Our intention in writing this work was to identify methods that were used in Russian landscaped garden design on the example of St. Petersburg estates and the Bogoroditsky palace and park ensemble ...created by A.T. Bolotov, and to reveal differences between Russian and English landscaped parks. The study suggests that the Russian park was very different from the English one. Whereas the English park would be created as a visual sequence (a system of park pictures) in which different panoramas were constructed from different perspectives, Russian park designers sought to create the space of the park as a pathway between individual scenes. English parks were living pictures, and Russian natural gardens were 3D spaces. As a conclusion, Russian parks had a decentralized composition and were structured as a system of scenes (glades with architectural or natural objects) and «dark alleys» (transit spaces) connecting them, and the immersive environment of the Russian garden implied the depth of the space.

Sixty-nine percent of the 1.5 million Eastern Europeans and Central Asians with HIV live in the Russian Federation. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is effective but cannot help those who leave ...treatment. Focus groups with patients who dropped out of ART for ≥12 months (lost-to-care, LTCs, n = 21) or continued for ≥12 months (engaged-in-care; EICs; n = 24) were conducted in St. Petersburg. Structural barriers included stigma/discrimination and problems with providers and accessing treatment. Individual barriers included employment and caring for dependents, inaccurate beliefs about ART (LTC only), side-effects, substance use (LTCs, present; EICs, past), and depression. Desire to live, social support, and spirituality were facilitators for both; EICs also identified positive thinking and experiences with ART and healthcare/professionals. Interventions to facilitate retention and adherence are discussed.

The paper explores the relationship among factors believed to influence the economic development potential of Russian cities in the post-Soviet period, based on a detailed case study of small and ...medium-sized urban places in Leningrad Oblast. Relying on rarely utilized statistical data (including local town censuses) collected during on-site research and interviews, the author constructs an economic development index that provides a reference for inter-urban comparisons and analysis. The significance of accessibility for post-Soviet urban development is statistically demonstrated and the role of inherited spatial economic structures (economic-geographical endowment) is discussed along with other factors influencing urban performance. Rimsky-Korsakov once had the opportunity of earning a visit from a certain young man, a rendezvous that resonated of extreme emissions of ego, quite long into the future. The compositions written by ...the latter were, according to Rimsky, nonsensical. He liberally expressed his opinion, but that did not deter the young man from bursting into his egotistical rhetoric, predicting his eventual ascension and Rimsky's resultant regret for his ‘rash’ comments, words which partially manifested, albeit not serving so much the cause conceived by the young man. This young man was Sergey Diaghilev. This chapter outlines the contentious space between the two individuals, and the dynamics therein. As it is, it concentrates a tad more on Diaghilev's character. Diaghilev was one of what psychologists called “borderline dwellers,” with a strong impulse to write. Despite his future clout in the St. Petersburg cultural scene, he remained an object of ridicule to the Rimsky circle, elements of which guarded their mentor from contact with Diaghilev.
