the book in the contemporary drama and theatre of two prominent Slovene theatre and drama ...(post)dramatists, Dusan Jovanovic and Matjaz Zupancic. Both have demonstrated with their plays that the Slovene writing for the theatre was also headed for the waters disturbed by both the postdramatic turn and the performative turn. They bear witness to the fact that after these two turns, theatre texts tend to be in perpetual motion, in the process of semiosis. Therefore, nowadays the text in the theatre represents one of the elements in the weaving of various intertexts into a rhizome-like structure within the semiosphere of literature, theatre, and culture. The work of Jovanovic and Zupancic thus played a significant role in the deconstruction of the so-called literary or drama theatre and in the manifestation of the performative turn. Služba državne varnosti oz. pred letom 1967 Uprava državne varnosti, slovenska tajna politična policija, je nad slovensko emigracijo, še zlasti politično, izvajala konstanten nadzor. Slovenska tajna ...politična policija je ocenjevala, da so bili politični emigranti razdeljeni na več heterogenih skupin, ki naj bi si med seboj močno nasprotovale; družilo naj bi jih splošno sovraštvo proti Socialistični federativni republiki Jugoslaviji. Avtorji v pričujočem prispevku na podlagi povečini še neobjavljenega arhivskega gradiva, ki ga hrani Arhiv Republike Slovenije, skozi oči slovenske politične policije v šestdesetih letih predstavijo za jugoslovansko oblast „sovražne" organizacije slovenske politične emigracije, pojasnijo metode in način spremljanja njihove dejavnosti, ki so bile izražene zlasti skozi Jugoslaviji „sovražen" propagandni tisk.
Slovenian emigration is often presented with a general overview in which general data and statistical facts prevail, while the individual experiences and memories of Slovenian emigrants are omitted ...from these descriptions. In the study, which was conducted using a biographical-narrative methodological approach among members of the Slovenian diaspora from the United States of America, Canada and Australia, we were interested in the personal experiences and memories of those who emigrated from Slovenia themselves, or whose ancestors did. Through those life stories and memories, we can illustrate Slovenian emigration processes in such a way that people would better understand global migration processes. In the article we present three real life stories of members of the Slovenian diaspora, their individual memories and perceptions of their place of origin, homeland, the memories of emigration and immigration processes and memories of integration to the new social environments.
The epigraph in poet Jean Valentine's book Break the Glass: "A pencil/for a wing bone " (by Lorine Neidecker) leads us to consider the way writing allows for transcendence. Similarly, in her work, ...Meta Kušar brushes out stars with a comb and then finds "an accomplice / combed/ in this hollowed-out place..." From the two countries US and Slovenia of such vastly different sizes, these poets, both influenced by such luminaries as Emily Dickinson and Marina Tsvetaeva, have carved out intimate spiritually enriching spaces where consciousness meets the sublime. Focusing on Kušar's view of Heraclitus as a teacher who "understood invisible strings are stronger than visible ones, " I will explore the thematic, literary and stylistic connections between these two literary stars, as well as some of their differences in how they cultivate a poetics of the invisible that illuminates the mysterious underworld of the human soul as it negotiates the political, philosophical and ethical realms of contemporary existence.
This paper draws on the poetic concept of the oneness of the self and the world, as elaborated through Coleridge's reading of German romantic philosophers by the poet William Wordsworth. In hispoem ..."Prelude"he rejects simple materialism and simple spiritualism, just as Schelling rejected the extreme views that the spiritual self creates the world or that the material world is created by the self. Wordsworth claims that things are half created and halfperceived, and that there are ennobling interchanges between the world and the self. The notion of oneness, of the merging of inner and outer, perceived and theperceiver, has been influential on numerous and diverse poets. In the paper, I compare various modes of vision that attempt to reveal this oneness in Slovenian poets such as Prešeren, Kosovel, Detela and Osojnik on the one hand, and Wright, Oliver, Murray, Stevens and Strand among American writers. The question of influence is at least ambiguous, but what I am suggesting is some likenesses that seem to emerge from the act searching the world through writing.
This text discusses the formation of Slovenian local elites in Trieste in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A significant part of the analysis presented here concerns the habitus of ...the elite and the attitudes expressed through the significance they attached to being members of the elite. Drawing on the discourses presented in the Slovenian and Croatian press published in Trieste, as well as biographical sources, this article outlines the vision of society held by the political leaders of the local community. It emphasises how the elites gave expression to their habitus in the public sphere through a variety of institutional activities. I argue that the life of the Slovenian politician and social activist Ivan Nabergoj, a figure central to this text, constitutes an ideal-type committed biography. In conclusion, I address the relationship between the elites and the surrounding community, arguing that elites were representatives of the community while also determining the forms of group belonging by their shaping of mechanisms of consolidation. In this article, I also consider the particularities of the political conditions of Slovenians living in the Slavic-Italian borderlands.
