This book provides an overview of ninety key concepts which often trouble those who are new to researching within the social sciences. It covers theories of knowledge, methodologies and methods. Each ...entry offers a definition of a concept, shows how researchers have used that concept in their research and discusses difficulties that the concept presents. The book supports those undertaking their own social research projects by providing detailed critical commentary on key concepts in a particularly accessible way.
In exploring these concepts, a wide range of research reports across many different fields are described. These include not only classic accounts, but also a broad selection of recent studies, some written by new researchers. The book will be useful for higher-education students carrying out projects within social science faculties at the end of their first degree or during a master’s programme, though it will also be particularly helpful for those undertaking doctoral research, and some entries have been written with the production of a thesis in mind.

We are in a crisis of touch, prompting a need to reconsider and revalue our tactile behavior and the reciprocity of touching (Kearney, 2021). This crisis provided a starting point for Thresholds of ...Touch, the performance experiment that underpins this video article. Thresholds was devised through a two- year interdisciplinary collaboration between the authors – an artist/researcher, social researcher, and sound composer/researcher. The performance experiment was scripted and choreographed to care- fully explore the reciprocity of physical touching with others, the self, the environment, and objects as a ‘tactile preparation chamber’ to sensitize and activate people to share and document their touch experiences. This video article uses artistic embodied strategies to engage with and reflect on the participants experiences of Thresholds. Through our layering, re-enactment and live-tracing of participants visual and written responses to Thresholds, and our spoken and written reflections we create an analytical dialogue with the performance. The video article proposes these methods as an invitation to the viewer to move and touch through this dialogue as a route to newly research and attune to touch.
How we feel about the duration of our conversations has rarely been studied. New research has asked people about the lengths of their conversations, and whether they end when they want them to.
Abstract
When in children’s lives do gaps by family socioeconomic status (SES) in cognitive skills emerge, how large are they before children enter school, and how do they develop over schooling? We ...study the evolution of achievement gaps by parental education from birth to adolescence in Germany. We exploit data from fifty-seven tests taken from the age of seven months to sixteen years by the National Educational Panel Study. Because Germany has one of the most stratified education systems in the Western World, we hypothesized that achievement gaps will grow particularly during tracked secondary schooling. However, our findings show that SES gaps emerge and expand long before children enter school and then remain stable throughout their school careers. Because gaps stop growing, we tentatively conclude that schooling decreases inequality in learning by family SES.
